  • COMMON STATEMENT on the US-EU WINE TRADE RELATIONSHIP June 14, 2021
COMMON STATEMENT ON THE US-EU WINE TRADE RELATIONSHIP June 14, 2021 The EU and the US wine sectors play a critical role in supporting a vibrant transatlantic trade relationship. This sector is an essential driving force for many rural economies and for a significant number of medium and small enterprises. The undersigned deeply regret that the wine sector, as a notable industry in our two economies is sometimes caught in the crosshairs of unrelated trade disputes, causing economic damage to producers, and putting the millions of jobs that they support at risk. Consumers are also victims of those trading conflicts, which can lead to higher prices and reduced consumer choice. We urge the European Union and the US to resolve current trade disputes, to stop any related retaliatory action against wine exports, and to strengthen their bilateral partnership in order to avoid any sanctions against those sectors, including in the context of the current World Trade Organization Large Civil Aircraft Airbus-Boeing disputes. As legislators and policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic, we acknowledge the importance and benefits of strengthening this bilateral partnership. Both the U.S. and the EU are each other’s largest export markets, with the total wine trade reaching more than $5.3 billion (€4.5 billion) annually, creating jobs and investment and supporting sustainable agriculture on both sides of the Atlantic. We ask our governments to further support the economic vitality and diversity of our wine sectors by working to remove all tariffs on wine to achieve a “zero for zero” wine trade environment.

  • The Hunt for Red October. Russia-Sweden Relations and a Missing Submarine
The Hunt for Red October. Russia-Sweden Relations and a Missing Submarine By Israel Shamir Region: Europe, Russia and FSU Global Research, August 01, 2015 Theme: History These days, Sweden is all agog. In the midst of the coldest summer in living history that deprived the Swedes of their normal sun-accumulating July routine, the country plunged into an exciting search for a Russian submarine in the Stockholm archipelago, and (as opposed to the previous rounds of this venerable Swedish maritime saga) this time they actually found the beast. Now we know for certain the Russians had intruded into Swedish waters! The Swedish admirals and the Guardian journalists probably feel themselves vindicated, as they always said so. Does it matter that the U-boat was sunk one hundred years ago, in 1916? Surely it does not, for the Russians are the same Russians and the sea is the same sea! I would continue in the same vein and have a lot of fun, but many innocent readers (especially on the internet) are not attuned for irony. If they read Swift’sModest Proposal, they’d call the police. For the benefit of the reader in whom is no guile (John 1:47), I’ll say it in plain words: the Swedish Navy and the great British newspaper Guardian made fools of themselves again, as they blamed the Russian president Putin for sending a submarine that turned out to be a one hundred year old war relic. | 1 The U-boat calledSom (Catfish) had been built in the US in 1901 for the Russian Navy, served in World War I and went down with all hands in 1916.

  • CDC) Dataset Codebook
The Categorically Disaggregated Conflict (CDC) Dataset Codebook (Version 1.0, 2015.07) (Presented in Bartusevičius, Henrikas (2015) Introducing the Categorically Disaggregated Conflict (CDC) dataset. Forthcoming in Conflict Management and Peace Science) The Categorically Disaggregated Conflict (CDC) Dataset provides a categorization of 331 intrastate armed conflicts recorded between 1946 and 2010 into four categories: 1. Ethnic governmental; 2. Ethnic territorial; 3. Non-ethnic governmental; 4. Non-ethnic territorial. The dataset uses the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset v.4-2011, 1946 – 2010 (Themnér & Wallensteen, 2011; also Gleditsch et al., 2002) as a base (and thus is an extension of the UCDP/PRIO dataset). Therefore, the dataset employs the UCDP/PRIO’s operational definition of an aggregate armed conflict: a contested incompatibility that concerns government and/or territory where the use of armed force between two parties, of which at least one is the government of a state, results in at least 25 battle-related deaths (Themnér, 2011: 1). The dataset contains only internal and internationalized internal armed conflicts listed in the UCDP/PRIO dataset. Internal armed conflict ‘occurs between the government of a state and one or more internal opposition group(s) without intervention from other states’ (ibid.: 9). Internationalized internal armed conflict ‘occurs between the government of a state and one or more internal opposition group(s) with intervention from other states (secondary parties) on one or both sides’(ibid.). For full definitions and further details please consult the 1 codebook of the UCDP/PRIO dataset (ibid.) and the website of the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University: http://www.pcr.uu.se/research/ucdp/definitions/.

  • Submarine Intrusions in Swedish Waters During the 1980S by Bengt Gustafsson
Parallel History Project on Cooperative Security (PHP) January 2011 E-Dossier, Submarine Intrusions in Swedish Waters During the 1980s www.php.isn.ethz.ch By Bengt Gustafsson Submarine Intrusions in Swedish Waters During the 1980s By Bengt Gustafsson The Truth is in the Eye of the Beholder Conspiracy theories, alternative explanations, and urban legends frequently play important roles in shaping public perceptions of high-profile events in history. Such alternative views are sometimes based on ideological preconceptions, the failure to appreciate the complexity of issues, or specific preconceptions about individuals, occupations, or institutions. In Sweden, the reception of what is known as ‘the submarine issue’ is a prominent example of such dynamics. The Swedish armed forces assert that from the middle of the 1970s until autumn 1992, foreign submarines repeatedly conducted intrusions far into Swedish territorial waters, including in the direction of the country’s naval bases. There was only one occasion on which the nation responsible for the incursion was successfully identified – when a Soviet Whiskey class submarine was discovered to have run aground in a bay just east of Karlskrona Naval Base in southern Sweden and was found on the morning of 28 October 1981. Journalists covered the event under headlines such as ‘Whiskey on the Rocks’. In Sweden, this event is known as the ‘U-137-incidenten’ *‘U-137 Incident’+ after the temporary designation given to submarine S-363 by the Soviet Union for the operation. In September of the previous year, the last Swedish destroyer in service, HMS Halland, had been deployed against a pair of submarines that were discovered in the outer Stockholm archipelago.

  • The Shining Path of Peru: Defeated Or Alive?
THE SHINING PATH OF PERU: DEFEATED OR ALIVE? A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the The School of Continuing Studies and of The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Liberal Studies By Edgar Malone, B.A. Georgetown University Washington, DC November 19, 2010 THE SHINING PATH OF PERU: DEFEATED OR ALIVE? Edgar Malone, B.A. Thesis Advisor: Prof. Nicholas Palarino, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This study concerns the Shining Path of Peru and its relationship with the emergent democratic government during the presidencies of Belaunde, Garcia and Fujimori. This thesis was to collected pertinent evidence that can help the reader to understand the rise and fall of the Shining Path in Peru, providing the proper facts that support its defeat by the Fujimori presidency. The methodology used in this work relied on a comprehensive account of historical information of the economic, political and social situation in Peru during 1980s-1990s trying to explain how the Shining Path evolved from a regional organization to a highly organized insurgent group bringing Peru‟s government to the brink of terror and generalized fear. Additionally, the study is based in the analyses of Fujimori‟s new policies dealing with terrorism and his controversial self- coup of 1992 leading with the capture of Shining Path‟s leader Abimael Guzman. Fujimori‟s new approaches for old problems policies successfully defeated the serious terrorist threat that the Shining Path represented for the Peruvian government proving that the Shining Path no longer represents a security concern for the Peruvian government.
