Passengers to Get Faster Journeys Between Somerset and Dorset Following Bridge Renewal at Yetminster
Passengers to get faster journeys between Somerset and Dorset following bridge renewal at Yetminster January 17, 2020 Network Rail is to carry out upgrades between Castle Cary and Weymouth over a series of weekends this spring to provide passengers with a more reliable railway and faster journeys. Between January and April, engineers will strengthen tunnels, bridges and refurbish and renew track on the Heart of Wessex line, which links Weymouth and Bristol. The main area of work is at Yetminster in Dorset where a 129-year-old bridge crossing the River Wriggle will be renewed. This requires the closure of the line for six days between Yeovil Pen Mill and Weymouth from Saturday 15 February to Friday 21 February when buses will replace trains. Replacement transport will run between Weymouth and Yeovil Pen Mill to connect with Great Western Railway (GWR) train services towards Bristol Temple Meads. Engineers will work around the clock to replace the deck of Yetminster river bridge, providing a new, a more reliable support for track. There will also be further closures over four weekends to complete the other upgrades to the line. With the new bridge deck installed, a long-standing speed restriction will be removed to provide passengers with faster journeys between Somerset and Dorset, whilst reducing maintenance requirements in the future. Mark Killick, Network Rail Wessex route director, said: “There is never a good time to close an important line for the area’s communities, and we are sorry for the inconvenience the closures will cause. “This significant piece of work to the bridge will be much easier to maintain and together with a reinforced tunnel and new and refurbished track, there will be a much more reliable railway and better journeys for our passengers.” James Wilcox, GWR’s Station Manager for Castle Cary, said: “This package of works will improve reliability on the route for years to come, and once complete and the speed restriction lifted, this will allow us the opportunity to improve journeys times. -

COVID-19 Due to the impact of COVID-19 and school closures in the first half of 2020, the school aged immunisation provider will be offering catch-up doses of Meningitis ACWY, Td/IPV and HPV during the 2020/21 academic year to those cohorts that missed their scheduled doses in the 2019/20 academic year – see below for further details. 1 July 2020 Dear Parents/Carers Transfer of SAT schools to SAST on 1 July 2020 During this academic year, we have been working very closely with the trustees, headteachers and chairs of the school governing bodies of the Southern Academy Trust on its future and the proposal that their schools join SAST. The Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education and the Regional Schools’ Commissioner have supported this. More recently, we have completed all the formal consultation processes with staff. I am delighted to confirm that the Department of Education has now confirmed the transfer of the Southern Academy Trust to the Sherborne Area Schools’ Trust on 1 July 2020. Shaftesbury School (including its state boarding school), Shaftesbury CE Primary School, Motcombe CE Primary School and St Andrew’s CE Primary School in Fontmell Magna, have joined our multi-academy trust with whom they already have a close working relationship. The Southern Academy Trust organisation will be dissolved as the schools have transferred to SAST. The schools will now be officially part of our trust of 17 schools serving North and West Dorset and South Somerset, including 4 secondary schools, 13 primary schools and 3 nursery settings, providing education from 0-19 years old. Coming together provides an exciting opportunity to create a stronger and more sustainable local trust, which will enable us to provide excellent education to all students. There are already shared values with a history of partnership working, which we want to preserve and enhance. SAST strongly believes in partnership and collaboration, the pursuit of excellence, promoting holistic lifelong learning and recognising equality and distinctiveness. -

Somerset Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment 2018-21 Somerset Health and Wellbeing Board ANNEXE 6 SOUTH SOMERSET COMMISSIONING LOCALITY 1 6.1 South Somerset 6.1.1 Overview The South Somerset commissioning locality is in south east of the county. It is the largest commissioning locality by population. The area is made up of market towns and countryside, with Yeovil by far the largest settlement. Health need is taken from the South Somerset Commissioning Locality Profile for 2016 http://www.somersetintelligence.org.uk/files/South%20Somerset%20Cloc%20 2016.pdf which should be considered part of the Somerset PNA 2018. 6.1.2 Population & context for health The population registered with GPs in the locality was 122,383 in 2016. The area has a similar population age profile to the Somerset average. The Index of Multiple Deprivation for the local area is 16.9 representing lower levels of deprivation compared to the Somerset average of 18.1. Disease prevalence Significantly worse (higher number than expected compared to the county average) for: o Dementia Significantly better (lower number than expected compared to the county average) for: o Chronic Kidney Disease (18+) o Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease o Mental Health o Stroke Mortality The ‘death blobs’ for mortality and years of life lost provide a visual indication of the key causes of death South Somerset Commissioning Locality. Joint Local Plan Review for West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland INITIAL ISSUES AND OPTIONS CONSULTATION FEBRUARY 2017 West Dorset, Weymouth & Portland Local Plan Review Foreword We are delighted to introduce the review of the West Dorset, Weymouth & Portland joint Local Plan. Although it is only a short time ago since the examination and adoption of the joint Local Plan, the inspector who examined the plan said that the councils should prepare an early review. This review needs to identify additional land capable of meeting housing needs to the end of the current plan period (2031) as well as the broad locations for development in the five year period thereafter (to 2036). The inspector pointed towards Dorchester and Sherborne as locations for future growth, but we have also considered a range of options in our coastal and market towns. Government planning policy has changed on a number of issues including the introduction of ‘starter homes’ and ‘self build and custom housebuilding’ aimed to fulfil the Government’s priority to build more homes. We are therefore addressing these issues too. This first consultation document presents the issues relevant to the plan area today and seeks your thoughts on the different options that we can take. It is important to remember that these are ‘options’ which will be refined at a later stage - there is no commitment to any one solution at this point. The review of the adopted local plan is just starting and we are keen to seek as many different views as possible before we go any further. Your views are really important to us and the feedback we receive will guide decisions as the plan progresses towards examination and adoption.
