Resources USAIDIUWASH The USAID Urban Water,

Sanitation and Hygiene Penyehatan USAIDIUWASH Lingkungan untuk Semua (IUWASH PLUS) project is designed to assist the Government of Indonesia in increasing access to water supply and sanitation services as well as improving key hygiene behaviors among urban poor and vulnerable populations. USAID IUWASH PLUS works with governmental and donor agencies, the private sector, NGOs, communities and others to achieve the following "high level" results: • An increase access to improved water supply service for one million people in urban areas of which at least 500,000 are from the poorest 40% of the population (also referred to as the “bottom 40%” or “B40”); and • An increase access to safely managed sanitation for 500,000 people in urban areas. USAID IUWASH PLUS works with 32 Local Governments across Indonesia located in 8 provinces that include North , West , , , South , , and , and 2 special areas in DKI and Tangerang district. Infiltration Ponds Role of Community-Based Organizations and Local An innovative intervention that has been developed under Communities previous USAID IUWASH is the development and USAID IUWASH PLUS encourages the involvement of installment of infiltration ponds. Based on successful result Community-Based Organizations (KSM) or communities achieved by previous USAID Environmental Services around the infiltration pond sites, starting from Program (ESP), this moderate technology is very promising development process to monitoring and maintenance as the long-term conservation efforts. Through the involvement of to restore water resources. This intervention has been KSM and the appropriate conservation, the community will applied by ESP when worked with local water utilities and enjoy the benefits - the water discharges for the wells and community groups in Batu Karut and Cikareo, Cibogo the water spring are recovered. village in . In Cikareo, ESP and community groups developed 20 ponds (each with a capacity of 8 m3) to collect rainwater in order to restore the declining discharge of Cikareo spring. To overcome this situation, the communities have developed 31 infiltration ponds. This effort has gained significant success. The Cikareo spring discharge has increased from 48 to 110 liter per second. As consequence, this condition has restored the water resources that very important to support the livelihood of surrounding communities. Science and Technology behind Infiltration Ponds A development of infiltration pond is one of the easiest methods to improve groundwater sources in artificial way. Infiltration ponds can collect rainwater (which usually flows as water runoff upstream) in several small ponds so that water can seep into the aquifer layer, the layer of soil that can hold water.

The accumulated water in the aquifer layer can be utilized during the dry season to fill shallow ponds or to increase discharge of springs and meet the water requirement of people living in downstream areas as well. For climate change mitigation and adaptation, infiltration ponds also represent one solution that is simple yet potentially very powerful, and easy to replicate. During the course of the previous USAID IUWASH program, 3,770 infiltration ponds were constructed in partnerships with Municipal Drinking Water Company (PDAM), Coca Cola Foundation Indonesia(CCFI) and Nestle in11 cities/districts in , , East Java, Central Java and provinces. Four local NGOs in 3 provinces were also involved to assist the CCFI in implementing this program in 6 cities/districts among those provinces. In addition, USAID IUWASH also supported the capacity building of LSM Serikat Paguyuban Petani Qaryah Thayyibah (SPPQT) on the implementation of CCFI Water Replenishment program in Kaliangkrik catchment area, Magelang district. This program has constructed 860 infiltration ponds. Appreciating the completion of a total of 920 infiltration ponds constructed in the recharge area of Senjoyo and Ngablak springs in the effort to replenish about 600 million liters water per year for the people in Semarang district and Salatiga city, the Central Java Governor, Ganjar Pranowo stated that the province is committed to conserving water resources for the welfare of the people through better water supply and less local flooding. In 2017, USAID IUWASH PLUS with the Ternate city government, the CSR Partnership Working Team in Ternate city and PDAM and supported by Bank Indonesia Representative Office of North Maluku province, Regional Banking Consultative Board (BMPD), BPRS Bahari Berkesan, BPRS Bobato Lestari and BPBD Ternate has started to build 700 infiltration ponds to restore the discharge of raw water of Ake Gaale, in North Ternate sub-district, Ternate city. Other private parties, such as LANEIGE has also expressed their interest to be involved in the construction of the infiltration ponds.
