Distribution and Ecology of the Stoneflies (Plecoptera) of Flanders

Goethals Ghent University, Laboratory of Environmental Toxicology and Aquatic Ecology, J. Plateaustraat 22, 9000 Gent, Belgium. Based on a literature survey and the identifi cation of all available collection material from Flanders, a checklist is presented, distribution maps are plotted and the relationship between the occurrence of the different species and water characteristics is analysed. Of the sixteen stonefl y species that have been recorded, three are now extinct in Flanders (Isogenus nubecula, Taen- iopteryx nebulosa and T. schoenemundi), while the remaining species are rare. The occurrence of stonefl ies is almost restricted to small brooks, while observations in larger watercourses are almost lacking. Although a few records may indicate that some larger watercourses have recently been recolonised, these observations consisted of single specimens and might be due to drift. Most stonefl y population are strongly isolated and therefore extremely vulnerable. Small brooks in the Campine region (northeast Flanders), which are characterised by a lower pH and a lower conductivity, contained a different stonefl y community than the small brooks in the rest of Flanders. Leuctra pseudosignifera, Nemoura marginata and Protonemura intricata are mainly found in small brooks in the loamy region, Amphinemura standfussi, Isoperla grammatica, Leuctra fusca, L. hippopus, N. avicularis and P. meyeri mainly occur in small Campine brooks, while L. nigra, N. cinerea and Nemurella pictetii can be found in both types. Nemoura dubitans can typically be found in stagnant water fed with freatic water. -

We reconstructed the phylogenetic tree of this genus to account for evolutionary history when assessing the contribution of the ecological traits and to evaluate the role of the macroevolutionary trait (species’ age). The genus invaded the Nearctic twice independently from the Palearctic, yet this was not associated with the evolution of larger range sizes or dispersal capacity. -

The field has several surface manifestations and extended geological investigations, including tectonic and geomorphological studies have been carried out. This work presents the field application and interpretation of vertical electrical sounding (VES) data in both sides of the borders. The purpose was to study the structure down to the depth of 1000 m, in a relative large area, where information about the deep structure would have an extreme cost if acquired by a network of boreholes. Two main geoelectrical formations that coincide with the flysch and the limestone basement are revealed. The area appears faulted in the NW-SE and NE-SW directions and a few concealed graben and horst structures exist. Low resistivity values were observed above basement uplifts and major faults. It rep- resents one of the last intact large river systems in Europe, hosting many differ- ent types of ecosystems, from the narrow gorges in the upper part, to the wide, braided river sections in the middle part, to the near natural delta in the Adriatic Sea. These ecosystems include aquatic, semi-aquatic and semi-terrestrial habitats, and also include vital terrestrial foraging habitats near the river, in the still predom- inantly traditionally cultivated landscape. Imagines of Odonata act as ecosystem- connecting faunal elements – a fact which enhances their meaning as bioindicators. Very few studies for the area exist so far, but these few underscore the importance of the river valley as Albania’s biodiversity hotspot, providing ideal aquatic habi- tats for numerous species. Here, we will discuss the Odonata species based on the analysis of existing research data and on the results of our expeditions to the Vjosa habitats during 2015–2017. -

Struggles against dams and river diversions in Northwestern Greece (Sarajevo, 27-29/9/2018) Ioannis Papadimitriou Ioannina Ecological Organizations Net As one greek poet wrote “The rivers are the mailmen of the mountains”. So, in the beginning was Pindos mountain chain, which runs through continental Greece and shapes a climatic border between the more rainy western Greece and the rest of the country. Here are the springs of the longest greek rivers, flowing either to the east or to the west. 3 struggles against big dams or river diversions are the most interesting in the area, the first victorious in the past, the second continuing for many decades and the third necessary in the future. I shall describe in brief 2 of them, concerning Arachthos and Aoos rivers in Epirus Region and also Epirus Water Department (for Acheloos case, east of Pindos, there is another presentation). 1. Arachtos It originates in Pindos and flows to the south into Amvrakikos Golf. Since early 80’s there is the Pournari big dam in operation in its lower flow. The initial plans of the State Electrician Company was the transformation of Middle Arachthos in a system of successive hydroelectric dams. That’s why the water from Aoos springs dam was diverted to Arachthos after its use. The construction of the first planned, Agios Nikolaos dam, in the mountainous Tzoumerka area was announced in the mid-90’s, causing an 11 years struggle by local NGOs and societies, initially against the State Electrician Company and then against a private company. Finally the dam construction was cancelled by the Supreme Administrative Court (Decision 3858/2007 by Council of State). -
