2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expression Quadrennial Periodic Report 2016-2019 - United Arab Emirates General Information Describe the multi-stakeholder consultation process established for the preparation of this report, including consultations with relevant ministries, public institutions, local governments and civil society organizations Official letters were sent to 103 stakeholders including federal and local governments, private and public institutions and civil society organizations, inviting them to appoint a focal point within their organizations who can work with the UAE National Commission to prepare the UAE’s QPR for the period 2016-2019. One-on-one meetings were held with each stakeholder to discuss the objectives of the report and address any questions regarding the report. All stakeholders provided their input to the report in writing. In many cases, multiple follow up phone calls and meetings were held with stakeholders to further refine the responses. Further, the National Commission team conducted extensive desk research to find examples of good practices. The responses from stakeholders were studied, and together with the results of the desk research served to shape the report as seen below. The UAE National Commission has had to edit, paraphrase, summarize, and supplement some information submitted by partners to ensure a holistic narrative, accuracy, readability, and suitability for the purposes of this report. Furthermore, it must be noted that the information provided in the report is a reflection of the data available at the time of writing and that, in some cases, what is included in this report may be adapted, refocused or amended. -

The Ghosts of Horseshoe Bend Myth, Memory, and the Making of A
The Ghosts of Horseshoe Bend Myth, Memory, and the Making of a National Battlefield by Justin Scott Weiss A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts Approved April 2014 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Donald Fixico, Chair Jack Schermerhorn Nancy Dallett ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2014 ABSTRACT This research explores the various and often conflicting interpretations of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, an event seemingly lost in the public mind of twenty- first century America. The conflict, which pitted United States forces under the command of Major General Andrew Jackson against a militant offshoot of the Creek Confederacy, known as the Redsticks, ranks as the single most staggering loss of life in annals of American Indian warfare. Today, exactly 200 years after the conflict, the legacy of Horseshoe Bend stands as an obscure and often unheard of event. Drawing upon over two centuries of unpublished archival data, newspapers, and political propaganda this research argues that the dominate narrative of Northern history, the shadowy details of the War of 1812, and the erasure of shameful events from the legacy of westward expansion have all contributed to transform what once was a battle of epic proportions, described by Jackson himself as an “extermination,” into a seemingly forgotten affair. Ultimately, the Battle of Horseshoe Bend's elusiveness has allowed for the production of various historical myths and political messages, critiques and hyperboles, facts and theories. Hailed as a triumph during the War of 1812, and a high-water mark by the proponents of Manifest Destiny, Jackson's victory has also experienced its fair share of American derision and disregard. -

Ellefson 1 Philip Ellefson Senior thesis December 8, 2014 ‘Facing West’: Walt Whitman’s Evolving Attitudes Toward Manifest Destiny In “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry,” Walt Whitman makes a bold attempt to transcend time and space. He tells his readers that “It avails not, time nor place – distance avails not” (Leaves 1892, 120), and he is confident that his ferry ride home to Brooklyn will resonate with all his readers, even those generations in the future and in distant parts of the world. But despite the poem’s impressive language and grand scope, contemporary readers cannot help but think that Whitman falls just short of spatiotemporal transcendence. In 1883 (within Whitman’s lifetime) the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge forced his beloved ferry into obsolescence. He claims that “Just as you look on the numberless masts of ships and the thick-stemm’d pipes of steamboats, I look’d” (LG 1892, 121).
