ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS OF PEREGRINE PHILLIPS, VINEGAR MANUFACTURER, FROM ENGLAND TO KENTUCKY

By Paul K. Graham, AG, CG, CGL, and Cohen Swiney

Peregrine Phillips, a vinegar manufacturer from Bristol, England, in 1831 patented the contact process for producing concentrated sulfuric acid, a method still employed today. The inventor’s story first appeared in Nature in 1926, which relied heavily on historical records in England.1 Peregrine disap- peared from British records after 1831 and Nature was left with little to add: “in all probability this means . . . he left Bristol to seek his fortune else- where.”2 Until 2016, Peregrine’s now-updated Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entry concluded similarly: “after [1831] no records have been traced of Peregrine Phillips.”3 British historians had lost track of Peregrine, but descendants knew his fate. The Phillips family immigrated to the United States in 1831 and settled in northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. During the 1860s, Peregrine’s children moved to a community in Harrison County, Kentucky, about fifty miles south of Cincinnati. Numerous descendants still live in the region. Peregrine began keeping a family record with the birth of his first child, noting dates and places of events.4 Births, marriages, and deaths recorded through 1887 appear in Peregrine’s hand (some signed “P. Phillips”), and a female writer—likely one of his daughters—added later events. Peregrine

The current edition is updated to cover Peregrine’s immigration to and life in the United States. The record is in posses- sion of author Paul K. Graham, Salt Lake City, Utah, who purchased it, along with a family tree chart and portraits, via eBay in 2004. The seller had purchased the material at an estate sale and requested that the parties’ identities remain anonymous.

3 4 The Genealogist [Spring also added information about his siblings and earlier generations on the paternal Phillips lineage. Frances (Adams) Collins wrote a narrative account in 1974 of Phillips and his descendants, primarily drawing on the 1926 Nature column, Peregrine’s family record, and oral history.5 In 1998, Charles W. Feix privately published a broad but incomplete descendant genealogy.6 The Feix booklet included other sections containing historical material: abstracts of records (primarily obituaries), the 1974 Collins narrative, the 1926 Nature article, a U.S. patent issued to Peregrine Phillips in 1837, and a collection of family photographs. The present account fills in gaps in those earlier publications, documenting all of Peregrine’s children and grandchildren and expanding the evidentiary record of the Phillips family in the United States. It also outlines the family groups of Peregrine’s father and grandfather in Bristol, England, and Haver- fordwest, , which he recorded in the family record, and follows the Phillips lineage from its earliest-known origins.

The immigrant traced his paternal lineage to PeregrineE Phillips, a Welsh Puritan preacher born at Amroth, , in 1623, to EdwardF Phillips.7 In 1861, Thomas Rees published a thorough sketch of Peregrine’s life. “His (the preacher’s) father was the vicar of [Amroth], and is described as a good old Puritan, who suffered for not reading the ‘Book of Sports.’”8 The son’s studies at Oxford were cut short by the English Civil War, and he soon after became minister at the church at Llangwm, Pembrokeshire, along the River Cleddau. Phillips developed as a preacher, and Oliver Cromwell requested he preach for the army shortly before the Siege of Pembroke in 1648. By the time the Clarendon Code took effect in the 1660s, Phillips was well known across the region. He refused to comply with the 1662 Act of Uniformity and was ejected as preacher at Llangwm. 1665 forced Phillips out of the town, and he settled on a farm at Dredgeman Hill owned by Sir Herbert Perrott, just beyond the legally prescribed distance of his former church. A later lease for the land still survives (1682).9 The minister set up a church in his home at Dredgeman Hill, for which he was “repeatedly fined and imprisoned” for a period of more than twenty years.10 The persecution ended with the 1687 Declaration of Indulgence, and Phillips arranged for his congregation to meet in Haverfordwest town. The Toleration Act in 1689 allowed the congregation to build a meeting house in the town. Phillips died 17 September 1691, at age sixty-eight.11 Peregrine’s son ConstantineD struggled to make a consistent living at Dredgeman Hill. Signing as “Constant Phillips,” he wrote to his landlord Hester Perrott in 1706 that “I have met with nothing here these many years but losses, crosses, and dreadful disappointments,” and threatened to leave.12 He would die on 27 July 1739.13 Constantine’s only documented son, PeregrineC, was baptized on 6 January 1691 and died in March 1781.14 Baptisms of Peregrine’s children and grand- children are found in records of the St. Thomas Green Meeting in Haver- fordwest.

4 PEREGRINE1 PHILLIPS (PeregrineA-B-C, ConstantineD, PeregrineE, EdwardF), son of Peregrine and Elizabeth (Cox) Phillips, born at Philadelphia Street, Bristol, England, on 30 January 1800,79 died 6 March 1888 at residence of his daughter, Mary (Phillips) Jones, near Oddville, Harrison County, Kentucky, at age 88.80 He married at St. Mary’s Islington, England, 18 November 1826 SUSANNAH CHAPMAN,81 born in England on 24 September 1806, baptized at St. James, Clerkenwell, London, 16 November 1806, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Chapman of Strachan Terrace, Islington,82 died in Kentucky on 9 February 1850 at age 43.83 Peregrine took a strong interest in his father’s vinegar manufacturing work and became an astute chemist. He developed “certain improvements in manu- facturing [concentrated] sulphuric acid,” which involved a catalytic contact process using platinum. Low demand for sulfuric acid in the 1830s meant little recognition or income from the invention, but industrial production expanded dramatically in the late nineteenth century and others refined Peregrine’s original process. A patent was issued to him on 21 March 1831.84 The vinegar manufacturing partnership in Bristol dissolved shortly after, and Peregrine left England with his family on the Cosmo, arriving in New York City on 6 September 1831.85 The Phillips family initially settled on Threemile Creek in Campbell County, Kentucky, three miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio. Peregrine paid tax on forty-eight acres of land there starting in 1833, though he did not receive a deed for the land until 1838.86 He stopped paying tax on the property after

1839, and made a deed of sale in 1846.87 The reason for a discrepancy in timing between deeds and tax lists is unclear. Peregrine was not done inventing, and on 17 April 1837 he received a patent from the United States.88 He had developed an improvement on the process for manufacturing white lead, a key ingredient in white paint. The process he developed was only one way of producing the substance and was not groundbreaking like his sulfuric acid process. With a patent in hand, Phillips opened a white lead manufacturing company in Cincinnati.89 His home and business were located at the corner of Plum and Columbia, two blocks from the Ohio River. (Paul Brown Stadium now stands on the location, and nothing remains of the old neighborhood.) Peregrine returned to Campbell County and farming in the 1840s.90 Following the Civil War, he retired to Harrison County with his children, where he lived with his son Alfred.91 Peregrine Phillips died on 6 March 1888 at the home of his daughter Mary (Phillips) Jones, and the short death notice mentioned his birth in Bristol, England.92

After her marriage, Susannah settled in with John at his house in Campbell Co.105 They moved to Harrison Co. in the early 1870s, where he purchased one and a half acres of land on Beaver Creek in June 1874.106 John was twenty-five years Susannah’s senior, and died only eight years into their marriage.107 He wrote a will on 18 Aug. 1875, just under a month before his death, leaving almost the entirety of his estate to his wife (called “Susan” in the will).108 After her death, the property would go to John’s niece Mary J. Allen in Cincinnati. Six of his children by Lucy Young each received one dollar. Four months after John’s death, Susannah married Lewis D. Terry.109 He and his four children lived on his 150-acre farm on Twin Creek, ten miles west of Cynthiana.110 Susannah joined the nearby White Oak Methodist Church.111 In the winter of 1890–1891, Susannah and Lewis moved into a house in Cynthiana, where they lived for the remainder of their lives.112 Lewis, an “esteemed citizen age 88,” died in May 1900 after an extended illness.113 His will—written 14 March 1892—was probated 25 June 1900.114 He left all his property to his wife, which after his death was to be divided among his children (not named). Remembered as “a woman of many fine traits of character,” Susan died at her home on 20 Jan. 1918 after struggling with pneumonia for three weeks.115 Her will, written on 3 April 1913, did not convey property, but released all

After her marriage, she and James lived primarily in Cincinnati,126 though their son was born in Butler County, Ohio, in 1851.127

During the decade prior to the Civil War, James worked as a painter.128 They lived in the Prospect Hill neighborhood and were still there in 1860.129 On the eve of the Civil War, James and Elizabeth moved Harrison County, Kentucky, where he purchased land 22 February 1861, situated on the Cyn- thiana and Claysville Pike near Oddville.130 James turned to farming in the late 1860s, and he and Elizabeth purchased a 120-acre farm on 29 May 1869, situated on the waters of Beaver and Sycamore creeks.131 In 1872, James “entered into merchandising,” but ended that endeavor in 1878 to return to farming.132 That change coincided with a property transfer. James was the grantee on the deed for the family’s farm in 1869, but on 1 April 1878, he transferred the property to Elizabeth. According to the deed, “her means were used in paying the purchase price for the land” back in 1869;133 the transaction shows Elizabeth’s central role in the family’s finances. Elizabeth also owned a lot in the Walnut Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati, which she gave to her son in 1885 in exchange for some of his land on the Cynthiana and Claysville Pike in Harrison County.134 James wrote his will on 1 January 1896.135 After that date, Elizabeth pur- chased three tracts of land in her own right. The first came on 24 January 1896, when she bought 62½ acres of land.136 The next was in 1901, when she added 40 acres on the Oddville and Stoney Point Turnpike Road.137 Lastly, she purchased another two-and-a-half acres of land in 1906.138 James died about 10 o’clock p.m. on 25 August 1909, a “prominent and highly esteemed” member of the community.139 He had cast his first vote for James K. Polk for President in 1844.140 He was an Odd Fellow and a Mason (St. Andrews Lodge), and “was [known as] a genial, good-natured, peace- loving, moral, law abiding man. He was industrious and had scant patience with or use for triflers and idlers. He was fond of reading.”

James’s will was probated 27 September 1909, one month after his death.141 In it, he set up a scholarship fund for young women in the com- munity, with applicants drawn from the Episcopal, Christian (Reformed), and Presbyterian churches. The fund’s endowment would come from the proceeds of his real estate, which would be sold after Elizabeth’s death. Neither his wife nor son were interested in the scholarship idea, because Elizabeth renounced the provisions made for her in James’s will (electing instead to take her legal share of the estate),142 and James P. Hodson contested his father’s will.143 These actions served to end the idea of a scholarship fund.144 Elizabeth died on Sunday, 5 September 1915, and the funeral was held at her residence near Oddville the following Tuesday.145 “Aunt Betsey,” as she was called, was remembered as “a woman of much energy and business acumen” and was a long-time member of the Methodist church. Her will, dated 27 January 1910, was probated on 24 January 1916.146 The simple instructions directed all her property to her son James P. Hodson.

Zion Cemetery, Oddville, Harrison County,161 daughter of John O. Beaseman.162 As a young man, Peregrine worked in the grocery business in Cincinnati. “There he was a member of the old volunteer fire department, a Captain of the Rover Cadets, a local military company, and a little later was First Lieutenant of the Rover Guards of State Militia.”163 He moved to Harrison County by 1860, where he manufactured ketchup for a short period of time.164 On 21 September 1860, Peregrine bought 58⅛ acres of land in Harrison County on the waters of Sycamore Creek.165 In a curious transaction, Peregrine and Lucy gifted the land to her brother William T. Beaseman on 19 January 1861,166 and William sold the land back to them two days later.167 The purpose of the gift and return of the property is not explained in the documents.

Peregrine served in the Confederate army during the Civil War, enlisting in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, on 20 October 1861.168 He left the service on 20 November 1862 in Abington, Virginia.169 Near the end of his life, he received a pension from the state of Kentucky for his military service, which was awarded on 30 July 1912.170 Peregrine’s obituary makes a conflicting claim about the length of his Civil War service, stating that he “served four years.”171 Peregrine served as a justice of the peace for a short while after the war, and his duties included acting as coroner for inquests. In one case, a man’s body was found in a pile of corn fodder in a log house on a farmer’s property.172 A jury was called, including Peregrine’s brother Alfred, to deter- mine the cause of death. The man was ultimately identified as Frank Hiltenbrand, who was about fifty years old, and his wife was notified. The jury came to the conclusion that Hiltenbrand died from natural causes. Peregrine and Lucy sold their 58-acre farm on 21 August 1876 to his sister Mary.173 The couple did not own a farm after that, living on small properties of one acre of less.174 After Lucy’s death, Peregrine moved in with his daugh- ter Fannie and son-in-law Brack.175 Peregrine was sick and bedridden the two weeks leading up to his death.176 He passed away on Tuesday afternoon, 31 March 1914, at Fannie and Brack Ross’s house. He was remembered as a “member of a prominent family” who had been a member of the Red Men and Masonic orders. His funeral was conducted from Mt. Zion Methodist Church.177

1834,194 He died 31 January 1917 in his home in Cynthiana at age 82.195 He married at J. M. Hodson’s house, Hamilton County, Ohio, on 19 October 1858 KATHERINE A. HAUFFMAN, daughter of John Jacob Hauffman and Barbara (both from Bavaria),196 born in Ohio on 11 January 1839,197 died at the residence of Mrs. J. T. Argo, Cynthiana, on 30 November 1922 at age 83, buried in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana, on 2 December 1922.198 Katherine’s death certificate states that she was born 17 January 1839, but the Phillips family record and her obituary give the 11 January date. Alfred grew up in Campbell County, Kentucky. No known record explains Alfred’s activities during the Civil War, but he was not in a federal military unit. After the war, Alfred joined the bulk of the Phillips family when they moved to Harrison County. He purchased seventy-seven acres of land there in January 1869.199 Two weeks later, Alfred and his brother George jointly purchased sixty acres on the waters of Sycamore Creek.200 These transactions represented the beginning of more than four decades owning and farming land in that part of Harrison County. In February 1913, as he was retiring, Alfred bought a house in Cynthiana located across from the hospital,201 and he expanded the property by purchasing an adjoining lot from his son Richard in 1915.202 This was the house where he lived out his final years. In February 1916, eleven months prior to his death, Alfred sold the farmland he had first purchased in 1869.203 Alfred died 31 January 1917. “He was one of the county’s good, straight- forward citizens, whom everybody liked and respected.”204 In his will, written 9 May 1914, he left all his property to Katherine during her life, and any remainder would be divided among his sons at her death.205

Katherine died in the evening of 30 November 1922. “Mrs. Phillips was a woman of many virtues, of warm and sympathetic heart and generous dispo- sition. She was always thinking of others. During her life she had reared five orphaned children.”206 She was a member of the Catholic Church. Katherine’s estate was assigned to the Harrison County public adminis- trator.207 Although she owned no property, she did hold a note for $1,500 against her son Alfred. In court, Alfred claimed the debt was “erroneous and was executed solely for pacifying his mother who was an aged woman.” His brother Peregrine agreed that it was not a just debt.208

Harrison County, on 1 January 1917, daughter of Joshua Head and Charlotte Deming.251 Robert lived in Cincinnati with his sister Elizabeth and her husband just prior to the start of the Civil War.252 Despite being twenty-two at the outset of the war, no record has been found showing military service or a civilian activity during that period. After the war, he worked as a teamster in Newport, Campbell County.253 Robert moved to live with his brothers Alfred and George in Harrison County on Sycamore Creek prior to 1880.254 On 3 January 1899, Robert and Elizabeth gifted three small tracts of land on Sycamore and Indian creeks to their son George.255 How they came to own that land is unclear, since a purchase deed has not been found. In 1900, Robert was enumerated in his son Orville’s household in Ruddels Mills in Bourbon County.256 Elizabeth was not there, and Robert was listed without occupation. Ten years later, Robert and Elizabeth were enumerated together in Paris, Bourbon County, and Robert was working as an engineer at a pump station.257 The morning of Robert’s death, he woke as normal and sat on the porch for a while. He then returned to bed but did not wake up again.258 His death was unexpected, but he had been suffering the effects of kidney disease for some time. “He was a man of fine character and of a jolly, light-hearted disposition that made him a favorite with all friends.”259

PEREGRINE PHILLIPS FAMILY RECORD

Peregrine’s family record passed among his descendants through the nine- teenth and twentieth centuries. Frances (Adams) Collins implied her posses- sion of the record in 1974: “we can draw upon his Bible record and tales as told by his children to their great grandchildren.” Peregrine seems to have drawn ancestral details from a Bible—originally owned by the preacher Peregrine—brought with the family to America. According to Collins, it was destroyed in a fire in the late nineteenth century.322
