  • My Victory Song [1St Place] by Megha Sood
NAMI NJ Dara Axelrod Expressive Arts 2018 Mental Health Poetry Contest - Top Ten My victory song [1st Place] By Megha Sood My heart parts its lips utter something pure and divine like the moon in its reverie you ask "What's my song" I laugh and smile with beauty imbued with the fluttering of the butterfly wings so sublime; My heart though brimming with pain and anxiety but ready for its encore every time. My love is boundless like a star-spangled sky covering every iota of my soul; gives me the sustenance clears out the wool and webbing from my disordered thinking and makes me feel alive once more. I adorn the scars as victory marks and leaves the bloody trails as maps, who follow; Pushed and shoved aside for reasons unknown I thrash like a juggernaut crashing and crumbling the voices which pull me down I simply ignore. Waving my victory flag so fervently and singing my song under my bated breath; Here I come to conquer the uncharted waters of my life with a roar. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! NAMI NJ Dara Axelrod Expressive Arts 2018 Mental Health Poetry Contest - Top Ten ! More Than Words [2nd Place] By Laurie Goldman I tried to make the piano scream last night. I struck the keys so hard, that I could feel my fingers bruising more and more, with each passing measure. In that moment, I don’t think I cared if they broke, because, I needed my song to be heard. Ironic thing was, It wasn’t even “my song”. It was a cover of “Paint It Black” by The Rolling Stones, and, at this particular open mic, I had decided, last minute, that Mick Jagger’s lyrics needed to be heard, because, I needed to hear them.

  • GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.

  • Luke Powers Biography Luke Powers Was Born in Chattanooga, TN. He
Luke Powers Biography Luke Powers was born in Chattanooga, TN. He attended the McCallie School where he graduated as valedictorian and captain of the wrestling team. He received a Morehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Unlike his other scholars who went into fields such as medicine and law, he chose the more lucrative field of Folklore. Luke received a fellowship to Vanderbilt University, where he studied the work of his hero William Blake, and began a band called "The Four Zoas" in Blake's honor. At a Zoas' gig Luke met Brian Ahern, legendary producer of Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash and George Jones (among others). Ahern published Luke's songs and introduced him to Tommy Spurlock,producer/musician & steel-guitar wizard. Tommy had produced Rick Danko, David Olney and Chip Taylor—and played with groups including The Band, Leon Russell, Rodney Crowell, to name a few. This odd couple—a college professor and a musical “road dawg”--hit it off immediately. Luke helped Tommy with his next project Burrito Deluxe (2004): Luke wrote songs with Mark Collie and Earl Bud Lee ("Friends in Low Places") and collaborated with the legendary Sneaky Pete Kleinow of The Flying Burrito Brothers. In 2005 Spurlock got the idea of writing a protest album—against the U.S. war in Iraq, George W. Bush and the decaying state of the nation in general: Americana music of an America gone horribly wrong. Luke had already written a number of protest songs for the cause and came up with the name: Kakistocracy (meaning government by the least honest or competent).
