What are the School Games?

The School Games offer opportunities to encourage school aged young people to take part in competitive sport. The games are made up of 4 different levels of competition: Intra-school (Level 1), Inter-school (Level 2), County Finals (Level 3) and National Competitions (Level 4).

For more information on the School Games, please visit: www.yourschoolgames.com

What are the School Games Values?

There are 6 school games values which are promoted nationally to all young people to encourage them to think about the overall benefits of sport rather than only focussing on the results.

During competitions we regularly present certificates to young people who have shown at least 1 of these values whilst participating. These individuals are usually selected by the sports leaders.

What is the School Games Mark?

The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme which was launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of PE and sport across their school and into the community.

Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels. The next page shows how well the schools in the partnership are doing on this measure.

School Games Blog

The School Games website allows all registered schools to blog about their participation in the School Games in four categories, they are: Why Competition, Inclusion, Leadership and General Blogs. Blogs can be written by staff or pupils and schools can add blogs in any of the categories they choose. There is a multitude of prizes and awards available for schools who publish a blog, with awards being given for: Blog of the Week & School of the Month. Every blog published also puts the school in a draw to win vouchers for Youth Sport Direct who sell a vast array of sports equipment.

Level 2 Year 3/4 Autumn Multi Sport Competitions

The first multi sport competitions of the academic year were hosted by Beauchamp Middle, Sharnbrook Upper and Kempston Challenger Academy between the 14th and 19th October.

Over 1200 pupils took part in the tag rugby, orienteering and goalball competitions over the 3 days. 95 sports leaders from the 3 host schools took on the roles of team managers, referees and coaches during the 6 competitions, which gave them the opportunity to be role models to the younger pupils as well helping them develop their sporting skills.

The orienteering competitions were split into 2 parts. The first tested the pupils map reading skills with them taking part in a star orienteering challenge and having to find 9 clues which were spread out around the school field. The winners were the first team to collect all the clues and use them to solve the final challenge. The second part of the competition gave pupils the opportunity to work together in their teams to complete a number of problem solving activities. The activities included: Deactivate the Bomb, Crossing the Swamp, Towers of Hanoi and Hook a Duck. The teams were supported by their sports leaders who gave them hints to help them reach the correct solutions.

Congratulations to: Camestone, Carlton, Queens Park Academy, Scott, St. Lawrence, and Wilstead who were the winners of their respective competitions by collecting the clues and solving the answer in the quickest time.

30 teams from 28 different schools competed in the 6 tag rugby competitions. After a warm up activity led by the sports leaders, the games began which saw them play against each other in a round robin format. Each school was allocated a sports leader as a team manager, with additional sports leaders taking on the role of referees.

As well as being crowned the winners of the competition, the top team from each competition were invited to compete at the partnerships tag rugby finals which took place on Monday 7th November at RFC. Congratulations to: Brickhill, Bromham, Kymbrook, Kempston Rural, Lakeview and The Hills Academy for winning their qualifying competition.

In the sports halls, pupils had the opportunity to try a Paralympic sport in the form of goalball. The sports leaders delivered a short coaching session to introduce the pupils to the rules of the game and allowed them to experience being blindfolded and having to use their hearing to locate the ball. The schools were split into two teams of 5 pupils and took part in round robin competitions, giving the young people a number of games to play and develop their skills.

Congratulations to the following teams for winning the ‘A’ team competitions: Hazeldene, King’s Oak, Kempston Rural, Pinchmill, Riseley and Scott.

The ‘B’ teams winners were: Balliol, Bromham, Kings Oak, Livingstone, Riseley and St. John Rigby 2.

Well done to all of the pupils who took part across all 3 sports, there was some excellent performances across all 6 competitions. Congratulations to all our School Games value winners who were presented with a special certificates at the end of the competitions for demonstrating one or more of the values whilst competing.

Thank you to Beauchamp, Sharnbrook and Kempston Challenger for hosting our competitions and for their sports leaders who encouraged the younger pupils throughout the competitions and were a credit to their school.

Level 2 Year 3/4 Tag Rugby Finals

Bedford Blues hosted our year 3/4 tag rugby finals on Monday 7th November. The 6 winning teams from the qualifying rounds, which took place before October half term, all came to the rugby club to take part in the district finals. The qualifying teams were: Brickhill, Bromham, Kempston Rural, Kymbrook, Lakeview and The Hills. The teams were not only playing for the title of district champions, but also for a place at the Level 3 county finals. The games were refereed by coaches from the Bedford Junior Blues.

The competition started well for Brickhill as they got off to a winning start against The Hills Academy with a 3-1 score line. Kempston Rural were also off to a flying start with a 5-1 victory over Lakeview. Pitch 2 saw an extremely close game between Bromham and Kymbrook, which could have gone either way, but ended in a 2-2 draw.

Round 2 matches saw Kymbrook play against Brickhill, in a game they won 4-2 thanks to some brilliant running rugby. Kempston Rural tried to build on their earlier win but came out second best to the team from Bromham. The Hills got their first win of the competition beating Lakeview, 4-2.

Kempston Rural recorded their second win of the competition against The Hills in round 3. Kymbrook beat Lakeview in a game that was closer than the 4-0 score line suggests and over on pitch 1 Bromham beat Brickhill.

In round 4 Lakeview came closest to getting their first win of the competition in a close game with Brickhill that was only decided by a Brickhill try scored in the last minute. Kymbrook continued their run of wins with a victory against Lakeview. The Hills came close to forcing a draw against Bromham in a close 2-1 game but Bromham managed to hold on to maintain their unbeaten run.

Going in to the final round of matches, it was all to play for at the top, with Bromham and Kymbrook tied on points, only separated by try difference. Bromham beat Lakeview to secure 1st place after Kymbrook were held to a 0-0 draw by The Hills, who had improved massively throughout the morning. In another important game Brickhill took on Kempston Rural for 3rd place in a very close game which was a fantastic show of end to end rugby. Kempston Rural came out on top thanks to 2 brilliant solo tries.

Congratulations to Bromham, who were undefeated and crowned the district champions for 2016 as well as qualifying through to represent us at the Level 3 county finals. Well done to Kymbrook who were also undefeated runners up and secured the final place at the county finals, which will take place on Friday 3rd March at .

A big thank you to Bedford Blues for hosting the competition. Thank you to Ben from the Bedford Blues community team and Camillo, who plays for the senior team for supporting the event and presenting the medals to the winners and engaging with the teams. The event would not have been possible without the support of the coaches from Bedford Junior Blues who not only refereed the matches, but also taught the pupils as they played.

Final Standings:

1st– Bromham. 2nd– Kymbrook. 3rd– Kempston Rural. 4th– Brickhill. 5th– The Hills. 6th– Lakeview. Page 6

Leadership Academy The Leadership Academy is open to pupils in years 9 to 11, who have been selected by their PE Department as they have shown an interest in developing their leadership skills. The programme allows pupils to gain leadership experience in a number of sports which are delivered by National Governing Bodies and provide the skills and knowledge which are transferrable when volunteering at partnership and school competitions. During the year, students have the opportunity to experience many different sports as well as a basic first aid course which will help them in all areas of their life.

Sports Hall Athletics

The first leadership academy session took place on Tuesday 22nd November. 22 year 9 students from Sharnbrook Upper School under took a qualification in sports hall athletics. The 2 hour session gave the pupils an introduction to officiating and scoring the 8 field activities which included: vertical jump, five strides, long jump, triple jump and shot putt. They were also educated in a variety of track events where they would take roles such as: demonstrator, time keeper, scorer and fault judges.

Following the training, these students had a chance to put these new found skills into practice by officiating at the Yr 3/4, Yr 5/6, Yr 7 and Yr 8 district sports hall athletics competitions which took place over two days in December. The events saw 1029 pupils from 39 schools compete. As well as scoring the events, the sports leaders were able to help develop the younger pupils skills and encourage them throughout the competitions.

A big thank you to the Sharnbrook sports leaders for being fantastic role models and for volunteering over 100 hours delivering the competitions.

The next Leadership Academy sessions will take place on Wednesday 25th January at Kempston Challenger Academy and Tuesday 7th February at Sharnbrook Upper School. Both sessions will be first aid and be delivered by St. John’s Ambulance.

Sharnbrook Sports Ambassadors Introduce PGCE Students to Inclusive Sports On Friday 11th November, 6 Sports Ambassadors from Sharnbrook Upper School went to the University of Bedfordshire to deliver a session on inclusive sports to the secondary Physical Education PGCE cohort.

32 students took part in the session, where they learnt about applying the STEP (Space, Task, Equipment & People) principle to their lessons and learnt how to teach and play 5 new inclusive sports. The ambassadors each took charge of a sport and led the students through 5 mini sessions in; seated volleyball, boccia, new age kurling, goalball and zone basketball.

The ambassadors gave an introduction to each activity, ideas on how to teach the activities and gave the students a chance for a short practical application of each activity. This allowed them to experience the game and see how using the STEP principle can allow the activities to be played and adapted to suit all young people.

Thank you to the 6 Sports Ambassadors from Sharnbrook, they all did a fantastic job and gave the students a real insight in to the inclusive activities. Page 7

Logo Competition Winners Announced The School Games programme is a combination of sport and cultural competitions. Our first cultural competition took place in the second half of the autumn term by challenging young people in KS1 and KS2 to design a logo for our School Games t-shirts. The theme of this years logo was ‘Self-Belief’ . Well done to all the young people who entered the competition, it was great to see so many budding artists in the making as well as seeing what self belief means to them.

It was a very difficult decision to chose the winners from the many entries we had. The 4 finalists who were selected by the Sharnbrook Sports Leaders were: Aryiana from Brickhill Lower, Ella from Castle Newnham Lower, Lucas from Goldington Green Academy and Adrian from Hazeldene Lower.

The 2 winning designs will be printed on the School Games t-shirts which will be worn by all Bedford competitors at the Summer School Games. The young artists will also be invited to attend the opening ceremony of the Summer School Games as flag bearers and to showcase their logos.

Congratulations to Lucas and Adrian from Goldington Green Academy and Hazeldene Lower respectively for being selected as the winners of the 2016 Logo competition.

Team Up Programme Launched (continued from front page)

The Team Up campaign wants to get the country behind their teams in the lead up to and after the 3 World Cups and they have launched the Team Up Teddy as a way of increasing participation in the three sports amongst girls. The Team Up Teddy is a super fan of girls sport and wants to support as many girls as possible in the lead up to the three world cups. Each teddy comes with its own passport, which is a way of tracking how far the teddy has travelled supporting girls sport.

The Team Up Teddy loves going to fixtures and supporting the teams who are playing. Take photos of the teddy with the team, on the mini bus on the way to a match or cheering from the sidelines. Tweet your photos, scores and updates to @teamupengland with #TeamUpTeddy, making sure you tag us in too (@bedfordssps), so that each teddy’s progress can be tracked and the ECB, England Hockey and England Netball can celebrate with you. After your match, make sure you fill out the passport and then pass the teddy and the passport to your opposition and ask them to take it to their next fixture and continue the teddy’s journey. Inclusive Goalball

Our first inclusive competition of this academic year took place on Wednesday 5th October at the Bunyan Centre. 71 pupils from 6 schools took part in the Paralympic sport known as Goalball. Goalball is a unique sport as the ball contains a bell and it is usually played by people with a visual impairment or in this case by young people who were blindfolded.

The event was officiated by 11 sports leaders from Bedford Academy. For many of these pupils it was their first experience of sports leadership and they did a fantastic job encouraging the pupils and explaining the rules to them. They had only learnt the rules themselves earlier that morning, and most of them had never heard of the sport previously.

Each team had the opportunity to play 5 or 6 matches, before the playoff games took place. Congratulations to Arnold A for being the overall winners after beating Henlow A in the final, and Robert Bloomfield for finishing 3rd and 4th with their D and A teams respectively.

Thank you to the Bedford Academy sports leaders for being great role models and we look forward to working with you again in the near future at our next inclusive competition. Year 1/2 Multi Skills Competitions

On Wednesday 9th, Thursday 10th and Tuesday 15th November we held our Key Stage 1 multi skills competitions. Over 1100 KS1 pupils from 43 lower and primary schools across Bedford, Kempston and North Bedfordshire attended and took part in a carousel of activities designed to develop their fundamental movement skills of: agility, balance and coordination.

For the year 1 pupils, this was their first experience of a large Level 2 competition and we could sense an air of nervousness before the start of each competition. However, this quickly vanished as soon as the introductory speech was completed and the children had a chance to start their first activity.

Each host school provided a team of sports leaders whose job it was to coach and lead their team through the 8 different activities. The young leaders taught each group how to complete the activities and used demonstrations to make sure every child understood what they needed to do. The leaders also collected the scores so the pupils could see how well they did.

The activities that each team completed included: a hockey dribble, which challenged the pupil’s to dribble a hockey ball in and out of 5 cones. A throwing accu- racy challenge, which saw the youngsters attempt to successfully get 4 beanbags in to the correct targets. A tennis slalom run, which had to be completed whilst balancing a ball on the strings of a tennis racquet and a speed bounce challenge which saw the children try to successfully complete 20 speed bounce jumps in the fastest possible time. It was brilliant to see all of the children engaged and participating in activities they may not have experienced before.

Well done to all of the pupils who took part in the multi skills events at: Biddenham, Lincroft and St. Thomas More. All of the children who attended the competitions had fun and worked really hard trying to improve their fundamental skills. Congratulations to the 6 pupils who were nominated by the sports leaders at each event to take home one of the School Games value awards for showing: determination, passion, honesty, respect, self belief or teamwork.

Thank you to the 55 sports leaders (all pictured below) from the 3 host schools who volunteered for a total of 257 hours over the 3 days, and were superb role models to the younger children. They did an excellent job making sure the children had a safe and enjoyable time at the competition. Finally, thank you to our 3 host schools for allowing us to hold our events on your site and providing your fantastic sports leaders.

Ampthill Rugby 7’s Competition

Ampthill Rugby Club hosted a developmental year 9 rugby 7’s tournament for schools across the county on Thursday 13th October. Schools were invited to attend the club to take part in a coaching session led by club coaches and before competing in a tournament against the other schools in attendance. Each team were only allowed a maximum of 2 club players on the pitch, which meant there was a large number of boys experiencing rugby at a competitive level for the first time.

The teams were split into 3 pools and all played in matches against the other teams in their group. They were then separated in to more evenly matched play off groups based on the results of the first group matches. The four best teams played off for first place in one group, whilst the other 9 teams were split across a further two play off groups.

Well done to Sharnbrook who won the competition, finishing unbeaten and only conceding 3 tries throughout the competition. Page 13
