What’s New? Niihama City No.266 October 2017 Published by SGG Niihama What is the personality of Ehimeites? Keiko Uraji, a gift concierge (from Ehime Shimbun May 4, 2017) I found an interesting article on SNS the other day. “Institute of Media Plus” conducted research on the stress index of about 70,000 women from age 20 to 69 all over Japan and it announced the ranking of "low-stress" prefectures. “Low-stress” means that a person feels fine in their daily life and keeps a balanced mind against stress. Surprisingly, the women of Ehime have the least stress in Japan. They pointed out the reasons why the women of Ehime have low-stress: 1. mild climate 2. few disasters 3. many gentle people 4. many hot springs 5. nature near the town 6. strong love for their hometown Indeed!! I quite agree with what they say. Ehimeites are commonly accepted as gentle and easygoing. Ehime is blessed with a mild climate so people did not have to work so hard to get food compared to other regions. As a result they evolved to be gentle and easygoing. Although generally they are fine and easygoing, they can also be quite hasty. They tend to turn right impatiently before a car passing straight in the opposite lane. This risky way of driving is often seen. This bad habit gave birth to the shameful expression “Iyo no Hayamagari”, which roughly translates to "People in Ehime behind the steering wheel turns right instantly" (Iyo refers to the old name of Ehime). My husband often comments that my personality is hasty, but also optimistic and positive.

What’s New? Niihama City No.271 March 2018 Published by SGG Niiham 3 Sojourn Andika Agung Wijaya It’s been 3 years since I came to this little town. Thinking back now, these years flew in no time. I remembered the first day here seeing Sakura petals, falling elegantly to the ground, making a beautiful scene of sea of Sakura. While breathing in the fresh air of a new beginning, I stepped my feet to the unknown. The year before, I was studying Japanese at Shinjuku, Tokyo. I was very lucky to make friends with many international students who came from many countries— Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Mongolia, Gabon, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Laos, Iran, Uganda, Cameroon, Guinea, Kenya. These people opened my mind to realize how big this world we live in. Many culture with many ways of life. Nevertheless, we respect each other differences, and relying on just a simple gesture of smile we can be friends. Never in my wildest dream did I think that after I graduate from the language school I must go to Niihama. It was shocking for me at first to be sent to a middle of nowhere. The first thing I learnt about the place is no other than its delicious mikan (tangerine). I shook in excitement because after a whole year living with international students I will finally live together with the Japanese, or so I thought. Entering Japanese society, I realized that it is different from what I have imagined. The culture shock comes after about 2 years living in Japan.

  • Notes on the Distribution of the Vandenboschia Radicans Complex (Hymenophyllaceae) in Japan
Bull. Natl. Mus. Nat. Sci., Ser. B, 35(2), pp. 71–89, June 22, 2009 Notes on the Distribution of the Vandenboschia radicans Complex (Hymenophyllaceae) in Japan Atsushi Ebihara Department of Botany, National Museum of Nature and Science, Amakubo 4–1–1, Tsukuba, 305–0005 Japan E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The distribution of eight species and four hybrids included in the Vandenboschia radi- cans complex within Japan is reviewed. Distribution maps for each taxon are provided based on herbarium specimens, which are listed in order of municipality code. Key words:Distribution, Hymenophyllaceae, Japan, Vandenboschia. Introduction were embedded in V. ϫstenosiphon and V. ϫ Vandenboschia subgen. Vandenboschia (Hy- quelpaertensis, respectively because it is diffi- menophyllaceae) distributed in world temperate/ cult to discriminate amphidiploids from sterile subtropical regions encompasses a number of hybrids sharing the same genome combinations morphologically ill-defined species, and they are (but different genome dosage). As shown in the tentatively lumped under a species complex discriminant analysis (Ebihara et al., 2009), some named “Vandenboschia radicans complex”. As of the redefined taxa morphologically overlap for Japanese members of the complex, Ebihara with each other. Therefore, descriptions and keys et al. (2005a) clarified their biological entities by do not always provide sufficient information for DNA/ploidy analyses, and Ebihara et al. (2009) their identification. Digital images of examined reexamined their taxonomic properties. Since the specimens (only those deposited in TNS), to number of samples analyzed in these studies is compensate the difficulty, are accessible via on- still limited, it is necessary to examine as many line database (http://www.vspecimens.net/).

Japan relied heavily on neighboring China, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan in imports of mineral fuels, which included coal, crude petroleum, northeastern Asia and Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and liquefied natural gas (LNG), and uranium, and a wide variety of Thailand in southeastern Asia. crude ore and concentrates of nonfuel minerals to meet the raw In 2001, the Japanese economy slipped into its second material requirements for the large manufacturing and utility recession in the past 5 years following a 2-year positive growth (electricity and gas) sectors of its economy. path during 1999 and 2000.
