EDUCATION The area is fortunate to be served by a number of academically sound public school systems, as well as private/parochial schools.

Channelview Independent School District (CISD) The Channelview Independent School District is a rapidly growing school district with 9,500 students. The mission of CISD is to provide an educational program which will develop and enhance our students' intellec- tual, social, emotional and physical growth in order to encourage them to become creative, responsible, patriotic contributing members of society. Inherent within this mission is the belief that all students can learn, and that school can make a difference in the lives of its students.

Channelview ISD is a 6A school district located in an unincorporated area situated on the Houston Ship Channel approximately 15 miles east of downtown Houston.

The district has twelve campuses, an administration building, fairgrounds, maintenance headquarters and a transportation facility. There is a Pre-K center, sev- en elementary schools, two junior high schools, one ninth grade center, one high school, an alternative high school.

Special programs are available to all students through accelerated programs, special education, bilingual education, English as a Second Language, vocational education, gifted and talented education, and advanced placement and honors programs.

Channelview ISD has a rich history of being “actively engaged in the future of our community” with the school district being established in 1937. At that time the district employed eight teachers. Galena Park Independent School District (GPISD) encompasses 33 square miles along the ship channel in east Harris County. The district has a current enrollment of more than 22,000 students on 26 campuses and employs approximately 3,200 people. Through the commitment of dedicated staff and supportive parents, GPISD ensures all students receive a rich and inspiring education. The District provides many learning opportunities to foster curiosity, creativity and participation in the world.

Excellence in All, For All, By All is the focus of GPISD. The District is committed to preparing students to become productive citizens and lifelong learners. Sheldon Independent School District (SISD), Sheldon ISD is one of the fastest growing school districts in the Houston area. The district currently serves a diverse student population of more than 10,280 on 12 campuses in northeast Harris Coun- ty. Houston Community College (HCC) Northeast, established in 1990, is one of six colleges in the Houston Community College System. Located in Houston’s industrial nucleus, HCC Northeast focuses on preparing students for high-demand technical and vocational occupations. Career programs and services are offered at instructional centers across northeast Houston that include Northline Campus, North Forest Campus, Pinemont Center, Automotive Technology Training Center, and the Northeast Campus. The Northeast Campus at 555 Community College Drive in east Houston is comprised of five high-tech educational facilities that allow students to obtain hands-on career training with state of-the- art equipment and instruments. Campus facilities include the Codwell Hall, Learning Hub, Roland Smith Truck Driving Academy, Public Safety Center of Excellence and Global Energy Center of Excellence. Surrounded by manufacturing, chemical, petroleum, engineering and energy businesses, the HCC Global Energy Center of Excellence is a direct conduit for industries looking to sup- plement its workforce with trained workers with hands-on experience in the energy industry. HCC Northeast also provides dual credit and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education opportunities for high school students through a partnership with Houston ISD. Additionally, HCC Northeast is one of the largest vocational contributors to the city’s emergency response industry through its exemplary programs offered at the Public Safety Center of Excellence. San Jacinto College has been serving the citizens of East Harris County for more than 50 years. The North Campus, one of the College’s four campuses, is a pillar for higher education and workforce training in the region. The College is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, and offers 186 degrees and certificates, with 46 technical programs and a university transfer division.
