These men—and now women—set aside their personal and professional affairs to join or form military organizations. And, once the crisis was resolved, resumed their civilian occupations until they were again needed as soldiers. This was especially a characteristic of frontiersmen, one which they carried with them In the 1820’s and 1830’s as their line of settlement moved beyond the western border of the United States of America into the Spanish and then Mexican territory of Texas. I. CONTEXT 7 The area now known as Baytown was home to many who, arriving as early as 1822, would 8 9 become active in the struggle for Texas independence that culminated in 1836. Nathaniel Lynch, for whom the town of Lynchburg is named, arrived in Texas in the summer of 1822 with his wife and three children. On his one-league Mexican land grant, he established a trading post and a sawmill. 10 Together with Arthur McCormick, he operated the Lynchburg Ferry, which has been in continuous 11 12 operation since 1822. David Gouverneur Burnet brought a steam sawmill to the area in 1831. Midway Landing was not a town speculation, but the dock area on Black Duck Bay at the plantation 13 14 of William Scott, who had purchased the land from John D. -

This presentation is intended to provide some basic information about 3 subjects: First, Why might a flood protection system be needed for the urbanized, eastern part of Galveston Island? Second, What might a flood protection system be? Third, Why not just tag along with other big projects and just let someone from somewhere else tell Galveston Island what Galveston needs to do and what they are going to allow Galveston to do? Summary of Amendments to Lake Conroe Rules and Regulations
SUMMARY OF AMENDMENTS TO LAKE CONROE RULES AND REGULATIONS SJRA welcomes any comments or questions concerning the proposed amendments to the Lake Conroe Reservoir Rules and Regulation. Please feel free to submit them to [email protected] by May 15, 2015. The Lake Conroe Rules and Regulations (the "Rules") were last amended on August 28, 2003. The proposed amendments reformat and restructure the Rules. This allows for reference to specific Rule provisions by Chapter, Section, Subsection and Subdivision. The revisions were requested by Montgomery County law enforcement so that citations could be issued with reference(s) to the specific provisions of the Rules. Aside from reformatting and restructuring the Rules, the proposed amendments make the following substantive revisions to the Rules (summarized below by Chapter): 1. Definitions. Certain definitions were added or clarified. Notably, the term "Private Structure" was added to refer to a basin, pier, wharf, floating structure, boat dock, or any other structure providing for anchorage or storage of Vessels that is privately owned or operated and not associated with a commercial operation. A "Marina" is defined to apply to the same types of structures, with the difference being that they are associated with a commercial operation. The term "Encroachment" is revised to refer to any structure, building, appurtenance or other fixture permanently placed upon Authority land, that cannot be immediately removed from Authority land, or that otherwise infringes upon the rights of the Authority in and to Authority land. 2. Boating. The proposed amendments specify the various federal and state laws and regulations that apply to the operation of boats and vessels on Lake Conroe. -

Appendix A 2012 Texas Integrated Report - Texas 303(d) List (Category 5) 2012 Texas Integrated Report - Texas 303(d) List (Category 5) As required under Sections 303(d) and 304(a) of the federal Clean Water Act, this list identifies the water bodies in or bordering Texas for which effluent limitations are not stringent enough to implement water quality standards, and for which the associated pollutants are suitable for measurement by maximum daily load. In addition, the TCEQ also develops a schedule identifying Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) that will be initiated in the next two years for priority impaired waters. Issuance of permits to discharge into 303(d)-listed water bodies is described in the TCEQ regulatory guidance document Procedures to Implement the Texas Surface Water Quality Standards (January 2003, RG-194). Impairments are limited to the geographic area described by the Assessment Unit and identified with a six or seven-digit AU_ID. A TMDL for each impaired parameter will be developed to allocate pollutant loads from contributing sources that affect the parameter of concern in each Assessment Unit. The TMDL will be identified and counted using a six or seven-digit AU_ID. Water Quality permits that are issued before a TMDL is approved will not increase pollutant loading that would contribute to the impairment identified for the Assessment Unit. Explanation of Column Headings SegID and Name: The unique identifier (SegID), segment name, and location of the water body. The SegID may be one of two types of numbers. The first type is a classified segment number (4 digits, e.g., 0218), as defined in Appendix A of the Texas Surface Water Quality Standards (TSWQS). -

Let's Build the Ike Dike
Let’s Build the Ike Dike William Merrell One hundred years ago in response to the 1900 Great Storm, we built a seawall to protect the East End of Galveston Island from storm surge. The seawall was severely tested by the 1915 Hurricane and again many times after. It stands today as a testimony to the community leaders who funded it and the engineers who designed and built it. The seawall continues to do its job of preventing catastrophic overflows. In the early 1900s, the seawall was a reasonable response to protecting the most precious manmade infrastructure in the region which was then concentrated on Galveston Island. However, over the last century, we have developed many large human settlements and industrial centers throughout the entire Galveston Bay region. In addition to representing considerable wealth, this human footprint now restricts or prevents movements of natural ecosystems in response to storm surge. It is no longer enough to strive to protect Galveston Island alone, we need to protect the entire Galveston Bay region from coastal flooding. Not surprisingly all community leaders are interested in protecting their citizens from the many real and hidden costs of flooding. Recent discussions have focused on building a dike around the east end of Galveston Island - essentially surrounding the area now behind the seawall. This approach argues that, while the seawall did its job in preventing catastrophic overflows like that at Bolivar, a surrounding dike is needed to prevent the backfilling of the Island by heightened bay waters. On the mainland, because the existing Texas City Dike was almost topped, discussions have begun about strengthening it and increasing its height. -
