May 31, 1916, the Battle of Jutland (or Skagerrakschlact as it is krnwn •. to the Germans), was fought between the British Grand Fleet, under the command of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, and the German High Seas Fleet commanded by Admiral Reinhold Scheer. It was to be the largest nava~ bat tle and the only full.-scale clash between battleships of the war. The British Grand Fleet was com posed of 151 warships, among which were 28 bat:leships and nine battle cruisers, wiile the German High Seas Fleet consisted of 99 war ships, including 16 battleships and 54 battle cruisers. Contact between these mighty fleets was made shortly after 2pm, when HMS Galatea reported that she had sighted the enemy. The first British disaster occured at 4pm, when, while engaging SMS Von der Tann, HMS Indefatigable was hit by a salvo onherupperdeck. The amidships. Twisting the Dragon’s Tail H.M.S. Vindictive H.M.S. Vindictive was an Arrogant-class protected cruiser built at H.M. Dockyard Portsmouth. She was launched in December 1897 and commissioned in July 1900, entering service with the Mediterranean Squadron. The Arrogant class was designed to operate with the main battle fleet; being intended to finish off crippled enemy ships by ramming, and were originally described as "Fleet Rams". She was refitted between 1909 and 1910 for service in the 3rd Division of the Home H.M.S. Vindictive (as built): Armament (1900): Fleet, during which the 4.7” guns were replaced by additional 6” guns. Displacement: 5,750 tons 4 × QF 6-inch (152 mm) guns Obsolescent by the outbreak of First World War, in August 1914 she was assigned Length: 342 ft. (104 m) 6 × 4.7-inch (120 mm) guns to the 9th Cruiser Squadron and captured the German merchantmen Schlesien and Beam: 57 ft. 6 in (17.5m) 8 × 12-pounder (3-inch, 76 mm) guns Slawentzitz on 7 August and 8 September respectively. In 1915 she was stationed Speed: 19 knots (35 km/h; 22 mph) 3 × 3-pounder (47 mm) guns on the southeast coast of South America and from 1916 to late 1917 she served in 3 × 18 inch (450 mm) torpedo tubes the White Sea. Early in 1918 she was extensively modified at H.M. Dockyard Chatham in preparation for the Zeebrugge Raid. She was fitted with an 11-inch howitzer on her quarter-deck and two 7.5 inch howitzers for engaging the German guns at the shore end of the Mole and for firing on the locks and seaplane base. -

The first four of Britain’s new cutting-edge aircraft have arrived into RAF Marham; their new home in Norfolk. They touched down after a trans- Atlantic flight from the United States, where Britain has more of the jets and 150 personnel in training. The F-35 Lightnings took off from Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and were flown by British pilots of the newly-reformed RAF 617 Squadron, which was immortalised by the famous Dambusters’ raid of World War II. This autumn, the first landing of the F-35 will take place on HMS Queen Elizabeth in the next phase of trials. 1 PHILIPPINE SEA (June 20, 2018) An EA-18G Growler assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron (VFA) 141 lands on the flight deck of the US Navy's forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). It involved more ships than any previous naval battle. It also came at an awkward time in the development of power-driven warships. Their speed was much greater, but communication by radio was still in its infancy and radar had not been invented, while funnel smoke made communications by flags or light much more difficult. The potential for things to go wrong – always very great in sea battles – was greater than ever. There was, understandably, public disappointment with the result, but there is no doubt that it was fought with the highest courage and determination under the most difficult and challenging conditions. Whatever the judgement on the outcome, this commemoration of the centenary of the Battle is focused on the endurance and gallantry of all those who took part, on both sides, and particularly, on those who lost their lives. -

But Scheer evaded the British once more and the German fleet disappeared into the mist, firing off torpedoes at its pursuers. Jellicoe followed his pre-battle plans for such a situation and turned away to avoid the torpedoes. By the time he could turn back and pursue the Germans, they had effectively escaped. As night fell, there were some small clashes that lasted through into the next morning. By then, the opportunity to inflict any real damage on the High Seas Fleet had been lost and Jellicoe was unwilling to engage in serious night fighting. In the confusion and darkness, the German fleet managed to get away. Jellicoe has been criticised for the outcome of the Battle of Jutland. It was felt that he was too cautious in his dealing with the Germans and should have taken a more aggressive approach. His defenders, however, note the significant risk of losing the fleet — a vital aspect of Britain's wartime defence — as explanation for his calculated restraint. In November , Jellicoe was appointed First Sea Lord and never again took part in operations at sea. -
