LE7 7HU (0116-2366474) LOUGHBOROUGH IN BLOOM The civic gardeners and park keepers do a great job in Loughborough (Queen’s Park looked fantastic this summer) but this article is about the effort to record the ‘wild’ plants in our town. Local botanists are working hard to update the distribution of plants for a new national atlas – a project promoted by the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI). The emphasis is on wild plants, but all species that have found their way into ‘wild’ places are within the scope of the survey. Three LNC members have been particularly active in the Loughborough area: Steve Woodward, Helen Ikin and Hazel Graves. The recording unit is the tetrad, a grid square measuring 2x2 km, and the objective is to make a complete list of vascular plants (flowers, trees, IN THIS EDITION grasses, ferns, etc.) for each one. The town is spread across nine tetrads, centred on SK51J. Steve and Helen have made a point of visiting all of them CLASSIFIED RECORDS (see map), though none has been covered thoroughly. Hazel, accompanied by Sara Botterell, Ÿ Mammals Page 3 has concentrated on a couple of adjacent squares Ÿ Birds Page 4 (SK52L Stanford and SK52R Hoton). Of course, any unusual plants are recorded with better precision, Ÿ Reptiles and Amphibians Page 9 typically a 100 m grid square. Details of all records go the BSBI via the Vice-county Recorder. -
A Year in the Life of the Village During the Pandemic
1 Header April 2021 Body of text A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF THE VILLAGE DURING THE PANDEMIC As this edition of the News is published just over a year after the first national lockdown, I thought it would be good to remind ourselves of all the amazing support and lockdown activities that have taken place. I refer to some individuals by name but please forgive the fact that I am unable to name check everyone. As we went into the first lockdown the Parish Council provided funds for some mobile phones and the shop swung into action setting up prescription and food delivery/emergency help Whatsapp groups as well as establishing a team of street wardens to keep a check on any residents who may not have had access to social media. Both prescription delivery from Eyam and street wardens are still in operation. Peter O’Brien, our District Councillor, kept us posted on information from Derbyshire County Council and, most importantly for many of us, details of bin collections! Even during these difficult times stalwart volunteers, along with managers Sarah and Andrew kept the shop open and it even went online. The virtual shop idea which evolved from that is developing further and will hopefully mean an expanded range of goods available online sometime over the summer. Our local Spar (White’s)introduced a delivery service which along with our shop provided a lifeline to those who were shielding and found it impossible to get a delivery from one of the large supermarkets. It was hard to go hungry when Terry from the Sir William decided to start fish and chip Friday with delivery by Diane and Bob Wilson and John and Pauline Bowman. -

This study shows how forest regrowth affects beetle species associated with old oaks in south-eastern Sweden. Beetles were trapped by pitfall traps placed in hollows and window traps placed near hollows in oak trunks in pasture woodlands. We assessed the influence of forest regrowth, tree size and original canopy cover on the species richness of saproxylic beetles (a total of 120 species identified) and the occurrence of 68 saproxylic beetle species in particular. -

SCHIGEL RÉSUMÉ. — La collecte et l’élevage de coléoptères fongivores — Le travail routinier d’étude sur le terrain et en laboratoire des coléoptères associés aux fructifi cations fongiques est décrit depuis la récolte et l’élevage jusqu’à la conservation de collections. Cet article inclut des instructions concernant la base de données, effi cace et facile d’utilisation, documentant les interactions champignons – coléoptères à partir de fi ches de terrain. Les facteurs environnementaux infl uençant les coléoptères fongivores sont discutés. Le protocole d’élevage de coléoptères adultes à partir de larves habitant les fructifi cations fongiques est décrit. Des méthodes de préparation et de gestion de collections de référence de coléoptères et de champignons sont proposées. Mots-clés: Polypores, saproxylie, mycophagie, champignons du bois mort, base de données. SUMMARY. — The fi eld and lab work routine for study of Coleoptera associated with fungal fruit bod- ies is described from sampling and rearing to preservation of collections. This paper includes instructions for the effi cient and database-friendly documenting the fungus–beetle interactions using the fi eld forms. Environmental factors that infl uence the fungivorous beetles are discussed. The procedure of rearing adult Coleoptera from larvae inhabiting fungal fruit bodies is described. Preparation and storage approaches of reference collections of beetles and fungi are outlined. Keywords: Polypores, saproxyly, mycophagy, wood-rotting fungi, database. Fruit bodies of polypores, poroid non-bolete Basidiomycetes, serve as food substrate for the numerous larvae and adults of Coleoptera. -

His photo is of a Spring Starflower or Springstar , part of the onion and amyrillis family. The flowers are honey scented, which is no doubt what attracted the ant. Alfie is a keen photographer with his own Olympus DSLR camera, and this scene caught his eye under a large yew tree at the bottom of Church Lane. His creativity is not limited just to photography: Alfie loves cats and in Year 5 he and a friend made a comic called Cat Man! A total of 39 people took part in our photographic competition this year and we hope you had fun and found it an interesting challenge. We have all had to adapt our ways of doing things over the last year and transferring this competition to an online format, though different, has been a great success. Now that we are beginning to open up and get back to our normal lives, maybe this is the blueprint for the future of the competition? 39 people submitted a total of 124 photographs across the four categories, with nearly 100 taking part in voting for their favourite entry. Lott Creophilus maxillosus (Graham Calow) LESOPS 24 (2011) ISSN 0957 – 1019 Correspondence: 5 Welland Road, Barrow upon Soar, LE12 8NA VC55 Staphylinids Part 1 2 Introduction With over 56,000 described species in the world, the Staphylinidae are the largest family in the animal kingdom (Grebennikov & Newton, 2009). Around a quarter of the British beetles are rove beetles, so they represent an important component of biodiversity in Britain. However, because of perceived difficulties in their identification, they have not received the attention that they merit. This paper aims to play a part in redressing that imbalance by listing all reliable records from Leicestershire and Rutland for the different species and analysing which species have declined locally over 100 years of recording rove beetles and which have prospered. The subfamilies treated in this first part include the largest and most conspicuous species in the family. The geographical area covered is the vice county of Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55). Some records from adjacent banks of the River Soar that technically lie in Nottinghamshire are also included. These records can be distinguished by the use of Nottinghamshire parish names. Identification Staphylinidae can be easily recognised among beetles in the field by their short wing cases that leave five or six segments of the abdomen exposed and flexible. In fact they look more like earwigs than other beetles. For identification to species, all the members of the subfamilies in this part will be covered by the forthcoming Royal Entomological Society handbook to Staphylinidae parts 6 and 7 due for publication in 2011. -

LEICESTERSHIRE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY The Craneflies of Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55) John Kramer* Tipula maxima – Graham Calow LESOPS 26 (2011) ISSN 0957 - 1019 *31 Ash Tree Road, Oadby, Leicester LE2 5TE 1 Introduction It is necessary to say at the outset that, since craneflies are not a scientific group, its meaning has changed over the years. It seems to be synonymous with daddy long-legs , meaning all long-legged two-winged flies. These, in the past, have included Winter Gnats (Trichoceridae) Fold-winged flies (Ptychopteridae) and Dixidae. The present meaning, used here, is restricted to the super-family Tipuloidea (Order Diptera) which, for the past 20 years (Starý 1992), has been composed of four families - Tipulidae, Pediciidae, Cylindrotomidae and Limoniidae. I have tried to provide a firm basis for further work on craneflies in VC55, and to suggest what that work might be. There are voucher specimens for most, though not all, of the records and wherever there is only a single record, more records are needed to firmly establish that species on the county list. Pioneering work in Europe Before any meaningful lists of craneflies could be produced it was necessary to have fixed and unambiguous names for them. The genus-species naming system for doing this was first provided for the then-known craneflies by the 1758 volume of Linnaeus’s Systemae Naturae , published in Sweden, so this date provides a starting-point. Linnaeus named 14 of the more conspicuous craneflies on the British Checklist. Johan Christian Fabricius was a student of Linnaeus and did more work than his mentor on insects. -
