(Champaign: University of Illinois Press, 2011. 288 pp. Illustrations, notes, index. $45.) Once upon a time, the latest book illustrated by Howard Pyle (1853–1910) was on every American child’s wish list. In the meantime, youngsters could enjoy his vivid portrayals of history and legend in the pages of St. Nicholas, Everybody’s, Collier’s, Century, Scribner’s, and Harper’s magazines. Though not a household name today, Pyle was the preeminent illustrator of the Gilded Age, and his visual interpretations of the American Revolution, Robin Hood and his Merry Men, the Knights of the Round Table, and a motley crew of pirates were indelibly printed on the imaginations of several generations. Now a new book published in conjunction with the centenary of Howard Pyle’s death has redis- covered this forgotten icon of the popular culture. The subject is custom-made for authors Jill P. May, professor of literacy and language, and Robert E. May, professor of history (both at Purdue University), who bring to this work their expertise in fields beyond the history of art. This is not a coffee-table book but the first extensively documented biography of Howard Pyle. Although their paths diverged after the period covered by the diaries, he and Sloan were very close in 1906. Henri's wife, Linda, had died the month before the dairies began and Henri, very lonely, visited the Sloans often. Henri's name was originally Robert Henry Cozad, but the family abandoned the use of "Cozad." His father and mother adopted the surname "Lee" and Henri's brother John became "Frank L. Southrn." This comes with a magnificent account of the year’s exhibitions in Stockbridge and across the nation, educational and community programs, scholarship to advance illustration art, and curatorial achievements. This remarkable Museum does all of this and more, inspired by the values Norman Rockwell depicted in his iconic paintings. His works portray freedom, tolerance, humanity and kindness, integrity, honesty, and authenticity along with a joyfulness and celebration of life. These values inspire our visitors and staff alike. The Museum concluded its fiscal year on June 30, 2012 in a strong position. As noted a year ago, we eliminated our long-term debt. This year we are pleased to report that we have no short-term Norman Rockwell Museum President Anne Morgan borrowing on our balance sheet. Annual attendance at the Museum has generated good revenue, and and Chairman Thomas we saw nationwide interest and attendance grow for our traveling exhibition program as well. L. Pulling. The Idaho Librarian A publication of The Idaho Library Association (ISSN: 2151-7738) The Father of Illustration: From Boston to Boise by Memo Cordova, Boise State University The Special Collections and Archives (SCA) unit at Boise State University’s Albertsons Library houses materials specific to the history of the university and the state as a whole. Among its many documents, personal correspondence, artifacts, and ephemera, the unit also houses three large framed etchings donated by Lois Chaffee, wife of President/Chancellor Eugene B. Chaffee (1936 to 1970), in 1988. These three pieces are signed etchings from paintings done by famed 20th century American illustrator and author Howard Pyle (1853-1911). Anyone familiar with the stories of the American West, World Wars, or the lore and fantasy of faraway lands populated by pirates, buccaneers, and ne’er-do-wells that were popular in the 1880s through the 1950s will have come across the illustrative works of artists such as N. C. Wyeth, Harvey Dunn, Violet Oakley, Jessie Willcox Smith, Frank Schoonover, Elizabeth Shippen Green, and Maxfield Parrish, among others. The wondrous illustrations that accompanied such stories elevated the genre and placed these artists as masters of the visual narrative.
