Based on the Ingmar Bergman film “Smiles on a Summer Night,” the five-time Tony winning musical features an elaborate score of waltzes, including the Grammy-winning “Send in the Clowns.” Night Music features the most iconic traits of Sondheim’s repertoire, boasting a complex score riddled with hilarious wit. A delicate dream of a musical, the sentimental comedy follows a trio of mismatched lovers as they twist, turn, and tumble toward their true love. While the material is sure to impress, make no mistake that the lavish costumes and luxurious set will invite Gallery’s audiences for a taste of “The Glamorous Life.” Leading the cast in the role of Desiree Armfeldt is Rita Rehn*, whose Broadway credits include Tony winners Nine and A Chorus Line. Judith Roberts* (B’way: Present Laughter rev.) will appear as Desiree’s mother, Madame Armfeldt. Desiree’s lovers will include Rob Langeder* (Buddy US Tour) as Count Carl- Magnus Malcom, and RiChard Rowan* (Suessical Nat’l Tour) as Frederik Egerman. • INTO the WOODS Stephen Sondheim (Music and Lyrics) and James Lapine (Book) Directed by Susi Damilano Music Director: Dave Dobrusky Choreography: Kimberly Richards
Press Release For immediate release May 2014 [email protected] Download Hi Res photos here INTO THE WOODS Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book) Directed by Susi Damilano Music Director: Dave Dobrusky Choreography: Kimberly Richards June 24th to September 6th Previews June 24 – June 27 at 8pm Tuesdays through Thursdays at 7pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm Saturdays at 3pm and Sundays at 2pm (except 6/29) PRESS OPENING: Saturday, June 28th at 8pm San Francisco, CA (May 2014) – San Francisco Playhouse (Artistic Director Bill English & Producing Director Susi Damilano) concludes its provocative eleventh season with Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book). What happens after “happily ever after?” Fractured fairy tales of a darker hue provide the context for Into the Woods, which deconstructs the Brothers Grimm by way of “The Twilight Zone.” While the faces and names are familiar, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack in the Beanstalk and company inhabit a sylvan neighborhood in which witches and bakers are next-door neighbors, handsome princes from once-parallel fables are competitive (and equally vain) brothers, and all the stories intersect through unexpected new plot twists. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s beloved musical intertwines classic fairytales with a contemporary edge to tell stories of wishes granted and “the price” paid. Susi Damilano (Director), Dave Dobrusky (Music Director) and Kimberly Richards (Choreographer) will team up to bring a fresh twist to this familiar tale by adding a time-travelling boy, Ian DeVaynes to the Bay Area cast that features: Louis Parnell* (Narrator), Safiya Fredericks* (Witch), El Beh (Baker’s Wife), Keith Pinto* (Baker), Tim Homsley* (Jack), Joan Mankin* (Jack’s Mom), Monique Hafen* (Cinderella), Becka Fink (Cinderella’s Stepmom), identical twins, Lily and Michelle Drexler (Cinderella’s Stepsisters), Noelani Neal (Rapunzel), Corinne Proctor (Red), Ryan McCrary and Jeffrey Adams (Princes/Wolves) and John Paul Gonzales (Steward).

  • Developmental Cross Training Repertoire for Musical Theatre
Developmental Cross Training Repertoire for Musical Theatre Women The repertoire suggestions below target specific developmental goals. It is important to keep in mind however that the distinguishing characteristic of musical theatre singing is the variability of tonal resonance within any given song. A predominantly soprano song might suddenly launch into a belt moment. A chest dominant ballad may release into a tender soprano. Story always pre-empts musical choices. “Just You Wait” from My Fair Lady is part of the soprano canon but we would be disappointed if Eliza could not tell Henry Higgins what she really felt. In order to make things easier for beginning students, it’s a good idea to find repertoire with targeted range and consistent quality as students develop skill in coordinating registration. Soprano Mix—Beginner, Teens to Young Adult Examples of songs to help young sopranos begin to feel functionally confident and enthusiastic about characters and repertoire. • A Little Night Music Study Guide
Sacramento Theatre Company Study Guide The A Little Night Music Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Book by Hugh Wheeler Study Guide Materials Compiled by Anna Miles 1 Sacramento Theatre Company Mission Statement The Sacramento Theatre Company (STC) strives to be the leader in integrating professional theatre with theatre arts education. STC produces engaging professional theatre, provides exceptional theatre training, and uses theatre as a tool for educational engagement. Our History The theatre was originally formed as the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre in 1942, an ad hoc troupe formed to entertain locally-stationed troops during World War II. On October 18, 1949, the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre acquired a space of its own with the opening of the Eaglet Theatre, named in honor of the Eagle, a Gold Rush-era theatre built largely of canvas that had stood on the city’s riverfront in the 1850s. The Eaglet Theatre eventually became the Main Stage of the not- for-profit Sacramento Theatre Company, which evolved from a community theatre to professional theatre company in the 1980s. Now producing shows in three performance spaces, it is the oldest theatre company in Sacramento. After five decades of use, the Main Stage was renovated as part of the H Street Theatre Complex Project. Features now include an expanded and modernized lobby and a Cabaret Stage for special performances. The facility also added expanded dressing rooms, laundry capabilities, and other equipment allowing the transformation of these performance spaces, used nine months of the year by STC, into backstage and administration places for three months each summer to be used by California Musical Theatre for Music Circus.

The scenic design process entailed a series of private meetings, design meetings, independent research, and analysis that all culminated into a full scenic design package. The show itself has many locations that quickly transition into one another. It was my challenge as the designer to cohesively design the scenery so that it could be transitioned easily and in time with the music.
