INTRODUCTION In the Mediterranean Sea the genus Cantrainea Jeffreys, 1883, is represented only by Cantraineapeloritana (Cantraine, 1835), which was definitely confirmed to be a living species about a decade ago by Babbi (1982). The author in his interesting report com- ments on the taxonomic position of C. peloritana, giving data on some of its synonyms and reasonably guessing that this species could belong to the deep-sea coral bio- coenosis (Peres & Picard, 1964) present in the MediterraneanSea. According to Babbi (1982), C. peloritana, based on conchological characters only, shows two distinct morphs which in turn represent the two nominal species Turbo peloritanus (typical form) and Turbo carinatus (carinate form) originally created by Cantraine (1835) for fossil specimens. These two shell forms are both present in the Atlantic Ocean; on the con- trary, only the carinate form occurs in the Mediterranean Sea. Living specimens of C. peloritana from the Mediterranean Sea have been reported rarely, the first time by Jeffreys (1882), who published a small note about some molluscs dredged between Sar- dinia and Naples at a depth of 307 m, during the scientific expedition carried out by the V. -

Si bien la tendencia general de las capturas de abulón indica una disminución de las dos principales especies que la conforman (Haliotis fulgens y H corrugata), a partir de su máximo histórico en 1950, esta tendencia no ha sido uniforme ni entre especies ni entre las regiones de donde se extrae. -

McLEAN Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, Los Angeles, California 90007 Abstract. Two genera of minute turbinid gastropods in the subfamily Homalopomatinae, Moelleria Jeffreys, 1865, and Spiromoelleria gen. nov., are here called the Moelleria group. These genera differ from other homalopomatine genera in having a calcareous operculum with a multispiral pattern on its exterior surface, having the operculum unable to retract deeper than flush with the apertural margin, and lacking the apertural denticle of Homalopoma and related genera. Moelleria is monotypic for M. costulata (Moller, 1842), which has a circumboreal, offshore distribution. It has coalescing axial sculp ture of a kind unknown in other living trochacean genera. Spiral sculpture is characteristic of only two shallow-water North Pacific species in the new genus Spiromoelleria: S. quadrae (Dall, 1897), the type species, and S. kachemakensis spec. nov. Moelleria drusiana Dall, 1919, is synonymized with S. quadrae. Larval and early juvenile development was studied in Tegula eiseni (Jordan, 1936) for 63 days under laboratory conditions at temperatures of 20 ± 2°C in order to have a photographic sequence of the stages that help identify wild early juvenile specimens. Larvae were obtained by induced spawning. Postlarvae and juveniles were fed Nannochloropsis oculata and Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Elapsed time from fertilization to veliger was 2 days. All larvae settled by day 4. Development of the teleoconch began on day 12. Juveniles (570 ± 60 µm long) had a teleoconch with 11 longitudinal ribs on day 51. On days 58 through 63, the umbilicus and shell spiral provided juveniles with adult-like morphological characteristics (610 ± 60 µm long). We conclude that the identification of early juveniles of this and other associated gastropods coming from wild populations should be performed by selecting those specimens that -

A New Miocene Deep-Sea Chiton and Early Evidence for Teredinidae-Sustained Wood-Fall Communities
Palaeontologia Electronica palaeo-electronica.org A new Miocene deep-sea chiton and early evidence for Teredinidae-sustained wood-fall communities Luca Bertolaso, Vittorio Garilli, Daniela Parrinello, Maurizio Sosso, and Bruno Dell’Angelo ABSTRACT Deep-sea wood-falls are important biodiversity hot spots for insights on chemo- synthesis-based communities. The study of deep-sea wood-fall-related palaeocommu- nities from the Neogene of north Italy shed light on interesting associations from the Miocene of Torrente Cinghio (Tortonian) and of Moncasale di Casina (Langhian). The most common components of this association are typical chemosynthetic/wood-fall molluscs, such as the gastropods Homalopoma sp. and Pseudonina bellardii, the bivalves Idas sp. and shipworms, and the chiton Leptochiton lignatilis n. sp., which belongs to a genus typical of recent sunken woods in tropical waters. The new species described is compared with other fossil and recent congeners, especially with those sharing the same kind of tegmental sculpture, fully covered with randomly or quincun- cially arranged granules. An overview of the sunken wood-related chitons is provided. Surprisingly no taxa of the boring bivalves of the family Xylophagidae, whose species have been known to be fundamental for sustaining this kind of deep sea chemosyn- thetic ecosystem, were found in the studied site; however, other boring Teredinidae bivalves have been abundantly recovered. This suggests that, conversely to what has previously been observed on sunken wood communities, Teredinidae may be viewed as a counterpart for the maintenance of deep-sea wood-fall ecosystems.
