August/September 2013 Shalom tidings 4 EDITORIAL NOTE

once visited the town of Wuppertal, Germany. Accompanied by Sisters of the MSMI convent in Zolling, I went to visit the Wuppertal Schwebebahn, which is a suspension railway built above the Wupper River, to help ease the traffic congestion in the town. Such trains are only available in IGermany and Japan, so I was naturally excited to experience it.

After getting our tickets, we moved to the platform where a train was on the verge of leaving. My companions all rushed aboard. I, however, had been so transfixed by the size of the train tracks and the workings of the suspended wheels. The sound of the automatic closing doors startled me. I immediately thought to run onto the train. But all the doors were already closed and the train left for the next station. Then an old Christian song I had heard in my childhood came to mind: You who are asleep, like Jonah in the ship, How long will you sleep? The Lord may come now. The door of the grace is about to be closed. Brothers, if you rush, you can also enter.

I had gotten the ticket with the intention of getting on the train. I was very close to entering it, but I had lost my focus, and the doors closed before me. Friends, get into the train to Heavenly Zion! We are now living in a period of grace. Through Baptism, we were given the ticket to the Kingdom of God. But our journey to Zion got entangled with the trappings of the world. All who had been with me that day in Wuppertal had intended to travel by the train and achieved their goal. But, my eyes had wandered from my goal.

In this time of Grace, let us work with vigilance. Let us not forget our goals and priorities. May God grant us the grace for it. And before the closing of the door of Grace, we are called to help others to enter in also.

Let us pray, God, let us never ignore Your call to enter into Your Kingdom. Let your Holy Spirit teach us to get away from the vanities of the world and meditate on the eternal salvation of souls and Heaven. Jesus, the hope of my soul, save me.

Suffering melts our icy hearts and opens them to others who suffer: it develops humility and compassion. “Compassion” in Latin means to “suffer with,” and we cannot know another person in their pain unless we too have suffered with them. A woman philosopher, Alice von Hildebrand, once told an auditorium full of priests: “You men labor under the distinct disadvantage of never having had a baby.
