Septuagesima February 9, 2020

1 Welcome to Beautiful Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church! We hope that our service today strengthens your faith and guides your life in service to our Lord.

Beautiful Savior is called “evangelical” because we are dedicated to preaching the , the Word of God, in all of its truth and purity. We are Lutheran because we hold to the teachings of the Lutheran Confessions because they rightly explain the truth of God’s Word and reject false teaching.

Our Mission: To Know God’s Love, Beautiful Savior uses a form of the historic liturgy to guide our service because it proclaims the gospel and connects us to Christians of the past and around the world. Our entire service will be dedicated to teaching the truth of God’s love. Today’s order of service is Service of the Word on Page 38 of Christian worship.

To Show God’s Love, we continue to meet together, carry each other’s burdens, and encourage each other in Christian love.

To Share God’s Love, we welcome all guests and hope you learn something about what God has done for you today. If you have any questions about this service or about our congregation, feel free to ask one of our members or speak to Pastor Tembreull. If you are willing, please fill out a connection card and put it in the offering plate, you can also sign the guestbook at the back of church

Prayer before Worship: Lord God, our refuge and strength, when the restless powers of this world and the fury of Satan rise up against your holy city, watch over it and keep it safe. Be with us in every time of trouble and bring us to the new Jerusalem where you live and reign, one God, now and forever.

Hymn CW 463 Jesus Calls Us O’er the Tumult

L: The grace of our Lord  Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you.

Confession of Sins

L: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy.

C: Merciful Father in Heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

L: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. You are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will. C: Amen.

L: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

Prayer of the Day L: Let us pray. O Lord, in your favor hear the prayers of your people that we, who would be justly punished for our offenses, may be mercifully delivered by your goodness and for the glory of your name; through Jesus Christ, your Son, Our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

First Lesson Jeremiah 1:4-10 4The word of the LORD came to me. 5Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I set you apart. I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations. 4 6But I said, “Ah, LORD God! I really do not know how to speak! I am only a child!” 7The LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ You go to everyone to whom I send you and say whatever I command you. 8Do not be afraid of them, because I am with you, and I will rescue you, declares the LORD.” 9Then the LORD stretched out his hand and touched my mouth. The LORD said to me: There! I have now placed my words in your mouth. 10Look, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and to tear down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.

Second Lesson1 Corinthians 9:24-10:5 24Do you not know that when runners compete in the stadium, they all run, but only one receives the prize? Run like that—to win. 25Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable victor’s wreath, but we do it for an imperishable one. 26That is why there is nothing aimless about the way I run. There is no pummeling of the air in the way I box. 27Instead I hit my body hard and make it my slave so that, after preaching to others, I myself will not be rejected. 10:1For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, 2and they were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3They all ate the same spiritual food 4and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them—and that rock was Christ! 5Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them. He had them die in the wilderness. 5

Verse of the Day L: . Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life.” Alleluia (John 6:68)

Gospel Reading: Matthew 20:1-16 “Indeed the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2After agreeing to pay the workers a denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3He also went out about the third hour and saw others standing unemployed in the marketplace. 4To these he said, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is right.’ So they went. 5Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour and did the same thing. 6When he went out about the eleventh hour, he found others standing unemployed. He said to them, ‘Why have you stood here all day unemployed?’ 7“They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ “He told them, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’ 8When it was evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 6 ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last group and ending with the first.’ 9“When those who were hired around the eleventh hour came, they each received a denarius. 10When those who were hired first came, they thought they would receive more. But they each received a denarius too. 11After they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner: 12‘Those who were last worked one hour, and you made them equal to us who have endured the burden of the day and the scorching heat!’ 13“But he answered one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not make an agreement with me for a denarius? 14Take what is yours and go. I want to give to the last one hired the same as I also gave to you. 15Can’t I do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ 16In the same way, the last will be first, and the first, last.”

L: This is the Gospel of the Lord!

Hymn CW 390 Salvation Unto Us Has Come

Sermon Text Matthew 20:1-16 He is Generous

7 Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of Heaven and Earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Offering Guests do not need to feel obligated to give an offering; you are our guest and we are happy to share the gospel with you. Please do use this time to fill out a Connection Card and place it in the offering plate. Anyone who wants to request a special prayer can also place one of the green cards in the plate so that the congregation may join their hearts in praying for your need.

Prayer of the Church Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Brief silence

For the Holy Church, that all who have been called into the vineyard of the Lord would recognize their unworthiness for such a gracious gift, rejoice in the salvation they have in Christ, and remain steadfast in the Word, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. 8 For all pastors in Christ, that they would gladly preach the saving Gospel to all, not counting the cost, and not for their own glory or the praise of men, but for Christ’s glory alone; for all other church workers, that all they do would be in service to this same saving Gospel; and for an increase in these vocations, that the Lord of the harvest would use His laborers as His blessed instruments in bringing sinners into the vineyard of His redemption and love, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For our congregation, that we would love one another as Christ has loved us, give generously to support the ministry here and abroad, pray for our enemies, put away all earthly grumbling, and bask in the gracious provisions our Lord lavishly bestows on us, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the nations of the world, that justice, peace and the common good of all would be the goal of all those in, and under, authority, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all those suffering or recovering from illness; for those who are sad and sorrowful; for those suffering from broken relationships or financial distress; for those to whom death draws near; and for those who are grieving, that Christ would be their health in sickness, their joy in sorrow and their life in death, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For those who come to the table of our Lord this day, that they would receive the very body and blood of Jesus in repentance and faith, and to their abundant blessing, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the faithful who have gone before us and enjoy heavenly bliss, let us give thanks and praise. That we may be brought to share with them the feast of joy that never ends in the eternal vineyard of our Lord, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

9 Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Hymn CW 468 My God, My Father, Make Me Strong Closing Prayer and Blessing L: O Lord God, our heavenly Father, pour out the Holy Spirit on Your faithful people. Keep us strong in Your grace and truth, protect and comfort us in all temptation, and bestow on us Your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Blessing L: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The LORD look on you with favor and  give you peace.

Closing Hymn 401 Your Works Not Mine, O Christ 10 Announcements Bible Study will continue next at 9 AM. We have started a new study Male and Female in God’s World.
