The Prevention Specialist This is a regular full-time position for a Prevention Specialist to coordinate community-wide activities to reduce risk factors and increase protective factors to prevent substance abuse, suicide, and problem gambling. Duties will include mental health promotion, public information and education, technical assistance for community drug-free events & coalitions, environmental and social policy support, substance abuse identification and referral services, performing technical and professional-level health promotion functions including data collection & analysis; developing quality improvement strategies on performance management issues; preparing reports & printed materials; developing policies; designing, organizing, implementing, and providing advice on, and evaluation of, the effect of health promotion programs and strategies designed to support and modify health related behaviors of individuals, families, organizations, and communities. Please see attached job description for full details. The Benefits Health coverage - Group medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage is available for the entire family. For the 2020- 2021 plan year, the County will pay 98% of the monthly premium and employees will pay 2% ($34.89 per month) for the Base Plan. With this plan, employees are eligible for a $100 a month contribution into an HRA VEBA account. Buy-up plans are also available. Retirement - PERS (Public Employee Retirement System) contribution is 100% employer funded, which includes both contribution to PERS pension and IAP accounts (IAP contribution is 6% of salary). Short-Term Disability – 100% County paid. Life insurance - $10,000 for employee/$2,000 for spouse and children – 100% County Paid. Vacation/Sick Leave - Flexible Earned Time (FET) is a combination of vacation and sick leave. To start, employees earn 13 hours per month and future accruals increase based on years of service. After a year of service and depending on FET balance, employees may sell-back up to 40 hours of FET per year. YAMHILL COUNTY - Management Analyst - Prevention Specialist The Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in health education or related field is required in addition to two years’ experience in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention work. A master’s degree in public health or related field is preferred. Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) is required within two years of hire. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience or academic preparation in public health programs, problem gambling prevention, and to those who are bilingual/bi-cultural (English/Spanish) with proficiency in interpreting and translating. Must have a valid license to drive in the State of Oregon in addition to a good driving record. The Candidate The successful candidate will be self-directed, detail-oriented, and possess the ability to work in a team environment and to interact with co-workers and the public in a courteous, professional manner, The position requires excellent skills in leadership, community outreach and engagement, health promotion, and program planning, implementation, and evaluation, and proficiency in computer use including Microsoft Office Suite, Publisher, PowerPoint, or equivalent and basic office software. Skills in social marketing, grant writing, and administration are desired. CHES or MCHES is preferred. Management Analyst – Prevention Specialist • Organizes and otherwise facilitates community meetings as related to program area including, but not limited to, setting agendas, taking meeting minutes, scheduling meeting sites, and other steps necessary to facilitate community collaborations. • Procures, organizes, and creates public access to educational materials. • Maintains program information on department website. • Assists with special health awareness and community-wide prevention projects such as tobacco reduction, immunization promotion, and emergency preparedness. • Arranges and coordinates community involvement efforts related to the program health topic. • Prepares evaluations of program activities as required. • Conducts initial and on-going assessment activities. • Analyzes data related to county-wide health issues and populations. • Communicates regularly with Public Health manager and co-workers. • Writes grant applications as appropriate to the position. • Other activities as assigned. In this study, we wanted to explore how past experiences, more specifically taking a deeper look into how curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate level prepare music faculty for college teaching positions. In this study we conducted one interview with a Pacific University music department faculty. From the interview there were five themes that popped out as to some past experiences that have shaped Dr. Scott Tuomi: learning from life experiences, change in life trajectory, learning about the world outside of music, extra preparation to attain better musicianship and beneficial courses in the curriculum.
