The site is triangular, bordered by Montague Expressway to the west and Trade Zone Blvd. to the south. Currently, the site is an office complex, with a vegetated berm along the western and southern boundaries. The three buildings are centrally located with peripheral parking and landscaping throughout. The plan proposes to construct 92 attached town homes and 42 single-family homes, for a total of 134 homes. HortScience, Inc. was asked to prepare an Arborist Report for the site. This report provides the following information: 1. An evaluation of the health and structural condition of all trees growing within and adjacent to the project area based on a visual inspection of external conditions. 2. An assessment of the impacts of constructing the proposed project on the trees. 3. Guidelines for tree preservation during the design, construction and maintenance phases of development. -

Box 953, Walvis Bay, Namibia (E-mail: [email protected]) Key words: Episodic events, Long-term ecological research, Namibia, Population dynamics, Seasonality, Sex ratio Abstract Over the past 14 years, long-term ecological research (LTER) was conducted on the desert perennial, Welwitschia mirabilis (Gnetales: Welwitschiaceae), located in the Welwitschia Wash near Gobabeb in the Central Namib Desert. We measured leaf growth of 21 plants on a monthly basis and compared this with climatic data. The population structure as well as its spatial distribution was determined for 110 individuals. Growth rate was 0.37 mm day−1, but varied 22-fold within individuals, fluctuating seasonally and varying between years. Seasonal patterns were correlated with air humidity, while annual differences were affected by rainfall. During three years, growth rate quadrupled following episodic rainfall events >11 mm during mid-summer. One natural recruitment event followed a 13-mm rainfall at the end of summer. Fog did not appear to influence growth patterns and germination. Plant loca- tion affected growth rate; plants growing on the low banks, or ledges, of the main drainage channel grew at a higher rate, responded better and longer to rainfall and had relatively larger leaves than plants in the main channel or its tributaries. -

These red saps and resins are derived from a number of disparate taxa. Despite its wide uses, little research has been done to know about its true source, quality control and clinical applications. In this review, we have tried to overview different sources of Dragon’s blood, its source wise chemical constituents and therapeutic uses. Results Although the diversity of gymnosperms decreases at equatorial lati- tudes, approximately 50% of the extant species occur primarily between the tropics. More than 43% of gymnosperms can occur at very low elevations (≤ 200 m a.s.l.). -

Stevenson7, Philip Thomas5 & Sven Buerki3,12 Driven by limited resources and a sense of urgency, the prioritization of species for conservation has Received: 12 May 2017 been a persistent concern in conservation science. Gymnosperms (comprising ginkgo, conifers, cycads, and gnetophytes) are one of the most threatened groups of living organisms, with 40% of the species Accepted: 28 March 2018 at high risk of extinction, about twice as many as the most recent estimates for all plants (i.e. 21.4%). Published: xx xx xxxx This high proportion of species facing extinction highlights the urgent action required to secure their future through an objective prioritization approach. The Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) method rapidly ranks species based on their evolutionary distinctiveness and the extinction risks they face. EDGE is applied to gymnosperms using a phylogenetic tree comprising DNA sequence data for 85% of gymnosperm species (923 out of 1090 species), to which the 167 missing species were added, and IUCN Red List assessments available for 92% of species. The efect of diferent extinction probability transformations and the handling of IUCN data defcient species on the resulting rankings is investigated. Prescriptions in regular use for the treatment of a particular set of symptoms constituted the bulk of the formulae. Time could be saved by merely writing the name of the mixture or pills, etc., required and a supply for stock could be prepared beforehand.... As early as 1730 St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, had its own printed pharmacopoeia, and, as newly established hospitals adopted their own routines for the dispensing of the medicines ordered for their patients, so the number of hospital pharmacopoeias increased'.' At the General Infirmary at Leeds the earliest pharmacopoeia to be discovered is that of 1863. It is hand-written and the calligraphy throughout is the same but additional entries, presumably later, are in a different hand. There are marginal initialed notes which were written by T.C.A., C.G.W., J.D.H., C.B. and another which is undecipherable. The initials must be those of Thomas Clifford Allbutt,* Claudius Galen Wheelhouse** and John Deakin Heaton***. C.B. has not been identified and was certainly not on the honorary staff of the Infirmary. The marginal notes must have been made between 1864, the year of publication of the first British Pharmacopoeia and of the appointments of Allbutt and Wheelhouse to the staff of the Infirmary, and 1880 when Heaton died. In the Infirmary pharmacopoeia of 1863 there are three Aquae or medicated waters: Aqua Menthol Pip. -

Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is a specialised mode of photosynthesis that improves atmospheric CO2 assimilation in water-limited terrestrial and epiphytic habitats and in CO2-limited aquatic environments. In contrast with C3 and C4 plants, CAM plants take up CO2 from the atmosphere partially or predominantly at night. CAM is taxonomically widespread among vascular plants andis present inmanysucculent species that occupy semiarid regions, as well as intropical epiphytes and in some aquatic macrophytes. This water-conserving photosynthetic pathway has evolved multiple times and is found in close to 6% of vascular plant species from at least 35 families. Although many aspects of CAM molecular biology, biochemistry and ecophysiology are well understood, relatively little is known about the evolutionary origins of CAM. This review focuses on five main topics: (1) the permutations and plasticity of CAM, (2) the requirements for CAM evolution, (3) the drivers of CAM evolution, (4) the prevalence and taxonomic distribution of CAM among vascular plants with emphasis on the Orchidaceae and (5) the molecular underpinnings of CAM evolution including circadian clock regulation of gene expression.
