He has worked with lyricist Bernie Taupin as his songwriting partner since 1967 and they have collaborated on more than 30 albums. Elton John has sold more than 300 million records, making him one of the best-selling music artists in the world. He has more than fifty Top 40 hits, including seven consecutive #1 albums in the U.S.A., 58 Billboard Top 40 singles, and 27 Top 10, including nine which reached #1. Candle in the Wind, re-written in 1997 and dedicated to Princess Diana, sold over 33 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling single in the history of the U.K. and U.S.A. singles charts. In 1969, his debut album, Empty Sky, was released. Elton John has also achieved success in musical theatre, composing the music for The Lion King, Aida, and Billy Elliot. He has received five Grammy Awards, five Brit Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Tony Award, and the Kennedy Center Honors. Elton John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for "services to music and charitable services" in 1998 and has performed at a number of royal events such as the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997 and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert in 2012. In early 2018, Elton John announced that he was retiring from touring. His three-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour began in September and will consist of over 300 shows on five continents.     Singing in ‘The Peg’: The Dynamics of Winnipeg Singing Cultures During the 20th Century Muriel Louise Smith Doctor of Philosophy University of York Music September 2015 This thesis is dedicated to my parents, William Moore (1910-1982) Ann Moore (1916-2011) who inspired, demanded excellence, and loved me. 2 Abstract The research begins by establishing Winnipeg, as a city comprised of many different European immigrant communities where the dominant British-Canadian culture reflected the Canadian national consciousness of the early 20th century. After an outline of early musical life in the city, four case studies demonstrate how the solo vocal and choral culture in Winnipeg represents a realization of the constitutive, continuously forming and mutable relationships between peoples of differing identities. In all of these case studies, I investigate how this culture has been shaped by social and political actions through transnational connections over the 20th century. The first two case studies are underpinned by the theories of cultural capital and gender. The first focuses on the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg (1900-1920s), an elite group of Brito-Canadian women who shaped the reception of high art singing among their peers primarily through their American connections. The second investigates the Men’s Musical Club of Winnipeg (1920s-1950s), a dynamic group of businessmen and musicians who sought to reinforce Brito-Canadian cultural supremacy by developing a choral culture and establishing a music competition festival based on British models and enforced by British musical associations. The third and fourth case studies are examined through the lens of diaspora and identity, underpinned by social capital.

    English Music Elton John Part 2 In 1967, John answered an ad for a songwriter for Liberty Records. He got the job and soon teamed up with lyricist Bernie Taupin. The duo switched to the DJM label the following year, writing songs for other artists. John got his first break as a singer with his 1969 album Empty Sky, featuring songs by John and Taupin. While that recording failed to catch on, his 1970 self-titled effort featured John’s first hit “Your Song.” More hits soon followed, including such number- one smashes as “Crocodile Rock,” “Bennie and the Jets” and “Island Girl.” John enjoyed a series of top-selling albums during this time, including Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973) and Rock of the Westies (1975). As one of the top acts of the 1970s, Elton John became equally famous for his live shows. He dressed in fabulous, over-the-top costumes and glasses for his elaborate concerts.
