M M I S S I O N JEFFERSON COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION NEWS 2001 The second phase of the Cultural Resource Survey is underway. The field work will be prioritized so that the remaining mountain areas – Evergreen, North Mountain and Deer Creek/South Turkey Creek – are completed first. The funding is a cooperative effort with the County Colorado Historical Commissioners providing special funds, and the JCHC SCIENTIFIC & CULTURAL Society — State FACILITIES DIST R I C T Historical Fund acquiring grant money through the Colorado Historical Fund and the Scientific and Cultural Finance District. All members of the commission were provided copies of the first phase and were asked to review and provide feedback to Cathleen Norman. The membership on the commission continues to change. Members Delbert Bishop, Kris Christensen, Scott Pierson and Kevin Rucker submitted their resignations during the year. Each one contributed greatly with guidance to our work of our commission. Kris and Kevin influenced the commission with their enthusiasm and experience with the State Historical Society and other historic preservation organizations. Charter member Jane Gardner and longtime member Ruth Richardson also retired from the commission. All these people will be missed. In May, five new members came on board,Tommy Raye and John Jenkins from the Golden area; Charles Hanson from Lakewood;Tim Montgomery from Arvada; and Joyce Weedon from South Jeffco. All these new appointees come with experience and great interest in preserving and providing the effort to accomplish the work of the commission. Different museums and historical societies continue to provide the monthly displays in the atrium of the Government Center, thanks to the efforts of the Education Committee. This committee also has made contacts with numerous writing groups and the teachers in Jefferson County R-1 schools to promote the Writers Award Contest. This resulted in a record number of entries in the youth category. The winning articles appear in this issue of HISTORICALLY JEFFCO. The Historic Preservation Committee has been extremely involved this year coordinating the contract and work for the second phase of the Cultural Resource Survey that began in August. The committee has worked diligently with various departments to provide options for Certified Local Government status to preserve historic sites in the county. Members of this committee continue to provide input to the County Planning Department on developments in the County and their historic merit. Commission members continue to serve as liaisons to their local historical societies. Max Haug has attended meetings of Rocky Flats Historical Group, and Tommy Raye and Carole Lomond attended the meetings of Lariat Loop partners, keeping the JCHC aware of historical activities throughout the county. • Presidents and Speakers of the Colorado General Assembly
PRESIDENTS AND SPEAKERS OF THE COLORADO GENERAL ASSEMBLY A Biographical Portrait from 1876 Denver, Colorado 2016 Edition INTRODUCTION The Presidents and Speakers in this book are listed in chronological order by the years they held the office of President and/or Speaker. The President's term is four years and the Speaker's term is two years. Some of the Presidents and Speakers did not serve full terms, while others served more than one term. The first legislative session met from November 1, 1876, through March 20, 1877, and the succeeding sessions met every two years in the odd numbered years: 1879, 1881, 1883, etc., until 1950. Even though the Colorado General Assembly started to convene annually in 1950, the dates for the terms of office for both the President and Speaker begin on an odd-numbered year. Constitutional conventions and the transformation to statehood. As early as April of 1859, pioneers who had traveled to Cherry Creek in search of gold petitioned the United States Congress to create a territory for the area that would become Colorado. After a failed attempt to create the Territory of Jefferson, settlers in the gold fields remained under the jurisdiction of the Kansas Territory from 1859 to 1861. On February 26, 1861, Congress passed an organic act that established the Territory of Colorado. The new territory was constituted mainly from the western portion of the Kansas Territory, as well as smaller segments of the Nebraska, Utah, and New Mexico territories. During the next 15 years, from 1861 to 1876, citizens of the Colorado Territory made three attempts to attain statehood, in 1864, 1865, and 1876.

! Volume'16,'Number'2' Denver,'Colorado' April,'May,'June'2015' ' ! Irish Parish Registers Records Are Digitized, Going Online National Library and Catholic Church Combine to Give Joy to Researchers —-Zoe von Ende Lappin ! Good news for researchers working in Ireland: All Roman Catholic parish records in custody of the National Library in Dublin are being digitized and will be online this summer. They will be accessible free at a dedicated website on your home computer, and the URL will be announced as the launch date nears. The Catholic Church in Ireland and the library, at times overwhelmed by family historians – mostly Americans – trying to trace their families have agreed that digitizing was the best route. What’s more, the microfilms had become so worn that they were in danger of becoming useless. The registers cover 1,091 parishes starting as early as 1740, though many begin much later or are incomplete, and end in the 1880s. They record mostly baptisms and marriages with a few deaths. Baptisms name the child and his or her parents, sometimes including the mother’s maiden name, and usually the sponsors (godparents). Marriages name the bride and groom, sometimes identify the parents and usually name the witnesses. Later parish records are supplemented by civil registration of births, marriages and deaths starting in 1864 for Catholics. Until now, the only online access has been though a paid site, www.rootsIreland.ie, though researchers could use the microfilm without charge at the National Library or at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City (and branches), which owns microfilm of about 30 percent of the Irish RC parish registers.

THE COLORADO MAGAZINE Published bi-monthly by The State H istorica l Soci ety of Col or ado Vol. XXll l Denv er, Colorado, M ay , 1946 No. 2 The Governors of Colorado-Their Ancestries and Interests QcAKTRILLE D. McCLUNG '~ To date Colorado bas had thirty-three governors serving both the Territory ancl the State. Onr first to hold office was Robert W . Steele who was elected to head the locally formed Provisional Ter ritory of Jefferson in 1859. When in 1861 Colorado Territory came into existence by an act of Congress, Governor Steele gave place to Governor Gilpin, who had been appointed by President Lincoln. From then until Colorado became a state in 1876 the office was appointive. John Long Routt, who was the last of the appointees, became the first of those to be elected by the citizens in 1876. In the table on page 99 is given a list of Colorado's governors, their places of birth, etc. The problem of 'rnrking out the geJJealogies of our governors by means of the materials in the Denver Public Library and the State Historical Society has been an interesting one. Correspond ence has been resorted to as well, but in some cases only the most meagre information could be secured. The results present the typical picture of the family streams that pour into a pioneer community such as ours was, even in the memory of persons now living. Ocldly enough, none of the men 1Yho held the highest office in the gift of the state were in any way related to the earlier groups of settlers who entered the area.

Some have arrived at Old Colorado City, southwest of Colorado Springs; some came by way of the Arkansas River, arriving at Fountain City, now part of Pueblo; some arrived in what is now Denver; some arrived far north of Denver, having followed the South Platte River. Many were walking or guiding slow- moving animals. The view to the south from downtown Denver, on a clear day, reveals the magnificent peak, but it is 70 miles away. From Pueblo County, the view northward is nearly as distant, both very impressive walks from Denver, with or without teams of animals.
