Friday April 24th, Barcelona – CIMAM, the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art calls its members to share best practices and to generate exchange and debate on the role of museums in our rapidly evolving present. In light of the closure of museums due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, CIMAM wishes to call attention to the exceptional work being carried out by our museums and peer institutions around the world at this critical time, as part of CIMAM's commitment to provide a platform for the global discussion among over 600 museum professionals and to stay connected in solidarity. CIMAM members are asked to nominate practices in their own museum or in others, whether large or small, and in diverse contexts, that are innovative and exemplary in their response to the current situation to ensure a continued and inclusive access to culture. This initiative is an evolution of the Outstanding Museum Practice Award to provide visibility and generate a reference of the best practices carried out during this unprecedented global crisis that represents a real challenge for many institutions in the art world. Nominations including the name of the museum or institution, a brief description of the practice or project, and weblink should be sent to [email protected]. Nominated practices will be shared on the CIMAM website during the upcoming months. The Outstanding Museum Practice Award launched in November 2019 is postponed until 2021. More impor- tantly, the artist himself favored a formalist interpretation since the late 1930s, which has all but precluded historical approaches to his work except for a few notable exceptions.2 The critic Cesare Brandi, who inaugurated the formalist discourse on Morandi, wrote in 1939 that “nothing is less abstract, less uproot- ed from the world, less indifferent to pain, less deaf to joy than this painting, which apparently retreats to the margins of life and interests itself, withdrawn, in dusty kitchen cupboards.”3 In order to further remove Morandi from the 1.

And not only for its arrival, like clockwork, every 730 days (every other August) as the rolling index of curatorial (much more than material, social or spatial) instincts within the world of architecture. The biennale’s importance today lies in its vital dual presence as both register and infrastructure, recording the impulses that guide not only architec- ture but also the increasingly international audienc- es created by (and so often today, nearly subservient to) contemporary architectures of display. As the title of this elegant book suggests, ‘architecture on display’ is indeed the larger cultural condition serving as context for the popular success and 30- year evolution of this remarkable event. To look past its most prosaic features as an architectural gathering measured by crowd size and exhibitor prowess, the biennale has become something much more than merely a regularly scheduled (if at times unpredictably organised) survey of architectural experimentation: it is now the key global embodiment of the curatorial bias of not only contemporary culture but also architectural life, or at least of how we imagine, represent and display that life.

All around me, long strips of white canvas stretch into the distance, suspended above the grass; the wind plays them like strings, making them howl and snap. They are precisely at the level of my neck, and their edges appear razor-sharp. Walking through Keisuke Matsuura’s brilliantly simple Resonance, with its multiple slacklines stretched across two small rises, is like going through a dangerous portal, or navigating a set of laser-beams. To get there, we drive through an industrial estate in the middle of grey flatlands. Steam billows from a chimney nearby, and a massive hardware store flanks the Biennale’s terrain, which consists of manicured green lawns dotted with several buildings, and intercut by a road or two. Rather than ruining the experience, the encroaching elements of daily life make for a compelling, unpretentious backdrop to the art on display. Matsuura’s work is typical of this Biennale, where things that appear simple, even mundane, suddenly swallow you up in an intense encounter. Even the main building, Denmark’s HEART museum, is a surprise. At first glance it appears to be an unobtrusive, white-walled specimen of Scandi minimalism, but when I happen to look up, I see a beautifully menacing ceiling whose folds and texture resemble parchment or flesh.

    THE BMA DIVERSIFIES ITS COLLECTION, STRENGTHENING ITS HOLDINGS TO ENHANCE VISITOR EXPERIENCE Recent Acquisitions and Deaccessioning Repetitive Works Redefine the Museum’s Contemporary Art Collection BALTIMORE, MD (April 13, 2018) —The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) announced today that its Board of Trustees has approved plans to deaccession seven works from its contemporary collection, following an extensive analysis of the museum’s holdings in this area. The funds raised will be used exclusively for the acquisition of works created from 1943 or later, allowing the museum to strengthen and fill gaps within its collection. During the same meeting, the trustees approved the acquisition of nine works by contemporary artists Mark Bradford, Zanele Muholi, Trevor Paglen, John T. Scott, Sara VanDerBeek, and Jack Whitten, several of which are the first by the artist to enter the collection. The BMA regularly reviews its holdings to ensure that it is serving its mission and its community through its collections and exhibitions. Following this careful examination of the collection, BMA Dorothy Wagner Wallis Director Christopher Bedford and the BMA’s curatorial staff discovered areas of repetition among its holdings, identifying the seven works that will be sold at auction or through private sale, following approval from the board and accessions committee. In each case, the museum currently holds stronger works by the same artist, and in some cases, more significant versions from the same series or stage of the artist’s career. The BMA has entered into an agreement with Sotheby’s to offer the works beginning in May. “The BMA, like any civic museum, must undergo a continuous process of reviewing its collection and identifying areas for growth and refinement with the goal of building a collection that is more relevant to the community it serves,” said Christopher Bedford.

The Johns Creek Tunnel is a pedestrian underpass beneath Medlock Bridge Rd./SR 141, just south of McGinnis Ferry Rd. The Process: “When new Tourism Product Development funds became available in July of 2016, general improvements to the underpass was one of the recommendations JCCVB made to City Council for partial use of these funds, which were combined with further investment from the JCCVB Board of Directors for the tourism project,” says Shelby Marzen, JCCVB Executive Director. “This tunnel is located walking distance to both hotels in Johns Creek and connects business and leisure visitors to nearby restaurants and shops.

The term was originally used for the Venice International Art Exhibition, first held in 1895. Today, it commonly refers to the many large scale international contemporary art exhibitions held in various cities around the world. Biennales feature contemporary art by artists from various countries that are usually linked by a common curatorial theme, providing a framework for exploring contemporary social, economic and political ideas in an international context. With so many different artists involved, audiences are able to experience and engage with a wide variety of contemporary art practices to come to their own unique understanding of the curatorial theme. A biennale is different to a regular exhibition because of its large scale and use of multiple venues. It is also different to an art fair because the artworks are not for sale. THE BEGINNING In 1893, the Mayor of Venice, Riccardo Selvatico, proposed a major art exhibition to coincide with the silver wedding anniversary of Italy’s King Umberto and Queen Margherita.
