Fire Along the Transition Between the Amazon Forest and the Cerrado Ecosystems1 Gustavo Hees de Negreiros23, David Sandberg4, Ernesto Alvarado5, Thomas Hinckley4, Daniel C. Nepstad6, and Marcos Pereira7 ABSTRACT Most of the fires in Amazonia happen along an arc of deforestation, which generally follows the transition between the Amazon evergreen forests and the savannas (cerrado). The evergreen primary forest acts as a giant fire break, while the cerrado has adapted to frequent fires. The transitional zone between these two ecosystems is a fragile boundary controlled by very dynamic ecosystem processes. It is also an area with heavy pressures from human settlements that use fire as a way to clear and manage the land. Canopy disturbance of the primary forest due to increased selective logging and deforestation, along with extended droughts, alters the hydrological equilibrium of this ecosystem and therefore, the ecotone. High temperatures and very low relative humidity in disturbed stands increase the flammability of the primary forest. The deep rooting systems have an important role in supplying water during the dry season. As precipitation decreases, the primary forest is able to tap deep soil water; however, if the water supply is interrupted during an exceptionally dry year, the vegetation can dry and suffer leaf loss. Light penetration then increases, fuel moisture decreases, and fuels become dangerously flammable. This paper presents the main ideas of a fire susceptibility model that is being developed for the region. Qualitative treatment of the major element composition demonstrates the dominance of carbonate and evaporite dissolution. Most samples are supersaturated with respect to calcite, 87 86 dolomite, and atmospheric CO2 with moderate (0.710–0.715) Sr/ Sr ratios, while six out of 21 total samples have especially high concentrations of Na, Ca, Mg, Cl, and SO4 from weathering of evaporites. We used inversion model calculations to apportion the total dissolved cations to rain-, evaporite-, carbonate-, and silicate-origin. The samples are either carbonate- or evaporite-dominated, but the relative contributions of the ϫ 3 four sources vary widely among samples. -

Country Report for the Preparation of the First Report on the State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources Report on Domestic Animal Genetic Resources in China June 2003 Beijing CONTENTS Executive Summary Biological diversity is the basis for the existence and development of human society and has aroused the increasing great attention of international society. In June 1992, more than 150 countries including China had jointly signed the "Pact of Biological Diversity". Domestic animal genetic resources are an important component of biological diversity, precious resources formed through long-term evolution, and also the closest and most direct part of relation with human beings. Therefore, in order to realize a sustainable, stable and high-efficient animal production, it is of great significance to meet even higher demand for animal and poultry product varieties and quality by human society, strengthen conservation, and effective, rational and sustainable utilization of animal and poultry genetic resources. The "Report on Domestic Animal Genetic Resources in China" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report") was compiled in accordance with the requirements of the "World Status of Animal Genetic Resource " compiled by the FAO. The Ministry of Agriculture" (MOA) has attached great importance to the compilation of the Report, organized nearly 20 experts from administrative, technical extension, research institutes and universities to participate in the compilation team. In 1999, the first meeting of the compilation staff members had been held in the National Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Service, discussed on the compilation outline and division of labor in the Report compilation, and smoothly fulfilled the tasks to each of the compilers. -

In these countries and to a certain extent in some least developed countries there is a substantial interest to develop new IBWTs. IBWTs are being applied or developed not only for irrigated agriculture and hydropower, but also for municipal and industrial water supply, flood management, flow augmentation (increasing flow within a certain river reach or canal for a certain purpose), and in a few cases for navigation, mining, recreation, drainage, wildlife, pollution control, log transport, or estuary improvement. Debates on the pros and cons of such transfers are on going at National and International level. New ideas and concepts on the viabilities and constraints of IBWTs are being presented and deliberated in various fora. In light of this the Central Office of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) has attempted a compilation covering the existing and proposed IBWT schemes all over the world, to the extent of data availability. The first version of the compilation was presented on the occasion of the 54th International Executive Council Meeting of ICID in Montpellier, France, 14 - 19 September 2003. -

Conducting quantitative assessments of ecological security at the watershed scale is important for enhancing the water quality of river basins and promoting environmental management. In this study, China’s Songhua River Basin was divided into 204 assessment units by combining watershed and administrative boundaries. Ten human threat factors were identified based on their significant influence on the river ecosystem. A modified ecological threat index was used to synthetically evaluate the ecological security, where frequency was weighted by flow length from the grids to the main rivers, while severity was weighted by the potential hazard of the factors on variables of river ecosystem integrity. The results showed that individual factors related to urbanization, agricultural development and facility construction presented different spatial distribution characteristics. At the center of the plain area, the provincial capital cities posed the highest level of threat, as did the municipal districts of prefecture-level cities. -
