The Story of the Nativity of the Lord Nativity of The Lord On this day, the Church focuses especially on the newborn Child, God become human, who embodies for us all Holy Day of Obligation! the hope and peace we seek. We need no other special saint today to lead us to Christ in the manger, although his mother Mary and Joseph, caring for his foster-son, help round out the scene. But if we were to select a patron for monday, December 24 today, perhaps it might be appropriate for us to imagine an anonymous shepherd, summoned to the birthplace Vigil Children's Mass at 4:00 PM by a wondrous and even disturbing vision in the night, a summons from an angelic choir, promising peace and & 7:00 PM - English goodwill. A shepherd willing to seek out something that might just be too unbelievable to chase after, and yet compelling enough to leave behind the flocks in the field and search for a mystery. TUesday, December 25 Midnight Mass at 12:00 AM - English On the day of the Lord’s birth, let’s let an unnamed, “non-celebrity” at the edge of the crowd model for us the way to discover Christ in our own hearts—somewhere between skepticism and wonder, between mystery and faith. And Mass at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM - English like Mary and the shepherds, let’s treasure that discovery in our hearts. • Two Answers to the Challenge of Jesus
TWO ANSWERS TO THE CHALLENGE OF JESUS. HV w i i.i.i am WEBER. i < Continued) T1IF Cleansing of the Temple has a double aspect It was, on the one hand, an attack upon the chief priests and their allies, the scribes. On the other hand, it was a bold stroke for the re- ligions liberty of the people. From both sides there must have come an answer. His enemies could not simply ignore what happened. Unless they were ready to accept the Galilean as their master, they were compelled to think of ways and means by which to defeat him. At the same time, his friends and admirers would discuss his valiant deed and formulate certain conclusions as to his character and authority, the more so as the chief priests themselves had first broached that question in public. Thus we may expect a twofold answer to the challenge of Jesus provided the Gospels have pre-erved a complete account. The story of the Cleansing of the Temple is not continued at once. It is followed in all four Gospels by a rather copious collec- tion of sayings of Jesus. Especially the Synoptists represent him as teaching in the temple as well as on his way to and from that sanc- tuary. Those teachings consist of three groups. The first com- prises parables and sayings which are found in one Gospel only. The second contains discourses vouched tor by two oi the Gospels. The third belongs to all three. The first two groups may be put aside without any further examination because they do not form part of the common Synoptic source.

Commentaries on the Gospel of Mark are eager to point out the unique quality of this particular miracle story. It is noted by Eugene Boring, Robert Guelich, William Lane, and Bas M.F. Van Iersel— authors of the four single volume commentaries with which we will initially engage—that “The Healing of the Gerasene Demoniac” breaks the traditional form of an exorcism story in both its length and detail.1 It is also the single longest episode in Mark’s Gospel.

  • The Story of Jesus and Legion
Bible Story Discussion THE STORY OF JESUS AND LEGION Jesus is the ruler over all things. In this story, listen how he showed his power even over the demons that followed Satan. Let's Get Started Episode Theme: Exploring God’s Design - Jesus the Savior 1. Throughout the gospels in the New Testament, we read lots of stories about Jesus having power over all sorts of things. Can you think of some of the things that Jesus had power over or some of the miracles he performed? 2. Sometimes we have to face some pretty difficult things in our lives. Can you think of a difficult time when it felt like you were powerless or had no control? How do you think the man who was under the control of Legion felt? Memory Verse For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!” Mark 5:8 After You Listen Jesus had just finished showing his disciples that he had power over nature when they came upon a man possessed by many evil spirits. No one could talk to this man or control him. Everyone ran away from him. But not Jesus. Jesus didn’t just have power over the wind and waves. He had power over evil spirits too! And he wouldn’t just let this man stay enslaved to them. Jesus sent the evil spirits out of the man and made him into someone new. But the story doesn’t end there. After this man had been restored and Jesus and his disciples had moved on, the man traveled around the area telling everyone he met what Jesus had done for him.
