The Story of the Nativity of the Lord Nativity of The Lord On this day, the Church focuses especially on the newborn Child, God become human, who embodies for us all Holy Day of Obligation! the hope and peace we seek. We need no other special saint today to lead us to Christ in the manger, although his mother Mary and Joseph, caring for his foster-son, help round out the scene. But if we were to select a patron for monday, December 24 today, perhaps it might be appropriate for us to imagine an anonymous shepherd, summoned to the birthplace Vigil Children's Mass at 4:00 PM by a wondrous and even disturbing vision in the night, a summons from an angelic choir, promising peace and & 7:00 PM - English goodwill. A shepherd willing to seek out something that might just be too unbelievable to chase after, and yet compelling enough to leave behind the flocks in the field and search for a mystery. TUesday, December 25 Midnight Mass at 12:00 AM - English On the day of the Lord’s birth, let’s let an unnamed, “non-celebrity” at the edge of the crowd model for us the way to discover Christ in our own hearts—somewhere between skepticism and wonder, between mystery and faith. And Mass at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM - English like Mary and the shepherds, let’s treasure that discovery in our hearts. 4th Sunday of Advent, Year C, December 23, 2018 Promise Fulfilled I shared with you last week the beauty of the evening liturgy from December 16-23 of Advent when the antiphons for the Magnificat of the evening prayer are also known as the “O Antiphons”. These antiphons express the title of the Messiah and the prophesy of Isaiah. The last one is “O Emmanuel, Our King and Giver of Law: Come to save us, Lord our God!” is our God who has come among us to save us. The celebration of Christmas is a celebration of the fulfillment of God’s promise to his people. In today’s first reading the prophet Micah proclaimed the promise of God concerning the little town of Bethlehem. The town, though small, shall produce a great ruler in Israel and indeed the ends of the earth. The promised One shall “stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the Lord… his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; he shall be peace.” Those promises were fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Messiah. God is always faithful to his promises. When promises become reality and hopes are fulfilled, the heart thrills with joy. That was the experience of Elizabeth and Mary in today’s . When both of them met, senior citizen Elizabeth and the young Mary, the hopes of the Old Testament became fulfilled in the New. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Eliz- abeth recognized that Mary was carrying God within her as she cried aloud: Why should I be honored with a visit from the mother of my Lord? (Luke 1:42). The presence of Jesus (still in the womb of Mary) brought joy even to the baby in the womb of Elizabeth. The promise made by God through the prophets became fulfilled when the Word took flesh in the womb of the Bless- ed Virgin Mary. Jesus fulfilled what the prophets foretold and gave new meaning to our world and to life itself. The name Jesus Christ is at the very center of time today. We talk of time before Christ (B.C.) and time of Christ, year of the Lord (A.D). It is a name on every lip, even those who do not believe in him. The season of Advent will end on Monday, December 24th as we celebrate the Vigil of Christmas. Then we enter into the joy of the fulfilled promise, the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Many families will keep the nativity scene in their homes. Some might even bring the Baby Jesus to church for a blessing. During Christmas, think of the beauty of waiting for the Lord to fulfill his promise. Also, meditate on Baby Jesus and his little town of Bethlehem reflecting on how small beginnings and little things can transform the world! On behalf of the parish clergy and staff, I want to wish all our parishioners a Christmas full of joy and blessings. As you host and/or visit family and friends, I pray for God’s protection upon you throughout this holiday season and all through the coming year. As we celebrate this great day of the birth of our savior, let us remember that Christ is the gift and promise of God to the world. We, as Christians and followers of Christ, must also be his gift to our world. This is CHRISTMAS: Christ the newborn King Has come to our world Raising us from our weakness Into strong people of faith. Strengthened by his love, and Taking his lead, May we experience the freedom he brings, Always sharing the joy of that freedom So that our world becomes a better place.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!

Fr. Felix I. Osasona, MSP Pastor [email protected]

Page 8 | December 23, 2018 CHILDREN’S NEWS NO CCE. We are on Christmas vacation from CCE until Sunday, January 13, Tuesday, January 15, and Wednesday, January 16. Visit the Elementary portion of the parish website for lots of important information and fun extras: http://www.st-mm.com/elementary. When we return, we will continue Big Idea Three: How does Jesus teach us to live a moral life? Our topics include the Ten Commandments, Jesus’ Great Commandment, Conscience Forma- tion, Making Good Choices, and the Beatitudes. Please help your children to understand that the Commandments were given to us to help us get to Heaven. When we obey God, we come to know, love, and serve Him in this world for eternal happiness in the next. Breaking Open the Word for Families for The Fourth Sunday of Advent By Ginger Herrington Reading 1: Micah 5:1-4a. His greatness shall reach to the ends of the Earth; He shall be peace. The prophet Micah foretells that the Lord will be a Shepherd to us. Have you seen the special crozier the bishop walks with? It looks like a very large cane or walking stick with a crook, or curl, at the end. This symbolizes that our bishop is our shepherd, who follows in the ways of Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Work hard to prepare your heart to receive Jesus at Christmas. As we light our last can- dle on the Advent Wreath, let us accept the pardon and peace Jesus offers us in the Sacrament of Confession. Reading 2: From the Letter to the Hebrews 10:5-10. I come to do Your Will, oh, God. Holocausts and offerings God does not desire; He desires a humble, contrite heart which is ready to do God’s Will. When Jesus told us to “pick up your cross and follow Me,” He was telling us that sometimes, doing God’s Will is hard and it requires sacrifices. These types of “offerings” God accepts gladly. He does not need us to butcher and burn an animal; rather, He wants us to listen to Him. As we study the Commandments and Conscience Formation in CCE, remember that nothing pleases God more than when we turn to Him to do His Will or when we turn to Him with a contrite heart in the Sacrament of Confession. We have been consecrated to God through Jesus, our Savior. Behold, He comes! Gospel: Luke 1:39-45. Mary visits Elizabeth. As we pray the second Joyful Mystery of the rosary, we think deeply about Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth. Mary was the first in that she brought Jesus, in her womb, to another. Elizabeth reacts with joy, and her unborn son, John (the Baptist) leaps for joy in his mother’s womb. As we prepare to receive Jesus at Christmas, let our hearts leap for joy. Consecration to the Knights of Columbus Invites families of St. Mary Magdalene Church to offer the prayer of "Consecration to the Holy Family!"

On the first Sunday after Christmas, we have an amazing opportunity to entrust our families to the patronage of the Holy Family for the celebration of this feast. This program guides families in consecrating themselves under the protection of Jesus Christ, his mother, Mary, and her husband, St. Joseph. Families today face many struggles, both through cultural pressure and through the personal struggles that accompany family life. Prayer cards will be given to parishioner's as they enter the Narthex by members of the KC before all Masses on Sunday, December 30th, 2018!
