Enoch "Nucky" Thompson è un "signorotto" abile a controllare la città attraverso le sue convincenti buone maniere e il potere della corruzione. Nucky, spalleggiato dal suo protetto, il giovane James "Jimmy" Darmody, per esercitare i suoi loschi traffici si muove tra politici, rappresentanti del governo, gangster e comuni cittadini. Martin Scorsese ha deciso di avvalersi di Terence Winter, già autore per 'I Soprano', per ricostruire l'atmosfera del proibizionismo in un luogo affascinante come Atlantic City. Il regista newyorkese grazie alla storia di Winter, esercita la sua classe nel ricostruire il mondo corrotto di quel periodo. Nell'episodio pilota si ha spesso la sensazione di respirare gli anni '20, e dal momento del brindisi al proibizionismo (difficile non pensare al grande schermo), l'escalation di Nucky Thompson, interpretato da Steve Buscemi al suo meglio, è un percorso composto da dettagli, da parole sussurrate, da sotterfugi, da piccoli e grandi crimini. 'Boardwalk Empire', come sottolinea la sigla iniziale, è affogato in un mare, in apparenza solo di alcol. Lo stile di regia di Scorsese, che conosce i mobster come le sue tasche, dipinge un affresco d'epoca coinvolgente in cui il fermento della società affascina anche quando è tinto di nero.Per il momento la serie arriva alla quarta stagione.I PERSONAGGI Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (Steve Buscemi): Boss e benefattore di Atlantic City, è un vero uomo dalla doppia faccia, mentre sorride può pugnalare alla schiena. Sa di avere molti nemici, ma ha la capacità di gestirli ricompensandoli a dovere. È il maestro del giovane Jimmy, suo ideale delfino. Il personaggio è basato sul Enoch L. Johnson, realmente esistito ad Atlantic City negli anni 1910-1940. James "Jimmy" Darmody (Michael Pitt): Inseparabile spalla di Nucky, è istintivo e a volte irascibile. Ingenuo e inesperto per la sua giovane età, provato dall'aver partecipato al primo conflitto mondiale, ha un carattere forte ed è una spugna nell'assorbire gli insegnamenti della sua guida. Margaret Schroeder (Kelly Macdonald): Vedova, bisognosa di denaro, diventa l'amante di Nucky per interesse e forse per amore. Nelson Van Alden (Michael Shannon): Agente delle Entrate con una sola missione: indagare Nucky per le sue attività sotterranee.     ENTERTAINMENT ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Comes to Harlem By Ericka Blount Danois on September 9, 2013 “One looks down in secret and sees many things,” Dr. Valentin Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright) deadpans, speaking to Chalky White (Michael K. Williams). “You know what I saw? A servant trying to be a king.” And so begins a dance of power, politics and personality between two of the most electrifying, enigmatic actors on the television screen today. Each time the two are on screen—together or apart—they breathed new life into tonight’s premiere episode of Boardwalk Empire season four, with dark humor, slight smiles, powerful glances, smart clothes and killer lines. Entitled “New York Sour,” the episode opened with bombast, unlike the slow boil of previous seasons. Set in 1924, we’re introduced to the tasteful opulence of Chalky White’s new club, The Onyx, decorated with sconces custom-made in Paris and shimmering, shapely dancing girls. Chalky earned an ally, and eventually a partnership to be able to open the club, with former political boss and gangster Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) by saving Nucky’s life last season. This sister club to the legendary Cotton Club in Harlem is Whites-only, but features Black acts. There are some cringe-worthy moments when Chalky, normally proud and infallible, has to deal with racism and bends over to appease his White clientele. But more often, Chalky—a Texas- born force to be reckoned with—breathes an insistent dose of much needed humor into what sometimes devolves into cheap shoot ’em up thrills this season. The meeting of the minds between Narcisse and Chalky takes root in the aftermath of a mistake by Chalky’s right hand man, Dunn Purnsley (Erik LaRay Harvey), who engages in an illicit interracial tryst that turns out to be a dramatic, racially-charged sex game gone horribly wrong.

    Forever alone in a crowd, Arthur Fleck seeks connection. Yet, as he trods the sooted Gotham City streets and rides the graffitied mass transit rails of a hostile town teeming with division and dissatisfaction, Arthur wears two masks. One, he paints on for his day job as a clown. The other he can never remove; it’s the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel he’s a part of the world around him, and not the misunderstood man whom life is repeatedly beating down. Fatherless, Arthur has a fragile mother, arguably his best friend, who nicknamed him Happy, a moniker that’s fostered in Arthur a smile that hides the heartache beneath. But, when bullied by teens on the streets, taunted by suits on the subway, or simply teased by his fellow clowns at work, this social outlier only becomes even more out of sync with everyone around him. Directed, co-written and produced by Todd Phillips, “Joker” is the filmmaker’s original vision of the infamous DC villain, an origin story infused with, but distinctly outside, the character’s more traditional mythologies. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. Longing for any light to shine on him, he tries his hand as a stand-up comic, but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty and, ultimately, betrayal, Arthur makes one bad decision after another that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty, allegorical character study.

Shannon will next be seen in Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, a love story set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America. The film co-stars Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Octavia Spencer. Fox Searchlight will release the film December 2017. In 2018, Shannon will return to Red Orchard Theatre for its 25th Anniversary to direct the world premiere of Traitor, Brett Neveu's adaption of Henrik Ibsen's Enemy of the People. Traitor will include ensemble members Dado, Larry Grimm, Danny McCarthy, Guy Van Swearingen and Natalie West and will run from January 5, 2018 through February 25, 2018. Back on the big screen, Shannon will then be seen in the Nicolai Fuglsig’s 12 Strong opposite Chris Hemsworth. The project follows a team of CIA agents and special forces who head into Afghanistan in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks in an attempt to dismantle the Taliban. Warner Brothers is releaseing the film in January 2018. Later next year, Shannon will also be seen in writer-director Elizabeth Chomko’s drama, What They Had, opposite Hilary Swank. The story centers on a woman who must fly back to her hometown when her Alzheimer's-stricken mother wanders into a blizzard and the return home forces her to confront her past, which includes her brother (Shannon).
