A panel of experts at yesterday’s ICAO World Bank Routes Global Strategy Summit predicted that air travel growth was imminent but would lag behind economic growth by between three and four months. With increasing signs of economic recovery in several regions of the world representatives from Boeing, Qantas and Southwest Airlines predicted that passenger demand would soon start to pick up, though it may be the end of 2010 or early 2011 before global demand recovers to the peak levels of 2008. OAG is a leading brand of UBM Aviation, the global data, information, news and events business owned by United Business Media Limited. 20-year current market outlook has only marginally lowered its forecast growth rate for the period from 5.0% per annum to 4.9%, but it remains confident that the main drivers of air travel demand have not changed. It forecasts that the world economy (GDP) will grow by on average 3.1% per annum and that passenger numbers would grow by an average of 4.1% per annum. Cargo traffic, currently suffering a major downturn, is still expected to increase by an average of 5.4% per annum. Victory for Victoria

Melbourne airport is reporting strong passenger growth for 2009 – the latest figures showing international traffic increased in August by just over 7% month-on-month. Commenting at the show, Carl Jones, airline business manager, Melbourne airport said: “We are keen to continue building the network into Melbourne with existing customers and airlines, as well as take advantage of the strong growth markets of China and India. Discussions with prospective carriers has been an important part of this show and we are also pleased to hear that has confirmed an interest in the Australian market.” The airport has also been outperforming Sydney and Brisbane in international passenger and export markets in recent months - according to the airport. Melbourne benefits from lower airport charges and curfew free 24-hour access, but there are also other factors at play, as Jones explained. “I think this trend is a combination of a growing outbound market and the appeal of Melbourne as Australia’s events capital, including hosting major sporting events such as the tennis and Grand prix which is an attractive environment for our airlines.” Melbourne airport’s operators, Australia Pacific Airports Corporation Limited (APAC) is ultimately seeking to double throughput to 50 million annual passengers, says Jones. New services to begin later this year include the airport’s first Singapore Airlines A380 service, with daily flights and will start a three-times weekly service from Doha, increasing to daily in January 2010. It will be the airline’s first destination in Australia.

Major Hewlett Packard plant is ticket for 's new international services

Airport rises with the Soaring City: Cao Qianli, Chongqing Airport Group's deputy general manager – “The airport's potential air service development is central to HP's decision to site a plant making 20 million notebooks – any airline opening new international air services can expect attractive subsidies from the municipal government.

Hewlett Packard’s major new plant in West China’s high-achieving city – billed as “Soaring Chongqing” – will produce 20 million notebooks a year and generate a host of other spin-off employers in the local supply chain. The plant has received major backing from Chongqing municipality and the ability of the airport to give access to HP’s world market is also a major factor leading HP to make advanced plans to move much of its Singapore HQ there. Chongqing Airport has been growing at 20% for several years, reaching over 11 million last year. Despite the economic crisis, a further leap of some 30% is expected in 2010 taking throughput to 14m according to Cao Qianli, the airport’s deputy general manager, firmly putting it in China’s top 10. This requires further investment and consequently a new 3,600 metre runway will be commissioned next year, complementing a 3,200 facility. And with current growth not expected to slow Mrs Cao says the airport has put in place planning for yet another runway and third terminal by 2015. So where will be the new routes?

Citizens of Chongqing: Their jobs rest heavily on The airport’s desired routes include Frankfurt, and, interestingly, both HP and the airport – but with a 30% traffic Luxembourg - possibly because it is on a list shared with HP. “Any airline opening hike expected this year, taking throughput to 14m, new international air services can expect attractive subsidies from the municipal this outlook appears to be robust. government” says Mrs Cao.

anna.aero’s Keep these global trendwatch

A regular feature of anna.aero’s weekly analysis (available for FREE at graphs! www.anna.aero) is a revealing look at the trends in traffic across various country markets. For the first time ever we are now publishing the data simultaneously for 10 of the biggest country markets, or 18 if you separate out all the individual countries in the European graph. No where else will you find all this data so succinctly summarised in one place. What it clearly demonstrates is that while overall the global economy has been going through a rough patch during the last 12 months, some countries have been far less affected than others. Some markets are already starting to bounce back (even if quite slowly) while others would appear to be struggling to recover.

China booming, Japan struggling While Chinese domestic traffic is booming once more with growth rates of over 20%, Mexico is still struggling with the after-effects of the swine flu outbreak earlier this year. Brazil’s domestic market appears to be growing healthily once more while the Indian domestic market also reported growth in June. Things are not looking so good in the Japanese market, especially on international routes where demand is estimated to be down over 20% Australia based on data from ANA and JAL. Domestic traffic is estimated to be down Source: BITRE between 10% and 15% for most of 2009 so far. While neither the US nor

Across the nine European markets we have tracked none have reported Russia’s trough seems to have bottomed out in March and since then the traffic growth since April. Norway (a business dominated market), spiked decline in traffic numbers in all markets has slowed somewhat though in March as the previous year contained Easter, while Portugal (a leisure demand is still down around 15% versus a year ago. However, in some dominated market) spiked in April thanks to Easter this year being back of these markets (such as Russia) it is worth looking back at the growth in its traditional slot. Sweden appears to be lagging behind its European rates being reported just 18 months ago to realise that certain regions were colleagues, not helped by the difficulties being endured by SAS. This has been reporting extremely high growth rates and that traffic levels in 2009 are still less of a problem in Norway (thanks to Norwegian’s growth) and above those reported in 2007. (where Cimber Sterling and Transavia have been taking up some slack). It is worth noting that two countries on the periphery of Europe (Morocco and ) both reported traffic growth throughout the second quarter of 2009.
