Walk west to Froglands Road. Taking care on the road, follow after this turn look for Bridleway 10 which will take you to Hill farm. Froglands Road onto Bridleway 101. E At Hill farm take a sharp left then a sharp right and find Foot Path 5 on B For the shorter walk turn right onto Foot Path 104 and amble next to your left hand side leading to Whitecroft and will ultimately join Sandy Lane. the Lukely Brook back towards Carisbrooke. This path will bring you out F Turn left onto Sandy Lane and continue until you reach Foot Path 110 on onto Clatterford Shute. Turn right and head onto Foot Path 88 towards your right. the Car Park. Cross the Car Park and on to Foot Path 96 and quickly onto G Follow Foot Path 110 until you reach Marvel Lane and turn left, Foot Path 89 which will bring you back to the Whitcombe Road. continuing for a short distance until you reach Nunnery Lane. C For the Longer route, Continue on Bridleway 101, which gently H Take Nunnery Lane and continue until you pass Carisbrooke Priory. You meanders through the countryside until it reaches a T junction with will be back where you started. FINISH Byway 144. Turn Left onto Byway 144 which will join Bridleway 202 towards Garston. Where possible, public footpath and bridleway reference numbers have been included in the directions..

The inherently ephemeral nature of the activity of gardening has resulted thus far in this important aspect of cultural life being often overlooked by historians, but detailed examination of the early gardening manuals together with evidence gleaned from contemporary gentry manuscript collections, maps, plans and drawings has provided rare insight into both the practicalities of gardening during this period as well as into the aspirations of the early modern gardener.

INTRODUCTION The West Wight Chalk Downland HEAP Area has been defined on the basis of geology, topography and historic landscape character. It forms the western half of a central chalk ridge that crosses the Isle of Wight, the eastern half having been defined as the East Wight Chalk Ridge . Another block of Chalk and Upper Greensand in the south of the Isle of Wight has been defined as the South Wight Downland . Obviously there are many similarities between these three HEAP Areas. However, each of the Areas occupies a particular geographical location and has a distinctive historic landscape character. This document identifies essential characteristics of the West Wight Chalk Downland . These include the large extent of unimproved chalk grassland, great time-depth, many archaeological features and historic settlement in the Bowcombe Valley. The Area is valued for its open access, its landscape and wide views and as a tranquil recreational area. Most of the land at the western end of this Area, from the Needles to Mottistone Down, is open access land belonging to the National Trust. Significant historic landscape features within this Area are identified within this document. The condition of these features and forces for change in the landscape are considered. Management issues are discussed and actions particularly relevant to this Area are identified from those listed in the Isle of Wight HEAP Aims, Objectives and Actions.
