MIAMI UNIVERSITY The Graduate School Certificate for Approving the Dissertation We hereby approve the Dissertation of Susan Pelle Candidate for the Degree: Doctor of Philosophy _____________________________________ Director Dr. Stefanie Kyle Dunning _____________________________________ Reader Dr. Madelyn M. Detloff _____________________________________ Reader Dr. Kathleen N. Johnson _____________________________________ Graduate School Representative Dr. Emily A. Zakin ABSTRACT (DIS)ARTICULATING BODIES AND GENDERS: PUSSY POLITICS AND PERFORMING VAGINAS by Susan Pelle The vagina has metaphorically and metonymically been the body part that stands in for the category “woman” and it is this emphatic and fabricated link that imposes itself on bodies, psyches, and lives with often horrifying consequences. My goals in exploring performative and performing vaginas are many. I not only lay out how, why, and in what ways the “normal” and “abled” female body established in both dominant and mainstream discourses is, simply put, one with a specific type of vagina, but I also confront the “truth” that vaginas purport to tell about women and femininity. Ultimately, I maintain that representations of vaginas and the debates and discourses that surround them tell us something about our culture’s fears, anxieties, and hopes. Living life as abject can be painful, even unbearable, yet as individuals negotiate this life they can experience pleasure, assert agency, and express ethical and just visions of the world. The artists, writers, and performers explored in this dissertation strategically perform vaginas in multiple and disparate ways. As they trouble, resist, and negotiate “normative” understandings of vaginas, they simultaneously declare that the “problem” is not about bodies at all. The problem is not the vagina. -
ALL MY SONS a Play in Three Acts by Arthur Miller Characters: Joe Keller
ALL MY SONS a play in three acts by Arthur Miller Characters: Joe Keller (Keller) Kate Keller (Mother) Chris Keller Ann Deever George Deever Dr. Jim Bayliss (Jim) Sue Bayliss Frank Lubey Lydia Lubey Bert Act One The back yard of the Keller home in the outskirts of an American town. August of our era. The stage is hedged on right and left by tall, closely planted poplars which lend the yard a secluded atmosphere. Upstage is filled with the back of the house and its open, unroofed porch which extends into the yard some six feet. The house is two stories high and has seven rooms. It would have cost perhaps fifteen thousand in the early twenties when it was built. Now it is nicely painted, looks tight and comfortable, and the yard is green with sod, here and there plants whose season is gone. At the right, beside the house, the entrance of the driveway can be seen, but the poplars cut off view of its continuation downstage. In the left corner, downstage, stands the four‐foot‐high stump of a slender apple tree whose upper trunk and branches lie toppled beside it, fruit still clinging to its branches. Downstage right is a small, trellised arbor, shaped like a sea shell, with a decorative bulb hanging from its forward‐curving roof. Carden chairs and a table are scattered about. A garbage pail on the ground next to the porch steps, a wire leaf‐burner near it. On the rise: It is early Sunday morning. Joe Keller is sitting in the sun reading the want ads of the Sunday paper, the other sections of which lie neatly on the ground beside him. -

GIVING FAITHFUL TESTIMONY: THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE, MORMON WOMEN’S SEXUALITY, AND THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES Jill Marie Peterfeso A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment for the requirements for the degree of Master in the Department of Religious Studies. Chapel Hill 2008 Approved by: Laurie Maffly-Kipp Randall Styers Thomas Tweed ABSTRACT JILL PETERFESO: Giving Faithful Testimony: Theatrical Performance, Mormon Women’s Sexuality, and The Vagina Monologues (Under the direction of Thomas A. Tweed) This thesis rests at the intersection of women’s studies, performance studies, and Mormon studies. Using two case studies—a performance of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues at Utah Valley State College and a Sunstone magazine conference session known as The Mormon Vagina Monologues—this thesis explores how Mormon women have used the theatrical medium to explore their sexuality. By staging or scripting their sexual lives within a community of actors or playwrights, and for a public audience, these women give faithful testimony—not about their religious faith, but about their sexual selves. This public testimony has generated, but it also has enabled the women to find healing, foster empowerment, and reconstitute community. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter I. Press Release – For Immediate Release August 12, 2005 For More Information Contact: Cathy Renna, Fenton Communications, 212-584-5000, [email protected] New Online Effort Launched to Stop Violence Against Women Abroad Eve Ensler, Kathryn Wolford, Zainab Salbi, Christine Grumm and Others Write for www.uswomenwithoutborders.org to Influence U.S. Foreign Policy and the Media SAN FRANCISCO – Motivated by the fight of women and girls across the world to secure their rights, and hoping to build a voice of American women equipped to influence U.S. foreign policy and media, the Women’s Funding Network launched US Women Without Borders (www.uswomenwithoutborders.org) this month. U.S. Women Without Borders, is designed to help stop violence against women by shining a spotlight on the media and Washington to make sure that the impact of war, legal rights, immigration and other major social forces on violence against women’s and girls’ issues are not overlooked. “Our research confirms what we’ve known all along, women in the US have a tremendous desire to support the courageous fights by women around the world to end violence. But, until now, we’ve had little access to opportunities to make a difference. US women want to connect with women internationally and now we have a powerful tool to exercise our voices in support of their struggles,” said Chris Grumm, President of the Women’s Funding Network. Today on the website, Eve Ensler, creator of the Vagina Monologues and founder of V-Day, writes from Cairo about the opening of Bayat Hawa; the first shelter in Egypt for battered women. -

If you could describe to me your process when making clinical decisions with trauma survivors. This is your thoughts and feelings that lead to any decisions you have either during the session or after the session, when meeting with a trauma survivor. Just real generally, your process. P1: I mean it's somebody that I'm not real familiar with, is my initial impression. My major focus would be ego strength and stability, safety. I think that I would want to make sure that my client's external resources, as well as his or her internal resources are well enough intact to proceed with what can be some pretty [inaudible] work. I'm just sort of thinking extemporaneously. Researcher: Exactly. P1: That's I guess, pretty standard, too. Researcher: Say more about ego strengths, and safety that you mentioned. P1: If somebody is unskilled in self soothing, and relaxation and grounding skills, then I would be concerned about moving ahead recklessly into exposure work or doing a lot of recall work. I think that even after I've established that there is a safety structure in our sessions, and that we have solid informed consent and agreements, and that a person is able to take care of their own emotional needs in the core of the session, and between sessions, I would still want to kind of tread into the issues of trauma, again depending on the situation. -
(Re)Constituting Power and Audience in the Vagina Monologues Ashley
Putting Women Back on Top?: (Re)constituting Power and Audience in The Vagina Monologues Ashley Elizabeth Gellert Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In Communication Beth M. Waggenspack, Chair Rachel L. Holloway Jim A. Kuypers April 29, 2011 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: constitutive rhetoric, second persona, third persona, bell hooks, The Vagina Monologues ABSTRACT Eve Ensler’s goal in writing The Vagina Monologues was to generate a dialogue regarding women’s sexuality to counter the silence that pervades the patriarchal culture that they inhabit. To achieve this goal, Ensler constructs two ideologies—one grounded in patriarchy and another supposedly grounded in female agency and dialogue—to reveal the problems within the current ideology in hopes that her audience will adopt her new ideology and resolve the detrimental silence women endure. To evaluate its success, this study utilizes an eclectic approach— comprised of constitutive rhetoric, second persona, third persona, and bell hooks’ rhetorical options—to determine if the play’s content encourages the dialogue Ensler desires. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project would not have been the wonderful experience that it was without several faculty members from the Communication Department, my family, and friends. Dr. Waggenspack, thank you for guiding me through this project with meetings during most of your on-campus days, good discussions, and tough questions that challenged me to think in new ways. Your availability, support, and enthusiasm have been invaluable since I started here last fall but especially so with this thesis.
