The aim of the exhibition was to emphasize the importance of jazz as a serious art form and to familiarize the general public with the Jazz Institute. The black photographers whose work was exhibited were chosen because their compositions specifically reflect personal interpretations of the jazz idiom. MARUANI MERCIER PRESS RELEASE For immediate publication New Works by PETER HALLEY 1 August - 3 September 2020 Kustlaan 90, 8300 Knokke MARUANI MERCIER is proud to announce their 9th exhibition with the American Neo-Conceptualist artist Peter Halley at their gallery in Knokke from 1 to 31 August 2020. Peter Halley was born in New York City in 1953. He received his BA from Yale University and his MFA from the University of New Orleans in 1978. Moving to New York City had big influence on Halley’s painting style. Its three-dimensional urban grid led to geometric paintings that engage in a play of relationships between so-called "prisons" and "cells" – icons that reflect the increasing geometricization of social space in the world. Halley began to use colors and materials with specific connotations, such as fluorescent Day-Glo paint, mimcking the eerie glow artificial lighting and reflective clothing and signs, as well as Roll-a-Tex, a texture additive used as surfacing in suburban buildings. Halley is part of the generation of Neo-Conceptualist artists that first exhibited in New York’s East Village, including Jeff Koons, Haim Steinbach, Mayier Vaisman and Ashley Bickerton. These artists became identified on a wider scale with the labels Neo-Geo and Neo-Conceptualism, an art practice deriving from the conceptual art movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Focussing on the commodification of art and its relation to gender, race, and class, neo-conceptualists question art and art institutions with irony and pastiche. Halley's works were included in the Sao Paolo Biennale, the Whitney Biennale and the 54th Venice Biennale and represented in such museums and art institutions as the CAPC Musee d'Art Contemporain, Bordeaux; the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Des Moines Art Center; The Tate Modern, London; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art; the Museum Folkwang, Essen and the Butler Institute of American Art. -

Mr. Richards has a 3 o'clock appointment. "Come on in, he'll be here in a minute," an assistant says — and here he comes in a minute, at 3:01. This from a man who once prided himself for operating on Keith Time, as in: the security staff ate the shepherd's pie that Keith wanted in his dressing room? Then everyone in this packed stadium can bloody well wait. The Rolling Stones don't play until another shepherd's pie shows up. Chalk up the promptness to the man's new incarnation: he is now Keith Richards, distinguished author. True, he is far from the only rock star to turn memoirist, and far from the only Rolling Stone to write a book about himself — very much about himself. The raven-haired Ron Wood wrote "Ronnie," in which he described Brian Jones as "me in a blond wig." Bill Wyman, the band's retired bass player and bean counter, wrote "Stone Alone," in which not a 15-shilling demo disc went unmentioned. -

Nov 5, 1995* © Hatch-Billops Collection, Inc. 1996 In-depth interview done for the excellent Artist and Influence series produced by Camille Billops and James Hatch for their archive of African American visual and theatre arts. This is my good friend Laura Cottingham. We've been having conversations like this for some time now. I want to start by asking you how you came to understand yourself as an artist, how did you adopt that identity, what in your own life led you to this understanding of yourself? I understood that I was an artist almost by accident. I was pushed into it at about age twenty-five. You have to understand, I came from the kind of family where the arts would never have been encouraged. They were West Indian immigrants, and immigrants of color are de-classed when they come here. They may have been middle class and upper class in Jamaica, but here they were de-classed into the working class. They didn't have time or energy to devote to what we might think of as life- affirming activities. They really had to focus on survival. They understood a lot about taste, like what kind of silverware and china to put on the table, but in terms of what books to read—I don't think that was what they were able to give me. They were not really culture-oriented. And I don't think they were unique in that way. The black middle class has not been involved with wealth accumulation long enough nor is it financially and socially secure enough that bohemianism and encouraging children to be artists is an option for them. -
The Anita Pallenberg Story
Laura Cottingham & The Anita Pallenberg Story May 7 – June 18 At the center of this exhibition is the rarely seen movie The Anita Pallenberg Story (2000) by Laura Cottingham & Leslie Singer. Conceived as a satire on the contemporary art scene of the 1990s, which was defined, in Cottingham’s view, by the rampant progression of a pro- market, highly individualized, and patriarchal art system, the film formulated a critical address of its moment through the lens of life backstage with the Rolling Stones, circa 1968. In open acknowledgement of its layers of costume and citation, the feature-length film blends original footage of the Stones with nonchalant acting performances and cinéma vérité scenes of its own production. Set to a background of post-punk covers, with camera movements taken from Warhol, Fassbinder, and Godard, it presents a portrait of friends in the midst of collaboration, and an uncut study of the modes of appropriation and subjectivity that are contested in cultural production. In a blur of fiction and fact, historical narratives are challenged, and their protagonists transformed, attesting to Cottingham’s claim that, in New York, “we are, in a sense, already living in a movie, breathing in a myth, sustaining ourselves on fantasies, manipulating the plot, and believing against all realities in happy endings.” In 1998, Laura Cottingham completed her video essay Not For Sale: Feminism and Art in the USA during the 1970s, an account of the groundbreaking works of art produced by feminist artists in the United States in the 1970s. At the time, this history remained marginalized and fractured, and Cottingham’s scholarship and inventive research contributed greatly to the reappraisal and recognition of many women artists from the period. -

However, it would have been good to have had more text.The photos, as noted, are fine. The text is quite telegraphic. Here, a few sentences on Brian Jones, Anita Pallenberg, and Keith. The story is obviously one of substance, but there is little detail provided.The description of the albums created over time (whether Keiths solos or Mick Jaggers solos, or Stones works) tends to be, again, underdone. -

In Situ and On Location: The Early Works of Maria Nordman by Laura Margaret Richard A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Associate Professor Julia Bryan-Wilson, Chair Professor Whitney Davis Professor Shannon Jackson Associate Professor Jeffrey Skoller Summer 2015 Abstract In Situ and On Location: The Early Works of Maria Nordman by Laura Margaret Richard Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Associate Professor Julia Bryan-Wilson, Chair This dissertation begins with Maria Nordman’s early forays into capturing time and space through photography, film, and performance and it arrives at the dozen important room works she constructed between 1969 and 1979. For these spaces in Southern California, the San Francisco Bay Area, Italy, and Germany, the artist manipulated architecture to train sunshine into specific spatial effects. Hard to describe and even harder to illustrate, Nordman’s works elude definition and definitiveness, yet they remain very specific in their conception and depend on precision for their execution. Many of these rooms were constructed within museums, but just as many took place in her studio and in other storefronts in the working-class neighborhoods of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Milan, Genoa, Kassel, and Düsseldorf. If not truly outside of the art system then at least on its fringes, these works were premised physically and conceptually on their location in the city.
