Many fine pictures of Keith Richards--and the Rolling Stones--from Day One. That makes this a nice addition to ones rock and roll library. However, it would have been good to have had more text.The photos, as noted, are fine. The text is quite telegraphic. Here, a few sentences on Brian Jones, Anita Pallenberg, and Keith. The story is obviously one of substance, but there is little detail provided.The description of the albums created over time (whether Keiths solos or Mick Jaggers solos, or Stones works) tends to be, again, underdone. While the photos are wonderful--and the aging of Richards is well depicted--the volume does cry out for more detail on tje music.Still, for what it is, this works pretty well. I loved the unique investigative approach, using different types of science and roll models to track and predict patterns. You don't have to try to work the system or worry life untested alternative treatments. A very well researched book that enlightens the reader as to the life of this much-loved southern General.     “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Dan LeRoy (guest post)* The Rolling Stones Not long before his untimely death in February 2020, guitarist Andy Gill of the British post-punk band Gang of Four was reminiscing about his love of The Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction.” “That riff!” Gill enthused. “It was perfect. Every morning when I went to school, and every night when I came home, I marched along to it.”1 Former Gang of Four singer Jon King had innumerable disputes with his old bandmate. But on the subject of “Satisfaction,” the two had long ago reached a satisfying equilibrium. “I doubt there’s many rock music fans who don’t revere ‘Satisfaction,’” King observed. His description of the song’s attributes was admirably succinct: “Killer riff, spare, focused with intense and deep lyrics about alienation in a new consumer culture.” That two post-punk legends like Gill and King would revere “Satisfaction” is hardly a surprise. The divide between old-guard bands like the Stones and the then-new wave in Britain was never as pronounced as it first appeared. But what made the song singular in its time is, paradoxically, what also makes it universal, today and forevermore. More than any other song of its era, it embodies discontent and alienation--and not just the sort beginning to surface in the mid-Sixties. 1 After Gill’s death, an interview with the journalist and author Dan Epstein surfaced in “Flood” magazine. In that previously-unpublished conversation from a few years prior, Gill revealed that he had auditioned for Jagger’s band in the mid-Eighties, and that in rehearsal, he upstaged an outraged Jeff Beck by talking the guitar solo in “Miss You.” A number one single on both sides of the Atlantic in the summer of 1965, it captured the “rumbling of rebellion,” as guitarist Keith Richards put it, and became the Stones’ signature hit for nearly half a decade, until “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” arrived to supplant it as the decade changed.

    The Rolling Stones How Does This All Work? Before rock and roll changed everything about the industry, sound studios used to find songs for artists and sometimes they found artists for songs. They handled everything for all but the biggest stars-song selection, arrangement, mixing, titles, packaging, all of it. This is the world the 20-something Stones and their 19-year old manager stepped into in 1964. The Stones battles with Decca Records would be epic over the duration of the contract their young manager negotiated for them. They seemed to be constantly breaking ground with their covers in the 60s and 70s.     KEITH RICHARDS Keith Richards is an English guitarist, songwriter, and singer most famous for being a founding member of the Rolling Stones rock band. He is generally considered to be one of the greatest rock guitarists in history. He is also well known as a survivor of decades of illegal drug use. Richards was born on December 18, 1943, in the town of Dartford in the county of Kent, in southeastern England. His love of music was expressed early in childhood. He sang with a church choir, and he enjoyed listening to American blues and rock 'n' roll records. Some of his favorite musicians were Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, and Elvis Presley. He learned to play guitar partly by listening to these records. In 1961, when Richards was a student at Sidcup Art College in London, he joined a band named Little Boy Blue and the Blues Boys. A singer Richards knew from primary school named Mick Jagger was already in the band. By 1963, Richards and Jagger renamed their band the Rolling Stones, after a Muddy Waters song. The Rolling Stones released their first album in 1964. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Stones (as most fans called the band) had a long string of hits, including (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (1965), Sympathy for the Devil (1968), Honky Tonk Women (1969), Brown Sugar (1971), It's Only Rock and Roll (1974), and Miss You (1978). Richards and Jagger wrote almost all of the Stones' hits together. On most songs, Jagger sang lead vocals while Richards played guitar riffs.

    Black and Blue IORR Controversy Controversy does not haunt the Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones haunt controversy. Sure, the music is offensive to some bluebloods, but the quickest way to piss off a whole bunch of people all at once is with a controversial album cover. Many people who will never listen to a song can see that and get offended. And the Stones were good at that when they wanted to be. And even when the cover art and title were not inherently offensive it only takes a little marketing to make it so. And so it was with Black and Blue. The Title The title of this 1976 album could have sprung naturally from a number of places. In 1976 The Rolling Stones were black and blue. Keith Richards was spiralling even further into the haze of drug-induced indifference. Getting US visas to tour was harder than ever. Mick Taylor’s heroin addiction had gotten so bad he feared for his life if he stayed with the Stones. He quit the band. The black reggae and funk sounds along with the blues roots of this album make the title a descriptive natural. Mick Jagger explained the title another way. Asked in 1976 why the album is called Black and Blue, Jagger provided the official explanation, “Because it's black and it's blue... Well, black and blue... It's a play on Blonde On Blonde. Blue for the blues - the blues have always been part of our music. Mmmm... it's as good a title as any other, isn't it? They could have called it Cowbell for all I care.
