Knights Valley Meritage
2010 KNIGHTS VALLEY MERITAGE Beringer Vineyards has owned and farmed its Knights Valley vineyards since the mid-1960’s when the Beringer family recognized that the cobbled, rocky alluvial soils created an ideal spot for growing high quality wine grapes. The Knights Valley designation was first used on a Beringer label in 1974. Beringer was instrumental in garnering official recognition for the area in 1983 as a premier wine growing region in the form of its own American Viticulture Area (AVA) designation. VINTAGE & VINEYARDS Vintage 2010 welcomed the return of rainfall to the region with annual precipitation averaging about twenty percent above average. With few exceptions, the growing season was slightly cooler than normal overall with healthy grapevines appellation-wide. A heat spike at the end of August accelerated ripening in some vineyards and helped deliver a harvest of fine quality. Located 17 miles northwest of our winery in St. Helena, Beringer’s Knights Valley vineyard features cobbly, well-drained soils that are well-suited to growing red Bordeaux varieties. The grapes for this wine, which includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot were harvested over a one month period between September 28 and October 27, 2010. WINEMAKING Kept in separate small lots until the final blending, the grapes for our Knights Valley Meritage were picked, quickly brought to the winery and placed in small stainless steel tanks for a 2-day cold soak designed to extract color and flavor from the SOURCING grapes. The juice was then fermented dry and the young wine was placed in small Knights Valley French oak barrels (21% new) for fifteen months.

Cellar Club Wines Spring 2008 2006 Viognier, Russian River Valley, Saralee’s Vinyeard, “Henry’s Cuvee” This Viognier is exotic, fully ripe and packed with an intense combination of flavors and aromas that are floral, creamy and rich. Here is Viognier that explodes from the glass with aromas of honeysuckle, peach blossom and a set of sweet aromas we can only identify as creme brule. The wine is downright rich with custard, baked apple, candied apricot and toasted marshmallow flavors. $35 (Cellar Club Price: $28) 2006 Barbera, Kunde Ranch Vineyard, Sonoma Valley, “Brian’s Cuvee” This is classic Italian-styled Barbera with its firm acidity, cherry aromas and flavors and its hint of sweet summer herbs and notes of fresh strawberry. It comes from hillside vineyards in the northern part of the Sonoma Valley that have striking reddish soils. It will age for at least 10 years. $30 (Cellar Club Price: $24) 2005 Meritage, Sonoma County, “Carlo’s Cuvee” A rarity for Mayo Family Winery, this wine is blend of three varieties from three different Sonoma County vineyards. However, we are quite familiar with each planting. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Delaney Vineyard near Healdsburg in the eastern and warmer section of the Russian River Valley. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc comes from the Los Chamizal Vineyard, an old planting that has served our Cabernet and Cabernet Franc program well for a number of years. $30 (Cellar Club Price: $24) 2005 Syrah, Napa Valley, Page/Nord Vineyard, “Lilyann’s Block” The color of this ripe Syrah seems concentrated, shinning redish blue off the edge.

The mouthwatering palate fans out for almost a minute with a kaleidoscope of rich blackberry, plum, blueberry, and raspberry that is lifted by refreshing acidity. The ripe berry medley trails off into a savory finish of tobacco and black licorice. This is a shinning example of the range of flavors that can be achieved in a blend. It checks all the boxes, and everyone will find it hard to resist. Winemaking Notes Our winemaker, Kevin Mills, blends this wine piece by piece. He uses the modern technique of cold soaking prior to fermentation. This ensures maximum color extraction and the preservation of fruit flavors. Our namesake wine is then barrel aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak. Vi neyar d Notes The Meritage grapes come from our estate vineyard located at the Meritage Resort & Spa, in the shadow of the iconic Grape Crusher Statue. The Vineyard is seven and a half acres and home to all five noble red Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The Vineyard is northern facing, allowing constant sun exposure throughout the day. The gentle slope of the vineyard in combination with the rocky soil gives the vines great drainage to maintain berry concentration.

2017 Hayes Valley Meritage The Hayes Valley Meritage is a true homage to the traditional blends that are crafted in the Bordeaux region of France. The Bordeaux region of France is well known for its cooler climate and often overcast and muggy summers. The Central Coast lends itself to a cooler climate and dreary foggy mornings. This gives the Bordeaux varietals a chance to develop much more intense and complex flavors that you won’t find in a hotter climate style of blend. Flavors and aromas of mushroom and slate coupled with black fruits and a mild tannin structure, mimic the idealistic style that comes from one of the best wine grape growing regions in the world. Harvest Notes In 2017 winemakers and vineyard owners rejoiced in unison from the ideal weather at bud break in the spring, right through perfect ripening temperatures through October and until the last grape was harvested. The winter prior to the 2017 growing season was wet and supplied well above average rain fall to drench the soil profile and create an optimal environment for a fruitful 2017 season. The rain subsided in early spring allowing the vines to dry out and utilize the full water profiles in the soil to gain great early season vigor. Perfect temperatures through fruit set and into the summer allowed for higher than average yields and more clusters on the vine than had been seen in the previous 3 vintages. Warm late summer temperatures gave us long hang time and perfectly ripened grapes on the vine. 2017 will go down as an above average year for yields and a well above average year for quality.
