    ENGLISH 4205: WOMEN AND DETECTIVE FICTION To Sherlock Holmes, she was always the woman. —Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, “A Scandal in Bohemia” At least since Irene Adler beat Sherlock Holmes at his own game, women have had a complicated relationship with both detectives and detective fiction. Though often depicted as either victims or femmes fatales in early detective stories, women characters did frequently have central roles, and even before Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple appeared in 1930, they did their share of crime-solving too. Women writers have also been prominent in the field from its early days: Christie, Dorothy Sayers, and Ngaio Marsh were major figures in the ‘Golden Age’ of detective fiction in the 1920s and 1930s, for instance, and P. D. James, Sue Grafton, and Sara Paretsky are only a few of the many women whose crime fiction tops today’s best-seller lists. In this course we will read a sampling of mystery writing by women featuring female investigators, paying particular attention to the different things our readings suggest about women’s relationships to crime, law, justice, morality, knowledge, and power.     A HAUNTING STORY – DOROTHY SAYERS’S GAUDY NIGHT Dorothy Sayers, poet, novelist, playwright, essayist and translator, was Born in 1893 in Oxford. In 1912 she won a scholarship to Somerville to read medieval French. She took a First Class degree but had to wait until 1920 to Be awarded it, when women were at last admitted to degrees. Her first novel, Whose Body? published in 1923, established her protagonist Lord Peter Wimsey, while a sequel, Strong Poison, 1930, introduced his future companion Harriet Vane. Sayers’s 1935 novel Gaudy Night, featuring both Wimsey and Vane, is set in an Oxford women’s college closely based on Somerville, though transplanted to St Cross Road and ‘the Balliol cricket ground’, and re-named Shrewsbury, and it’s because of these evocations of a Somerville of the past that I’m talking aBout it today, when we’ve gathered to talk (partly at least) about our own pasts in this college. Re-reading Gaudy Night, we notice how much Somerville changed Between 1935 and 1967, when we came up, and how much it has changed again since. Sayers’s novels have traditionally been fitted into the genre she herself called detective stories. Sometimes such works would Be called mystery stories. Gaudy Night, though it comes suitaBly freighted with mystery and with crime, can also fruitfully be read, I’m going to suggest, as a ghost story. Even though many of you must know the novel well, I’m going to invite you to take another look at it. Gaudy Night is littered with references to ghosts.

Sayers, Josephine Tey and Patricia Wentworth. I argue that portrayals of women in these narratives are ambivalent, both advocating a modern, active model of femininity, while also displaying with their resolutions an emphasis on domesticity and on maintaining a heteronormative order, and that this ambivalence provides a means to deal with anxieties about women’s place in society. This thesis is divided thematically, beginning with a chapter on historical context which provides an overview of the period’s key social tensions. Chapter II explores depictions of women who do not conform to the heteronormative order, such as spinsters, lesbians and ‘fallen’ women. Chapter III looks at the ways in which the courtships and marriages of detective couples attempt to negotiate the ideal of companionate marriage and the pressures of a ‘cult of domesticity’.

SAYERS BY Hannah a.m. Oliver ABSTRACT The goal of this project is to investigate the relationship of 1930’s British modernism and the popular return to classical western traditions. The project of modernism had many variants depending on the practitioner and a broader reach than the avant-garde realm we have placed it in to allow post-modernism to grow in linear success from modernism. During its time of composition, modernist work was being created in reaction to a period of radical uncertainty. The goal of this essay is not refutation of high modernism, or to idealize the dreaming spires of Oxford, but to bring the conversation between the two as it existed between them at the time. By examining key works of T.S. Eliot and Dorothy L. When I started reading her detective novels I found a richness in both characterization and plot that impressed me. In 1920, the young writer‐to‐be was among the first group of women to be awarded a Master’s Degree at Oxford University. This was an experience that she later used when describing her heroine Harriet Vane’s adventures in Gaudy Night (1935), generally considered her most important and personal novel. Sayers writes that “[i]t is the only book I’ve written embodying any kind of a ’moral’ and I do feel rather passionately about this business of the integrity of the mind” (Reynolds, 261). In this essay, I intend to read the novel Gaudy Night from a class and gender perspective in order to find what this moral really consists of and furthermore to explore Sayers’ notion of the integrity of the mind. Sayers’ early detective novels had become popular due to her creation of Lord Peter Wimsey – a fantastic sleuth, who made his first appearance in Whose Body? (1923).
