For example, if country X is tagged with a G and a U, it means that at least one source of data identifies Governmental agencies as holders of weapon type Y, and at least one other source confirms the presence of the weapon in country X without specifying who holds it. Note: This application is a living, non-comprehensive database, relying to a great extent on active contributions (provision and/or validation of data and information) by either SALW experts from the military and international renowned think tanks or by national and regional focal points of small arms control entities. salw-guide.bicc.de 3 SALW Guide AR 15 (M16/M4) The heart of the AR-15 is the direct gas system. This system uses no conventional gas piston and rod to propel bolt group back after the shot is fired. Instead, the hot powder gases are fed from the barrel and down to the stainless steel tube into the receiver. Inside the receiver, the rear end of the gas tube enters into the "gas key", a small attachment on the top of the bolt carrier. The hot gases, through the gas key, enter the hollow cavity inside the bolt carrier and expands there, acting against the bolt carrier and the collar around the bolt body. The pressure of the gases causes the bolt carrier to move back against initially stationary bolt. At least 8 million items were produced. The CQ is a variant of the AR-15 rifle manufactured by the Chinese arms company, NORINCO. The "Terab" rifle is a clone of the Norinco CQ manufactured by the MIC (Military Industry Corporation) of Sudan. The "Armada" rifle is a clone of the Norinco CQ manufactured by S.A.M. - Shooter's Arms Manufacturing, a.k.a. Shooter's Arms Guns & Ammo Corporation, in the Philippines. The CQ/Terab has been observed in South Sudan used by some rebel groups in 2013. It has a single action trigger with frame mounted safety that locks the hammer and the slide. The hammer can be locked either in cocked or in lowered position, allowing the gun to be carried in "cocked and locked" state, with safety on, hammer cocked and round chambered. Additional automated safety is incorporated into the rear of the grip and locks the action, when the gun is not properly held. The Colt M 1911 was manufactured by many companies in many countries, partly in the original form, partly modified, partly under license and partly without a license. It was exported to many countries after WW II, and it was in service with the US forces for 70 years. The assault rifle was developed for the orK ean army, but was rejected after a trial period in favor of the Daewoo K11. The rifle has not been mass-produced, but is now offered for export sale. In its design and functionality the DAR 21 resembles the Israeli IWI Tavor TAR-21. It was presented in Abu Dhabi in February 2009 as an integral part of the future soldier system. The K11 assault rifle-element is chambered for the 5.56 x 45 mm NATO-cartridge and its grenade launcher fires 20 x 30 B grenades. The ‘Fire Control System’ (FCS) mounted on top of the rifle provides day and night sight- settings including an infrared (IR) sensor and a ballistic computer. The K1A is the enhanced version of the previous mass produced K1 rifle. Furthermore, the rifles combine technical elements of the operating systems from the AR15/M16-rifles and the AK- series.     169 Lethal legacies: Illicit firearms and terrorism in France FRANCE Nicolas Florquin and André DesmaraisI This chapter analyses the illicit firearms market in France, the ways in which terror- ist networks have been able to access firearms, and the national policies that have been developed to combat (terrorist access to) the illicit gun market. Particularly since 2015, France has by far been the European country most affected by terrorist attacks involving the use of firearms. The use of fully automatic rifles in the January and November 2015 Paris attacks took an unprecedented human toll, with 147 deaths in those events alone.1 In 2015 the French authorities made 424 terrorism- related arrests, compared to 238 in 2014 and 225 in 2013.2 The recent attacks have created a push to reform the country’s intelligence and secu- rity forces in order to adapt to, anticipate and better respond to these threats.3 The gov- ernment has also identified a series of measures to tackle the issue of illicitly held fire- arms: the Ministry of the Interior’s National Action Plan was launched on 13 November 2015, just hours before the attack on the Bataclan theatre started.4 Yet these efforts can only rely on limited information on and analysis of the extent and nature of the illicit arms market in France, owing principally to the fact that levels of gun violence in France were previously moderate, if not low by international standards. This study constitutes an unprecedented effort to present and analyse data and information on illicit firearms and their acquisition by terrorist actors in France.

    Gun Stocks STOCK DESIGN AND STOCK STYLE Types of Gun Stocks A gunsmith requires a basic understanding of stock function prior to becoming a stock maker. A rifle stock, in function, is nothing more than a segment of wood, fiberglass, plastic, or other material shaped to support the rifle’s barrel and action. It also functions to conform to the shooter’s body so the shooter can control the firearm. That’s the mechanical side of it. However, arms lovers the world over consider a stock much more than a mechanical device. They think of a gun stock as a work of art and function (Figure 1). Stocks can be built in a multitude of styles with a stock shape to fit everyone. Even factory rifles come in a wide variety of stock styles. Factory stocks, incidentally, have come a long way and can be considered quite good today, although cer- tainly not in the realm of a custom-made stock.
