Hamirpur Geological Wing Himachal Pradesh STUDY ON THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM, MINERAL POTENTIAL AND FEASIBILITY OF MINING IN RIVER/ STREAM BEDS OF DISTRICT HAMIRPUR, HIMACHAL PRADESH 1 Introduction There is a common feeling amongst general public that mining activity in river beds creates environmental pollution and damage to the public and private property and to safeguard it, numbers of Petitions are being filed in the court of law for justice. A similar Writ Petition No. 188/2001 was filed in Hon’ble High Court during 2001 titled Jagjit Singh Dukhiya V/s State of H.P. pointing a very important issue with respect to the mining operation in and upon the river beds of the State of Himachal Pradesh especially the rivers flowing near the bridges because of vital concern for the safety of the bridge structure. It was further stated in the petition that indiscriminate mining in and upon river beds has been going on unchecked and unregulated causing irreversible depletion as well as hazards and damage to the ecology and environment, including the change of course by the river because of the hazardous, unchecked and totally unregulated mining, as also, in the process threatening the safety of bridges and other structures causing various related problems. The Hon.ble High Court of Himachal Pradesh while passing the order on 16-12-2002 in the said Petition directed the State Government to constitute an appropriate Committee of the Officers and experts of the State Government to formulate the mining policy. Six fossil leaf impressions comparable with extant taxa, Gynocardia odorata R.Br. (Flacourtiaceae), Millettia pachycarpa Benth. and Cynometra polyandra Roxb. (Fabaceae), Ventilago calyculata Tul. (Rhamnaceae), Terminalia tomentosa (Roxb.) W. & A. (Combretaceae) and Daemonorops calycarpus Mart. (Arecaceae) have been reported for the first time from Siwalik sediments exposed near Sarkaghat in Mandi District of Himachal Pradesh. All species are presently distributed in the tropical evergreen to moist deciduous forests of north-east India and south-east Asia. Their occurrence in the Siwalik sediments suggests that tropical humid climate with high precipitation prevailed in the area during Upper Miocene. Received 16 September 2015 – Accepted 28 October 2015 Abstract – In the present study, indoor radon equilibrium equivalent concentration monitoring was carried out using Solid-State Nuclear Track Detectors in some residential areas of the Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, India. The average value of the indoor radon equilibrium equivalent concentration in the study area was found to be 94 Bq m−3, with an annual effective dose of 1.61 mSv. The average value of the indoor radon equilibrium equivalent concentration in the studied areas was found to be higher than the world average indoor radon value of 40 Bq m−3 but lower than the value of the action level 300 Bq m−3, except for two locations. District Human Development Report Mandi Planning Department Himachal Pradesh Foreword The first Human Development Report of Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh is the second in the series of district level Human Development Reports brought out by the Planning Department with the assistance from the Planning Commission and the United Nations Development Programme under the project – ‘Strengthening State Plans for Human Development’. The findings of the report will not only serve as the baseline information but also as a guide in mapping the development strategy for Mandi district with an objective to achieve the goal of ‘inclusive growth’. The document will prove to be an important tool for planners and social scientists engaged in planning and policy analysis at the grass root level. I express my gratitude to the Planning Commission, Government of India and the United Nations Development Programme for providing all important support to the State Government in furthering the cause of human development in the State. The development debate assumed the human development as the central point in the development strategies forwarded by contributions made by Mahbub ul-Haq and Amratya Sen, both from the South Asian region. Late Mahbub ul-Haq advocated that development is about ‘human well being’ and not just about incomes and went a step further cautioning against the ‘jobless, rootless and ruthless’ income oriented growth. -

Specimens of cryptogams were collected from various localities (Gadyahra, Gadohal, Bidi, Parchu, Balh, Ratkel, Tasli nala, Sarkaghat, Barchwar, Longani and Dhagwani) of Sarkaghat region with the help of equipments like knife, spatula, trowel, forceps and also by hands. The specimens were initially stored in containers, plastic bags and paper packets. Field data was recorded in field note book including locality name, collection date and substratum. The specimens were pressed, dried and identified with the help of identification keys and latest literature. During the present investigations, a total of 63 species of cryptogams of families Zygnemataceae, Ulothri- aceae, Hydrodictyaceae, Cladophoraceae, Tabellariaceae, Marchantiaceae, Aytoniaceae, Bryaceae, Anthocerota- ceae, Funariaceae, Hypnaceae, Polytrichaceae, Fissidentaceae, Candelariaceae,
