16th April 2019 [Press Release For Immediate Release] Attention to: General News, Education and Feature Editors and Reporters Diocesan Boys' School 150th Anniversary: Inter-house Soap Box Race (16th April 2019, Hong Kong) In celebration of its historic 150th Anniversary, the Diocesan Boys' School (DBS) will host the Soap Box Race on 8th May 2019. DBS today (16th April 2019) held a press briefing to announce details, followed by a go kart demonstration session. Mr. Joseph Ngai, Member of Board of Directors of DBS Foundation Limited and Mr. Lawrence K. K. Yu, Chairman of the DBS 150th Anniversary Steering Committee attended the event. Three famous race drivers including Ms. Denise Yeung Ka-yee, Mr. Darryl O’ Young Yeuk-hay and Mr. Will Chan Kwok-ching have demonstrated a Go-kart run on the DBS School Drive. In celebration of its sesquicentenary, the School is launching nine major diversified celebration events, in sports, art, music and other areas. The first two events namely the “DBS 150th Anniversary Inauguration Ceremony cum Groundbreaking Ceremony of the DBS Foundation Pavilion” and “DBS 150 Run” were held on 12 January 2019 and 31 March 2019 respectively. This special race shall form part of the School's Inter-House competitions. The School’s House system started in 1922. All students belong to a House. Each House colour is named after the School’s beloved Headmasters from 1869 to 1982. They are Arthur (green), Piercy (dark blue), Sykes (brown), Featherstone (yellow), Sargent (red), Goodban (light blue), George She (orange) and Lowcock (purple). The soap box race, which highlighted the geographically featured school drive of DBS, is regarded as the first of its kind among school anniversary events in Hong Kong. It was also being made possible thanks to the efforts of Mr. Lawrence K. K. Yu who successfully solicited the support of the professional racing team. …Cont’d 1 “Students of each House will drive the Go-karts which are out of engine along the School drive. House team members are required to decorate their Go-karts and attend a briefing session and a trial run, through which they will know more about Go-kart race and learn how to drive,” said Mr. Lawrence K. K. Yu. Being the first event of its kind, the students will design and build 8 unique Go-karts to compete in a series of races along the DBS School Drive. Five prizes will be given. They are Fastest House, Fastest Driver (Champion, 1st Runner Up and 2nd Runner Up) and Best Design. We welcome three professional drivers to inaugurate the race: 1. Ms. Denise Yeung is a Hong Kong’s fastest female racing driver who is the first and to date the only female champion in the HKAA Challenge in N2000 class. She also attained the 2015 Hong Kong Touring Car Champion and 3rd Prize of the 2016 Formula E Hong Kong ePrix E-Golf Professional Race. 2. Mr. Darryl O' Young is a Canadian-born Hong Kong racing driver who won 2019 Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia – Mercedes - AMG GT3, 2018 Blancpain GT Series Asia - Porsche 911 GT3 R, 2018 China Touring Car Championship - BAIC Factory Driver, 2018 FIA GT World Cup - Macau Grand Prix and 2nd in Class - Audi R8 GT4 of 2018 24 Hours of Dubai. He became the first racing driver in Hong Kong to be awarded the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Award”. 3. Mr. Will Chan is a Hong Kong’s fastest go kart racing driver who won numerous awards as follows: 2018 China Karting Championship Champion, 2017 & 2018 Rok Cup China round, and 2018 China ASEAN Karting Championship. In 2017, he was also the Asian Karting Open Championship winner (Macau) and 1st Runner Up of the Macau International Kart Grand Prix Kz.
