    The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications by Helen Patterson A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Helen Patterson 2013 The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications Helen Patterson Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines the hymns of the Antiphonary of Bangor (AB) (Antiphonarium Benchorense, Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana C. 5 inf.) and considers its musical implications in medieval Ireland. Neither an antiphonary in the true sense, with chants and verses for the Office, nor a book with the complete texts for the liturgy, the AB is a unique Irish manuscript. Dated from the late seventh-century, the AB is a collection of Latin hymns, prayers and texts attributed to the monastic community of Bangor in Northern Ireland. Given the scarcity of information pertaining to music in early Ireland, the AB is invaluable for its literary insights. Studied by liturgical, medieval, and Celtic scholars, and acknowledged as one of the few surviving sources of the Irish church, the manuscript reflects the influence of the wider Christian world. The hymns in particular show that this form of poetical expression was significant in early Christian Ireland and have made a contribution to the corpus of Latin literature. Prompted by an earlier hypothesis that the AB was a type of choirbook, the chapters move from these texts to consider the monastery of Bangor and the cultural context from which the manuscript emerges. As the Irish peregrini are known to have had an impact on the continent, and the AB was recovered in ii Bobbio, Italy, it is important to recognize the hymns not only in terms of monastic development, but what they reveal about music.

The Eucharist became one of the most controversial intellectual topics of the High Middle Ages. While medieval historians and religious scholars have long recognized that the twelfth century was a critical period in which many eucharistic doctrines were debated and affirmed, literary scholars have given very little attention to the concurrent emergence of eucharistic themes in twelfth-century literature.

Bibliotheca Ephemeridum theologicarum Lovaniensiutn 12-1.3 Paris: Gabalda; Gembloux: Duculot, 1959. Pp. 579, 486. It is unlikely that any readers who are not reviewers will sit down to read these two fat volumes through. This is entirely intelligible, yet in a way unfortunate; for the editors have assembled here perhaps the most massive consensus of Catholic biblical scholarship ever presented to the public. The Brussels Congress of 1958 was eminently successful in attracting Catholic exegetes; almost everyone was there, and those who were un­ avoidably absent are, as far as their published works are concerned, in full harmony with the Brussels chorus. If anyone wants to know what con­ temporary Catholic exegesis is and what it is doing, he can find it here. There are seventy-nine contributors from France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Eire, the Netherlands, Switzer­ land, Poland, and North America, and no major Catholic university or institute of biblical studies is unrepresented. It is impossible to review these contributions, and the purpose of a review will be better served if I describe the speculum of Catholic exegesis which the volumes reveal. First of all, there is a consensus: a consensus not of detailed conclusions, in which Catholic scholars differ with a joyous zeal for the fray, but a consensus in principles and methods. The principles and methods are those outlined in general in Divino afflante Spirito and rendered concretely practical by the work of a generation of scholars.

Scott Spurlock Catholicism in the early modern British Atlantic has drawn far less scholarly interest that Puritanism, especially outside England and, for obvious reasons, Ireland. This occlusion is in a number of ways problematic, but is the product of several factors, including the rhetoric of seventeenth-century British politics and the recent historiography which has been optimised by Linda Colley's well-articulated argument that by the end of the eighteenth century Britain's constituent populations had developed a united identity based on a shared Protestant ideology.1 While not wholly new, Colley's approach seemingly surprised historians in the early 1990s by arguing that religion did indeed have a prominent role in the formation of Britain in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Subsequently Carla Pestana applied this paradigm to the expansion of British influence into the Atlantic world in the seventeenth century, arguing that by ‘only weakly establishing the Church of England, [the English] oversaw an increasingly diverse religious landscape.

    chapter 6 Indenture, Transportation, and Spiriting: Seventeenth Century English Penal Policy and ‘Superfluous’ Populations1 Anna Suranyi The Atlantic colonies held by England in the seventeenth century meant many things for the state, including a source for resources, a market for manufactured goods, a zone for territorial expansion, a manifestation of success against rivals in the imperial struggle, and also territory for shunting populations that the state deemed undesirable. These unwanted persons consisted of poor vagrants, criminals, and rebels against the state, including the Irish, who were sometimes identified as part of the latter group. By send- ing these groups abroad as indentured servants, the English government sought, at various times, a cleansing of unwanted populations, a perceived moral redemption for the individuals involved, and a savings in detention expenses. In addition to these motivations for expelling certain populations, a further stimulus for shipping indentured servants was to supply labor to the new colonies in the Atlantic. Yet at the same time, the state also strove, not always successfully, to present itself as exerting impartial justice in the three kingdoms of England, Ireland, and Scotland, and attempted to main- tain synchronization of penal solutions to sedition, crime, and poverty in both England and Ireland. Fairness was intrinsically difficult to achieve because of significant con- flicts of interests within the state. The greatest obstacle was the fact that many of the individual contractors involved in shipping servants held influential government offices, and were able to shape public policy to support their pri- vate interests. The period of the Interregnum is particularly revealing in this regard, because it demonstrates a shift in public policy from a focus on the removal of populations deemed excess, surplus, or disorderly to a focus on a simultaneous though competing set of imperatives—moral redemption, pop- ulating the colonies, and economic profit.

Maurice Elliott This article demonstrates Cranmer’s commitment to a godly and sound episcopate by making a decisive break from the Roman mediaeval system he had inherited. Amongst the complexities of reformation politics, this is what Church of England bishops were meant to be. Introduction The continuing importance of episcopacy after the Reformation is one of the features that sets England apart from Continental Protestantism. It could be argued that the Anglican Church’s principal distinguishing feature was its hierarchy operating under the Crown as head of Church and State.1 With the emergence of the Puritan movement during the later English Elizabethan period the role of bishops became a source of contention. Whereas more exaggerated forms of Calvinist and Anabaptist thinking were seeking to leave behind an inherited model of episcopal oversight, Anglican apologists such as Parker, Andrewes, Whitgift, Bilson, Saravia and Hooker argued passionately for its continuance. In the earlier part of the century there was no such debate, and during the reign of Henry VIII, even in the face of numerous diminutions to its customary status, the episcopate was made secure. In fact, there was tacit acceptance of the need for bishops to the extent that in 1539 Thomas Cromwell made provision for the creation of five new diocesan sees.2 The dissolution of the monasteries had demonstrated in draconian manner that orders of monks were expendable within the Henrician ecclesia.
