History of True Sport In 2001, Canada’s Federal-Provincial/Territorial Ministers responsible for sport came together to bring ethics and respectful conduct back into the way Canadians play and compete. They believed that damaging practices—cheating, bullying, violence, aggressive parental behaviour, and even doping—were beginning to undermine the positive impact of community sport in Canada. The first step they took in turning back this negative tide was the signing of what is now known as the London Declaration, an unprecedented affirmation of positive sporting values and principles. The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport conducted a nationwide survey in 2002, which made clear the important role that sport plays in the lives of Canadians, as well as Canadians’ strong desire to uphold a model of sport that reflects and teaches positive values like fairness, inclusion, and excellence. In September of 2003, leading sports officials, sports champions, parents and kids from across Canada came together through a symposium entitled “The Sport We Want.” Several strong messages emerged from this gathering.

MESSAGE FROM DIXON WARD VICE PRESIDENT At the Okanagan Hockey Academy our primary focus is to promote the long-term development of each of our athletes in the classroom, on the ice, and in the community. Putting young, motivated people in a structured environment, surrounded by a world class staff and support system, allows us to deliver a consistent message and value system that we feel is imperative to the long term development of our students. We believe that elite athletes need to be challenged, yet supported, in all aspects of their lives. We hold our student-athletes accountable on their efforts, attention to details, and above all their attitudes. We have learned through experience that those three key ingredients are keys to future success. At the same time, in Canada in general and in Montreal in particular, anti-Semitism was becoming more widespread. The Canadian Jewish Congress, as a result of the growing tension in Europe and the increase in anti-Semitism at home, was reborn in 1934 and became the authoritative voice of Canadian Jewry. During World War II the Nazis embarked on a campaign that resulted in the systematic extermination of millions of Jews. This article focuses on the Montreal Jewish community, its leadership, and their response to the fate of European Jewry. The study pays particular attention to the Canadian Jewish Congress which influenced the outlook of the community and its subsequent actions. As the war progressed, loyalty to Canada and support for the war effort became the overriding issues for the community and the leadership and concern for their European brethren faded into the background. Caiserman The 1930s, with the devastating worldwide economic depression and the emergence of Nazism in Germany, set the stage for a war that would result in tens of millions of deaths and the mass extermination of Europe’s Jews. The decade marked a complete stoppage of Jewish immigration to Canada, an increase in anti-Semitism on the North American continent, and the revival of the Canadian Jewish Congress as the voice for the Canadian Jewish community.

    Demographic context Greater Montréal encompasses 82 municipalities, broken down into 5 territories, and includes the island of Montréal at its centre and the cities of Longueuil and Laval along the north and south shores. According to the 2016 Census, the Montréal census metropolitan area (CMA) had 4,098,930 inhabitants, up 4.2% from 2011. The Toronto CMA’s population rose 6.2% and the Vancouver CMA’s population rose 6.5% over the same period.1 OVER 800,000 CHILDREN UNDER 18 A total of 821,275 children under age 18 were living in the Montréal CMA in 2016. — 46% were between the ages of 13 and 17 (Figure 1). 1 Unless otherwise indicated, demographic data are taken from the 2016 Census. The demographic weight of children under age 18 in Montréal is higher than in the rest of Quebec, in Vancouver and in Halifax, but is lower than in Calgary and Edmonton. While the number of children under 18 increased from 2001 to 2016, this group’s demographic weight relative to the overall population gradually decreased: from 21.6% in 2001, to 20.9% in 2006, to 20.3% in 2011, and then to 20% in 2016 (Figures 2 and 3).     To whom this may concern, My name is Stefan von Engelbrechten and I am currently playing for the Stouffville Spirit Junior ‘A’ Hockey Club in the OJHL. My minor hockey coach, Phil Kestin, is hoping to advance himself to the next level of coaching and I believe my reference may help. Firstly, I would like to talk about my experience last year being a member of Phil Kestin’s Midget ‘AAA‘ Waxers team. Our team last year made it all the way to the OMHA Championships losing in double overtime. The results of our season were impressive but more important was how we got there. Coach Kestin took a group of guys who have never played together and taught them to work inside a system which benefited the team overall and not just individual talents. This helped us achieve a 60+ win season in which we held first place in our division by a wide margin. Starting in pre season camp many of us, who had played elite level minor hockey before, noticed something different about this team. There was a professionalism amongst the coaching staff and an intensity in training and practices that made us feel like this was another level of hockey altogether. Our team had strict schedules to keep on and off ice, weekly one-on-one video instruction and weekly off-ice conditioning training. Our team experienced a lot of success but despite this each week we would have a new set of goals and a new set of things to make us better. Coach Kestin didn’t want us becoming complacent leading up to the OMHA finals where he knew we would face elite teams.
