Executive Summary for 6.83 Ha Salebhar Laterite, Red Ochre & Clay mine EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1. PREAMBLE Minerals are the chief source of present phase of industrialization, and play an important role in the present phase of the national economy and overall development of the nation. India is endowed with significant mineral resources. India produces 89 minerals out of which 4 are fuel minerals, 11 metallic, 52 non- metallic and 22 minor minerals. The Laterite, Red Ochre & clay deposits occurring mainly in Shahdol, Satna, Gwalior, Katni, Jabalpur and Sidhi districts has led to establishment of number of refractory and some ceramic industries in the State. Laterite, Red Ochre & Clay project is located at village –Salebhar, Taluka Bahoriband; Katni District (MP). 6.83 Ha mining lease area is being operated by the lessee Smt. Rekha Sharma having office at Bhopal and she is private individual. In order to assess the likely impacts on environment due to ongoing mining activity and to have a tool of environment management, Smt. Rekha Sharma has submitted the Rapid Environment Impact Assessment study report for mining project. 2. LOCATION 6.83 Ha of Laterite, Red Ochre & Clay mining lease area is located in village – Salebhar, Taluka Bahoriband, Katni District (M.P.). Presently land use of the area is Govt. waste revenue land. The query lease was sanctioned under proposed for Laterite, Red Ochre & Clay. The mining lease was earlier sanctioned upto 29/12/2028 from 30/12/2008 for 20. ENVIRONMENTAL SETTING The applied area is having one small hillocks and this forms a rolling topography around it. The highest and lowest altitudes in the area are 105m and 99m respectively form MSL. Lowest elevation of area is on the western side and highest elevation of the area towards western side. There is 6m elevation difference Smt. Rekha Sharma, Bhopal (MP) Ex. Which follows the natural course i.e. towards in north and south and these drainage are seasonally active. The applied area is devoid of any significant vegetation. However few seasonal herbs and shrubs are seen at many places in the area. The area lies at the cross section of 23 o39’17” north and 80 o10’05” east and is covered under Toposheet no 64A/2. Approach from district head quarter Katni to lease area is as follows Katni to Sleemnabad which is 27 km on NH-7 is southwest-NE of Katni. From Sleemnabad to lease area is 13km in the west direction on sleemanbad- Bahoriband road where one has to travel from Sleemnabad to Dhanwahi village which is 12 km Smt. The accessibility is by road, approachable by all seasoning Damar road. 5. REASON FOR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (EIA) The impact of mine on the environment depends to a large extent on its location with respect to Human settlements, meteorological conditions, ambient air quality, water bodies, agricultural and forest land etc. Most of the adverse impacts of mines are amenable to technological control by providing necessary preventive and control measures and finally through effective environmental management of the operating mines. Keeping in view the likely impacts of mines on environment, this Rapid environment impact assessment report has been prepared for submission to State Pollution Control Board and Ministry for Environment and Forests (MoEF) for clearance of the proposed additional mining area. 6. PROJECT DESCRIPTION 6.1 RESERVES Mineable Reserves & Anticipated Life of the Mine Mineable reserves are those reserves, which are left after deducting mineral blocked in benches and barrier zone area. Total Mineable Reserve is 312926 T Thus First Five Year Production= 34624T Balance Reserves = 312926-34624= 278302 Smt. Rekha Sharma, Bhopal (MP) Ex. Thus Total Mine Life = 23.93+5=28.93 say 29 year form 2008 The life of the mine is worked out on the basis of the production projected presently. This will change depending upon the market conditions as well as the increase in reserves after proposed exploration. 6.2 Mining Method Present mining method: Presently no mining activity has been carried out. Only prospecting work has been carried out in mining lease. Presently total excavated area is 0.07124ha. Details of existing pits excavated within the applied area are given as follows; Pit no. Location Logging Pit-1 14 x 13 x 2.5m North 0.0-2.5m – Laterite Pit-2 20 x 15 x 2-6m North 0.0-4.5m- Laterite 4.5-6.0m- Clay with red ochre Pit-3 20 x 10x 4 North east 0.0-4.0m- Laterite Pit-4 10 x 3 x 6 Eastern 0.0-4.5m- Laterite 4.5-6.0m – Clay with red ochre Proposed Mining Method Proposed mining operations will be carried out by opencast manual method of mining using hand tools such as spades, hammer, crowbar, chisel etc. loading of mineral in to truck/ dumper will be done manually by head load using can basket and tasla etc. The mining operations will be mainly carried out by manual means. The removal of waste material as murum, ferruginous material and weathered clayey material and these dumps will be keeps in southeast barrier zone of the applied area. The mineral will be loading to the trucks and tractors will be done manually. During the five year haulage road will be developed at the gradient of 1:16. Whenever the hard formation will come then occasional blasting may in use. Year wise development/production for the first Five years: - During first five year working block will be chosen in the north central part of the applied area covering already existing pit-II for systematic development. In this pit laterite is seen about 4.5m and clay and ochre is seen about 1.5m-2.0m and road Smt. Rekha Sharma, Bhopal (MP) Ex. Preparation of garland drain/parapet/ retaining wall etc. will be done first five year development programme. Progressive mining will be done from north to south direction in first year whereas north to south from 2 nd to 5 th year. Proposed method of mining will be manual opencast method. During first to fifth year height and advance will be maintain at 1.5m. Ground water seepage will not encounter because the ground water table 12m below the ground surface although in rainy season inspite of garland proposal around the five year block rains water may accumulate which will be dewatered by the 5HP pump through settling tank situated in southwest direction of the applied area. During the period of working site services like mine office separate lavoratory for male and female developed in eastern barrier zone. Plantation will also be done during the five year period. During the ensuing the five year period working following development will also be perform simultaneously which are as follows: i) Development of road: During the ensuing the five year about 200m (length) and 1-2m (width) road will be developed at a gradient of 1:14 out of which 60m will connect the working pit to the kuchha road at the south of the applied area and 140m will be in the five year block.
