    A HISTORY OF 'Beaver County Martha Sonntag Bradley UTAH CENTENNIAL COUNTY HISTORY SERIES A HISTORY OF 'Beaver County Martha Sonntag Bradley The settlement of Beaver County began in February 1856 when fifteen families from Parowan moved by wagon thirty miles north to Beaver Valley. The county was created by the Utah legislature on 31 January 1856, a week before the Parowan group set out to make their new home. However, centuries before, prehistoric peoples lived in the area, obtaining obsidian for arrow and spear points from the Mineral Mountains. Later, the area became home to Paiute Indians. Franciscan Friars Dominguez and Escalante passed through the area in October 1776. The Mormon settlement of Beaver devel­ oped at the foot of the Tushar Mountains. In 1859 the community of Minersville was es­ tablished, and residents farmed, raised live­ stock, and mined the lead deposits there. In the last quarter of the nineteenth century the Mineral Mountains and other locations in the county saw extensive mining develop­ ment, particularly in the towns of Frisco and Newhouse. Mining activities were given a boost with the completion of the Utah South­ ern Railroad to Milford in 1880.     NATURE’S MARVELS Blue Volcano Kirti Chhabra 60 | Science Reporter | April 2019 OLCANIC eruptions are heart stopping at their extreme but this volcano of Indonesia looks Vspectacular when it flows out its lava. The volcano called Kawah Ijen, erupts striking blue lava and is therefore also known as blue volcano. The alive Kawah Ijen volcano is 8,660 ft tall. It is one of the world's most unique volcanoes because instead of producing the usual red lava and black smoke, its underground activities result in bright blue flames rising into the air. The phenomenon is caused due to the combustion of the volcano’s sulphuric gases with atmospheric oxygen at temperatures above 360°C. The blue volcano spews out extremely high quantities of sulphuric gases at high pressure and temperatures sometimes even at 600°C along with the lava. But the colour of this blue molten lava can be seen only during night time. At the top of the volcano, Kawah Ijen Crater Lake is the world's largest body of water filled with hydrochloric acid. Indeed, it's the acid that makes the water green. The volcano spews hydrogen chloride gas, which reacts with the water and forms a highly condensed hydrochloric acid with a pH of almost 0. The lake has a volume of 36 million cubic meters. This sulphur-rich lava has led to mineral deposition around the volcano. Miners extract the sulfur rock, which is formed after the blue flames blow out leaving behind a solid sulfur-rich rock. They then carry these large rocks in baskets down the side of the mountain to be paid per kilogram.

Sephton Impacts and Astromaterials Research Centre, Department of Earth Science and Engineering, Imperial College London, SW7 2AZ, UK Abstract Pyrolysis Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (pyrolysis FTIR) is a potential sample selection method for Mars Sample Return missions. FTIR spectroscopy can be performed on solid and liquid samples but also on gases following preliminary thermal extraction, pyrolysis or gasification steps. The detection of hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon gases can reveal information on sample mineralogy and past habitability of the environment in which the sample was created. The absorption of IR radiation at specific wavenumbers by organic functional groups can indicate the presence and type of any organic matter present. Here we assess the utility of pyrolysis-FTIR to release water, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and organic matter from Mars relevant materials to enable a rapid habitability assessment of target rocks for sample return.

The unique physical properties of lava pose interesting challenges for recovery, as lava flows can be highly permeable while lava itself is dense, sterile, and generally inhospitable towards life. This dissertation examines two aspects of landscape recovery following lava flow emplacement: (1) hydrologic adaptation of surface and groundwater to recent volcanism and (2) plant colonization of young lava flows.
