Olds This reading of La Comédie humaine traces the narrative paradigm of the young hero within Balzac’s literary universe. A dynamic literary signifier in nineteenth-century literature, the young hero epitomizes the problematic existence encountered by the individual in post-revolutionary France. At the same time, he serves as a mouth-piece for an entire youthful generation burdened by historical memory.

En 1845, quatre-vingt-sept ouvrages étaient finis sur quatre-vingt-onze, et Balzac croyait bien achever ce qui restait en cours d’exécution. Lorsqu’il mourut, on retrouva encore cinquante projets et ébauches plus ou moins avancés. « Vous ne figurez pas ce que c’est que La Comédie Humaine ; c’est plus vaste littérairement parlant que la cathédrale de Bourges architecturalement », écrit-il à Mme Carreaud. Dans l’Avant-Propos de la gigantesque édition, Balzac définit son œuvre : La Comédie Humaine est la peinture de la société. Expliquez-moi... Balzac. 3 Les proscrits Édition de référence : Balzac : Les proscrits, Louis Lambert, Séraphîta. Paris, Imprimerie nationale, Nouvelle Librairie de France, 1958. Texte établi et annoté par Marcel Guilbaud. 4 Les Proscrits furent publiés d’abord dans la Revue de Paris de mai 1831 ; ils étaient divisés en trois chapitres : Le Sergent de ville, Le Docteur en théologie, Le Poète. Ils font ensuite partie, sous cette forme, des Romans et Contes philosophiques (Paris, Gosselin, 1831), insérés dans le tome II. Avec la dédicace et la date d’octobre 1831 ils sont réunis à Louis Lambert et Séraphîta dans le Livre mystique, précédé d’une importante préface (Paris, Werdet, décembre 1835 ; réédité en février 1836). Ensuite, sans la dédicace, les Proscrits sont joints à Massimilla Doni, Gambara et Séraphîta dans le Livre des douleurs (Études philosophiques, Paris, Souverain, 1840, tomes VI-X), dont ils forment le deuxième tome.

    LOUIS GABRIEL-ROBINET Balzac, « la Revue des deux mondes » et la Société des gens de lettres e 1830 à 1833, Honoré de Balzac va collaborer activement à la Revue de Paris et à la Revue des deux mondes. Fondée par Véron en 1831, la Revue de Paris introduisit le roman dans la presse périodique. En 1831, elle passa des mains de Véron dans celles d'Amédée Pichot. En 1834, elle fut achetée aux enchères par François Buloz, déjà propriétaire de la Revue des deux mondes, dont le premier exemplaire avait paru le 1er août 1829. Les deux recueils se publièrent alors par les soins de la même administration. A chacun fut assigné un rôle particulier. La Revue de Paris fut plus littéraire, plus consacrée aux arts. La Revue des deux mondes fut plus philosophique, plus docte, plus dogmatique. Elle devait être, selon son fondateur, « une inlassable ouvrière au service du rayonnement français"». Les deux publications vécurent ainsi jusqu'à l'avènement de « la presse bon marché » qui leur fut fatal. En effet, les attraits du journal quotidien * au rabais » rendirent très difficile la situation des recueils hebdomadaires ou bimensuels, dont le prix était élevé. Les journaux enlevèrent aux revues un de leurs plus puis• sants moyens de séduction en monnayant dans leur feuilleton de chaque jour les romans et les récits que les revues publiaient en bloc. La participation de Balzac à la Revue de Paris fut très importante de 1830 à 1837. In the city of Tours, in whose gabled streets there lingers still some memory of la belle Impéria, Honoré de Balzac was born on the 20th of May, 1799. His childhood was in no wise extraordinary, save for the avidity with which he read the Bible and the keen delight which he took in the possession of a little red violin. He was indifferent to romps and games, and when not lost in the mysterious depths of the Scriptures he played by the hour on his fiddle, and extracted therefrom an enjoyment which was almost sensual in its intensity. His parents were well-considered people, in easy circumstances. Honoré was their first-born, and to him were subsequently given two sisters and a brother, concerning whom only a passing mention need be made. His eldest sister, Laure, became the wife of M. de Surville, a civil engineer, survived her illustrious brother, and published his letters, together with a weak sketch of his life; his second sister also married, but died at an early age; while his brother Henri sought his fortune, after the manner of younger sons, in the colonies, failed to find it, and was otherwise entirely uninteresting. At the age of eight, Balzac was placed as boarder at the Collége de Vendôme, where, through the compression of his dreamy nature by unaccustomed tasks and rules, he soon lapsed into a careless neglect of his duties, and became, in consequence, one of the most frequently punished pupils in his class.

Le but de ce projet est d'examiner l'attitude de l'un des plus grands romanciers du XIX ieme siecle, Honore de Balzac, vis-a-vis de la question du libre arbitre en comparant les idees philosophiques de l'auteur qui se manifestent dans un de ses romans les plus connus, Illusions perdues, avec les doctrines theologiques representees dans Du serf arbitre de Luther qui nie l'existence du libre arbitre; dans Du libre arbitre d'Erasme, qui, au contraire, soutient le libre arbitre de I'homme; et finalement dans les ceuvres mystiques d'Emmanuel Swedenborg, le philosophe et visionnaire suedois qui a beaucoup influence la vie et les oeuvres de Balzac.
