  • The Recordings
Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. This way, the entire book can be verified by listening to the same re- cordings and works that I heard. For locations of these private sound vaults, please e-mail me and I will send you the links. They are not to be shared or downloaded, and the selections therein are only identified by their numbers from the complete list given below. Chapter I: 0001. Contact: Joe Plowman, publicist Email:[email protected] Phone: 610-417-7534 Acoustic Jazz Guitar Great Marty Grosz Marks 90th Birthday with His New Memoir “…entertaining, readable, funny, and revealing…a real and sometimes startlingly candid pleasure” – Michael Steinman, Jazz Lives PHILADELPHIA, PA March 4, 2020 – A giant of jazz rhythm guitar, Marty Grosz has performed with jazz greats such as Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, Ruby Braff, Dick Hyman, Bob Haggart, Bob Wilber, and Kenny Davern. And after performing for 70 years, he has stories to tell. Part memoir, part transcribed oral history, It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie serves up Marty’s story raconteur style—full of sardonic wit with a touch of vaudeville. Part 1: My Story: Candid stories of life with his famous father, German Expressionist George Grosz; sailing to the US; his Chicago jazz years; travels abroad; Soprano Summit; Classic Jazz Quartet; the Orphan Newsboys. Part 2: The Interviews: Transcriptions from 11 live interviews between 2015 and 2019. Marty opines on guitar tuning, Eddie Condon, drummers and bassists, Slam Stewart, Mingus, Chet Baker, Hoagy Carmichael, Herb Ellis, and more. “A giant of jazz rhythm guitar, Marty Grosz is equal parts showman, jazz scholar and raconteur. A virtuoso in a playing style that’s both timeless and so far off the radar it’s all but lost.” — Riverwalk Jazz Marty Grosz (b. 1930, Berlin) came to the United States at age three. He is considered among the best acoustic jazz guitarists of the twentieth century, as well as a vocalist, humorist, composer and arranger. THE TRI-STATE SKYLARK STRUTTER Member of South Jersey Cultural Alliance and Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance Member of American Federation of Jazz Societies and Jersey Arts VOLUME 18 NUMBER 6 March 2008 ********************************************************************************************************************************* T OUR NEXT CONCERT DUPONT COUNTRY CLUB SUNDAY, MARCH 16 1001 Rockland Road Wilmington, Delaware 19803 2 PM TO 5:30 PM Dan Levinson formed the Palomar Quartet to celebrate the THE PALOMAR QUARTET birthplace of Swing in the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles. The quartet is similar to the Benny Goodman Quartet with Lionel WITH MOLLY RYAN Hampton, Teddy Wilson, Gene Krupa, and various singers. We have an equal or even better group today with Dan on reeds (mostly clarinet), unbeatable Mark Shane on the ivories (which is one reason why we are at the DuPont Country Club), popular Kevin Dorn keeping time and taking great solos on the drum set, and young North Jersey virtuoso, Matt Hoffman on the vibraphone. Molly Ryan will give great renditions in her own unique style of the big band singers of the 1030 to 1970 period. Last year you may remember that Dan proposed to Molly on the pulpit level at St. Andrew’s Methodist church. We were honored. Q AND A WITH DAN LEVINSON TSSS Please tell us about your early years. DL First I possess no musical talent but an incredible focus, determination, and inspiration. Born July 5, 1965 in Brentwood, Los Angeles, CA, I lived with my mother from age 8 on. While the family had no musicians, I tried piano and guitar. I was a straight- A student in public school and went to private Windward School at age 13 for special attention.

We’re looking forward to meeting you at St Sudries Bay in September. If you’ve been with us before, or if you’ve studied our programmes, you will have noted that we like to present a selection of bands and musicians that is different from many other jazz weekends. We like to offer you an alternative to the “same old same old” and to present performers of note who have something to say, and who articulate it well. Please read on - and you’ll see that, once again, we’re doing just that. And, this year there’s even more! As well as presenting EXCELLENT MUSICIANS AND EXCITING BANDS, in 2019 we’re also featuring SWING DANCING DEMONSTRATIONS by HOPPIN’ MAD! who will also be giving DANCE LESSONS on Saturday and Sunday. Don’t be shy - they’re fun, and they’re pitched at all levels! Throughout the whole weekend we have a very attractive programme of first class, entertaining, musicians who play their music with affection, integrity and with regard for their audience - who don’t “just go through the motions”.
