Afro-Caribbean Ensemble Saturday, April 6, 2019, 7:30 PM LINK TO HIGH RESOLUTION PHOTOS (Bronx, NY) – On Saturday, April 6, Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture presents a double bill of Latin jazz with a Tribute to Dave Valentin, featuring a quintet led by the late flutist’s musical director, pianist Bill O’Connell with virtuoso flutist Andrea Brachfeld, then following with the debut of Bill O’Connell’s most recent project A.C.E. (Afro-Caribbean Ensemble) featuring a nonet comprised of some of New York’s top jazz and Latin jazz artists. The concert will be in the Repertory Theater at Hostos Community College, beginning at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $20, with student tickets at $5, and can be purchased online at www.hostoscenter.org or by calling (718) 518-4455. The box office is open Monday to Friday, 1 PM to 4 PM and will be open two hours prior to performance. In addition to O’Connell, the quintet includes original Dave Valentin Quartet members -- bassist Lincoln Goines and drummer Robby Ameen. Percussionist Román Díaz has been added to the group, and in the title role will be flutist Andrea Brachfeld, well-known for her musical abilities in jazz and Latin Jazz. Valentin said of Brachfeld, “with all due respect, she plays her buns off; one of the first ladies to disprove the concept that only men can deal with the real deal…” The original quartet with Brachfeld have performed tributes to Valentin in different venues in New York and repeat engagements at the Blue Note in Tokyo.

With an additional gift, Mrs. Coolidge financed the construction of the Coolidge Auditorium which has become world famous for its magnificent acoustics and for the caliber of artists and ensembles who have played there. The McKiM FUND in the Library of Congress was created in 1970 through a bequest of Mrs. W. Duncan McKim, concert violinist, who won international prominence under her maiden name, Leonora Jackson, to support the commissioning and performance of chamber music for violin and piano. The audiovisual recording equipment in the Coolidge Auditorium was endowed in part by the Ira and Leonore Gershwin Fund in the Library of Congress.     Sammy Figueroa has long been regarded as one of the world’s great musicians. As a much-admired percussionist he provided the rhythmical framework for hundreds of hits and countless recordings. Well-known for his versatility and professionalism, he is equally comfortable in a multitude of styles, from R & B to rock to pop to electronic to bebop to Latin to Brazilian to New Age. But Sammy is much more than a mere accompanist: when Sammy plays percussion he tells a story, taking the listener on a journey, and amazing audiences with both his flamboyant technique and his subtle nuance and phrasing. Sammy Figueroa is now considered to be the most likely candidate to inherit the mantles of Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barretto as one of the world’s great congueros. Sammy Figueroa was born in the Bronx, New York, the son of the well-known romantic singer Charlie Figueroa. His first professional experience came at the age of 18, while attending the University of Puerto Rico, with the band of bassist Bobby Valentin. During this time he co-founded the innovative Brazilian/Latin group Raices, which broke ground for many of today’s fusion bands. Raices was signed to a contract with Atlantic Records and Sammy returned to New York, where he was discovered by the great flautist Herbie Mann. Sammy immediately became one of the music world’s hottest players and within a year he had appeared with John McLaughlin, the Brecker Brothers and many of the world’s most famous pop artists.     Milton Cardona Milton Cardona, a Puerto Rican percussionist who was a mainstay of New York salsa, a studio musician on hundreds of albums and a Santeria priest who introduced sacred traditional rhythms to secular audiences, died on Sept. 19 in the Bronx. He was 69. The cause was heart failure, said his wife, Bruni. In Latin bands and at recording sessions led by David Byrne, Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock and many others, Mr. Cardona primarily played conga drums — generally not as a flashy soloist but as the kinetic foundation and spark of a percussion section. He was an authoritative advocate for some of Latin music’s deepest traditions; he was also a vital, innovative participant in many ambitious fusions. Mr. Cardona worked with the trombonist and bandleader Willie Colón on and off through four decades and was a member of the singer Hector Lavoe’s band from 1974 to 1987. He also recorded two albums as a leader and led the Santeria group Eya Aranla. Mr. Cardona was a santero, a priest of Santeria, the Afro- Caribbean religion rooted in the Yoruba culture of West Africa. Santeria invokes a pantheon of African deities with rhythms and songs that have filtered into the popular music of Latin America and the world. Mr. Cardona studied the Yoruba language to understand the traditional prayers he was singing. “I always said, ‘Why should I learn the prayer if I don’t know what it means?’ ” he explained in an interview with Drum magazine. The rhythms of Santeria are traditionally played on batá drums, a family of three hand drums.

This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

Thanks July 1 Concert To Feature Top Latin Jazz Artists.A benefit concert for the Grammy Award-winning Latin jazz flutist Dave Valentin will be presented in the Main Theater at the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture on Tuesday, July 1, 7:30 PM. Entitled “Para Ti” (For You), the concert will feature an acclaimed array of Latin jazz artists including Eddie Palmieri, Arturo O’Farrill, Bobby Sanabria, Nicky Marrero, Pete Nater and others. A life-long resident of the Bronx, Valentin, who was known for donating his talents to many worthwhile causes and community organizations, suffered a stroke in March 2012 and has been unable to perform. Through the support of sponsors including the Bronx- Lebanon Hospital Center, Hostos Community College, Manhattan Parking Group and WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM, all the costs of the concert, which will help Valentin with medical and living expenses, have been covered. Tickets are $25 and $35, with VIP tickets beginning at $175 and are available through the Hostos Center Box Office and can be purchased by calling (718) 518-4455 or through www.hostos.cuny.edu/culturearts. Under the musical direction of Valentin’s music director, pianist Bill O’Connell, assisted by tres guitar master Nelson González, the concert will feature a trove of Latin jazz artists including ten- time Grammy winner and pianist Eddie Palmieri along with pianist and Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra leader Arturo O’Farrill, renowned Bronx-based pianist Valerie Capers, legendary Latin jazz bassists Rubén Rodríguez and Andy González, trombonist and band leader Papo Vázquez, and flutist Eddy Zervigón of the popular Charanga group Orquesta Broadway.
