Ruben Rodriguez Ruben Rodriguez Ruben Rodriguez was born in New York City and grew up in East Harlem and Puerto Rico. He has been recognized as one of the best and hardest-working Latin music bass players in the United States. Mr. Rodriguez, who’s father played classical guitar, taught himself the bass in junior high then spent some time under the tutelage of the esteemed bassist Victor Venegas. Since getting his first big break playing with Johnny Colon in 1979, he has worked with Grover Washington Jr., Roberta Flack, Eddie Palmieri, The Fania All Stars, and the late, great Machito. His exhaustive discography includes his work with Marc Anthony, Tito Puente, India and Africando, and Celia Cruz. Along with his producer/friend, Sergio George, Ruben Rodriquez has been noted to have revolutionized the sound of contemporary popular salsa. The Fender bass, both precision and jazz, have been my sound for more than 37 years! I have counted on them for thousands of live shows and over 350 recordings to date. In short, the Fender bass was the sound of my generation!

  • Sammy Figueroa Full
Sammy Figueroa has long been regarded as one of the world’s great musicians. As a much-admired percussionist he provided the rhythmical framework for hundreds of hits and countless recordings. Well-known for his versatility and professionalism, he is equally comfortable in a multitude of styles, from R & B to rock to pop to electronic to bebop to Latin to Brazilian to New Age. But Sammy is much more than a mere accompanist: when Sammy plays percussion he tells a story, taking the listener on a journey, and amazing audiences with both his flamboyant technique and his subtle nuance and phrasing. Sammy Figueroa is now considered to be the most likely candidate to inherit the mantles of Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barretto as one of the world’s great congueros. Sammy Figueroa was born in the Bronx, New York, the son of the well-known romantic singer Charlie Figueroa. His first professional experience came at the age of 18, while attending the University of Puerto Rico, with the band of bassist Bobby Valentin. During this time he co-founded the innovative Brazilian/Latin group Raices, which broke ground for many of today’s fusion bands. Raices was signed to a contract with Atlantic Records and Sammy returned to New York, where he was discovered by the great flautist Herbie Mann. Sammy immediately became one of the music world’s hottest players and within a year he had appeared with John McLaughlin, the Brecker Brothers and many of the world’s most famous pop artists. Since then, in a career spanning over thirty years, Sammy has played with a

  • Milton Cardona
Milton Cardona Milton Cardona, a Puerto Rican percussionist who was a mainstay of New York salsa, a studio musician on hundreds of albums and a Santeria priest who introduced sacred traditional rhythms to secular audiences, died on Sept. 19 in the Bronx. He was 69. The cause was heart failure, said his wife, Bruni. In Latin bands and at recording sessions led by David Byrne, Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock and many others, Mr. Cardona primarily played conga drums — generally not as a flashy soloist but as the kinetic foundation and spark of a percussion section. He was an authoritative advocate for some of Latin music’s deepest traditions; he was also a vital, innovative participant in many ambitious fusions. Mr. Cardona worked with the trombonist and bandleader Willie Colón on and off through four decades and was a member of the singer Hector Lavoe’s band from 1974 to 1987. He also recorded two albums as a leader and led the Santeria group Eya Aranla. Mr. Cardona was a santero, a priest of Santeria, the Afro- Caribbean religion rooted in the Yoruba culture of West Africa. Santeria invokes a pantheon of African deities with rhythms and songs that have filtered into the popular music of Latin America and the world. Mr. Cardona studied the Yoruba language to understand the traditional prayers he was singing. “I always said, ‘Why should I learn the prayer if I don’t know what it means?’ ” he explained in an interview with Drum magazine. The rhythms of Santeria are traditionally played on batá drums, a family of three hand drums.

  • Welcome to Canciones De Lucha, San Diego, California
Welcome to Canciones de Lucha, San Diego, California We welcome you to Canciones de Lucha, a fundraiser to support Chicano Music in the on-line exhibit Unidos Por La Causa, http://library.sdsu.edu/exhibits/2010/10/UnidosPorLaCausa/index.html. The idea for this fundraiser performance was born out of the recognition that music was an integral part of the Chicano Movement and Student Movement of the '60s, and the desire to share this history with the on-line public, our community and our children. During the '60s, many of us were teenagers who believed that all people had human rights and that we needed to work to guarantee human rights for all. Here in San Diego we contributed to this work in many ways ; some resulting in long-standing local institutions. But where ever we volunteered, there were always guitars and music, ... on a grape boycott picket line in front of Safeway in National City, at Camp Oliver (Catolicos por la Raza), at the Las Chicanas Mother-Daughter Tea at Scripps Cottage SDSU, or at conferences at SDSU, City College or UCSD. There was always music. It is because of this history, so important to the musicians here today, that these songs be remembered. We, musicians have come from San Francisco, Brawley, San Bernardino and Baja to share our songs with you. And there are several others who wished that they could be here singing today. Several of today's songs are originals written by us which document the thoughts and concerns of the San Diego Chicano Movement at that time.
