It is based on methods of inquiry established by Enric and is conceived of as a platform for the promotion of knowledge. In addition to housing the archive of Enric Miralles, the Foundation will promote programs, workshops, courses, conferences, lectures, and international exchanges. The archive includes all project drawings, sketches, notes, photographs, correspondence and approximately one thousand original models. Th is archive will give the public insight into Enric´s unique intellectual and architectonic design process and will be completely integrated into the Fundation´s activities. Enric Miralles Enric Miralles (Barcelona, 1955, Sant Feliu de Codines, 2000) died young, at the height of his career, when his work had achieved international renown. The author of overwhelming buildings, he combined a genuinely new language with a profound respect for place. He left us a sparkling architectural world and a prolifi c intellectual body of work: writings, drawings, sketches, photomontages, diaries and almost a thousand original models preserved in his studio. The Enric Miralles Foundation is responsible for the custody and management of the legacy of the architect Enric Miralles and the work that he created together with Benedetta Tagliabue. This archive, which includes more than 800 original models, will be catalogued and digitalized so that it is accessible to everybody. Furthermore, it will give the public insight into Enric’s unique intellectual and architectonic design process and be integrated into the Foundation’s activities. OVERVIEW The course integrates theory, practice and design and the disciplines of architecture and the city with the analytical discipline of research, while maintaining a timely relevance to the contemporary world’s challenges of inter-disciplinary knowledge, sustain- able urbanism, social inclusion and exclusion, architecture and computing, spatial cognition, the physical and immaterial dimen- sions of social networks, and a user-centred approach to design innovation. The program is structured in 9 subjects and special master-classes. Every subject is both theoretical (mornings) and practical (afternoons). We believe in “making while thinking” and generate open discussions. The students will develop their own proposal for La Grand Paris (www.societedugrandparis.fr/english). There will be a site-study trip to Paris at the beginning of the program and visits to the buildings by EMBT architects in Barcelona such as Santa Caterina Market and neighborhood renovation (http://tinyurl.com/oatxkya), Gas Natural Tower (http://tinyurl.com/ o55827b), Diagonal Mar Park (http://tinyurl.com/o55827b), Igualada’s cemetery (http://tinyurl.com/pa4ojok), Icaria Pergolas (www.mirallestagliabue.com/), Hostalets, Institut la Llauna. • Parque De Los Colores

  • 20 Years in Spain
20 YEARS IN SPAIN 1993-2013 Few of us would have imagined that 20 years after we opened a small office in Madrid we would be looking back on our contributions to some of the most innovative and influential projects that have been realized in Spain over that period. Probably none of us would have foreseen that five years after the onset of a lingering global financial crisis we would have a thriving multi- disciplinary Spanish practice, advising, planning, designing and supervising the delivery of projects all over the world. We are tremendously proud of the achievements of our colleagues in Spain over these 20 years and are confident that they will go on to achieve more great things in the next 20. Gregory Hodkinson Arup Group Board 20 YEARS IN SPAIN 1993 - 2013 At the service of life Arup has been able to successfully combine the small with the large, engineering with architecture and Scandinavian democracy with British empiricism. The firm, started in 1946 by the Danish engineer, Ove Arup, and founded in its present form in 1963 with the British architect, Philip Dowson, celebrates its first twenty years in Spain as mindful of its legacy as it is to its future. Those who have made many iconic works possible in recent decades are also responsible for minimal works in harsh and demanding social and technical environments, because as much talent is required to build a small bridge in a remote region of China as it is to erect a skyscraper in Europe. It is a saga of mythical engineers of the likes of the late-lamented Peter Rice – without

  • Scottish Parliament Building Edinburgh, Scotland
Scottish Parliament Building Client: Location: Edinburgh, Scotland Date: Typology: In 1998 EMBT won the bid to design the new Edinburgh Parliament building. The Architect: proposal generated great enthusiasm due to its organic capacity to combine existing Project directors: elements with new technologies through the contemporary and unique language of the Design team: Barcelona studio. The project’s development centered on reflecting the characteristics Gross floor area: of the country and its inhabitants via a new way of building that was directly linked to the land itself. This close tie to the site and its setting would, when the adjacent distillery is demolished, enable the generation of multiple perspective lines on the city. Intentionally, a contrast is sought, a conceptual distance, between the new construction and Holyrood Palace, the twelfth-century royal residence that has been renovated many times. Unlike the palace, which dominates the landscape, the new Scottish Parliament drops literally into the hillside terrain, the lowest part of Arthur’s Seat, and appears to sprout from the living stone. EURAU’12 ABSTRACT: This article attempts to show the influence of Enric Miralles’ project in Santa Rosa’s park (1992-2001), in Mollet del Vallés (North-West of Barcelona). How in the middle of an empty, degraded, and useless field, the contemporaneous architect assumes the responsibility of intervene to give live to this wasteland generating an ideal landscape, amending the breach previously existing in the surroundings. This project proves that there are still some models and practices that enlighten the future of public space in contemporary city. The park shows that the local authorities chose the right man for the job. Nowadays, the people of the districts of Santa Rosa, Plana Lledó and Can Borrell (a very old neighborhood, a working-class district of the 60’s and a new neighborhood) walk freely and enjoy collectively of the environment.
