Emphasizing in Text fy{} i T THEA guide to typographicMANUAL knowledge and solutions Emphasizing in Text Once you’ve got the “discretion” thing is in mind, there are a few basic tools you can use to create typographic emphasis. • Italics • Boldface • Size • Color • Typestyle Change Italics One of the simplest ways to create emphasis is to use an italic. Even though italics are generally intended for titles, foreign words, technical terms and the like, they can also be subtle emphasizers. Using the italic form of a typeface creates a distinct, yet harmo- nious departure in text copy. Use italics to emphasize words, phrases or short sentences in text copy. Because their designs are usually cursive (as opposed to simply obliqued or slanted), the italic coun- terpart of serifed typefaces stand out a little more in a block of copy than sans serif italics. One or two words in italic stand out without interrupting the reading process. A sentence set in italic beings to be more of a distraction than emphasis; and a para- graph becomes downright difficult to slog through. Illustration 1 Boldface Emphasizing using bold type is just about as easy as using italics – and you’ll be making a stronger statement. The weight you use to create emphasis, however, should be the result of a conscious decision and not just the click of a mouse. Using the next heavier weight in a family might not be the right choice. In some typeface families weight changes are subtle. The next weight up from the basic text design may be too light to make a strong statement. Using it will simply distract the reader, rather than highlight an important point. Illustration 2 Size “Make it bigger” may seem like a logical guideline for creating typographic emphasis, While this can be effective, but there are some potential drawbacks to just bumping up the point size. If you are emphasizing by increasing the point size of the important information, it’s best to separate the word, phrase, or sentence from the rest of the copy. Try centering it in the text column, like a pull-quote, or run it as it’s own copy block keeping the column width consistent with the text around it. If you are emphasizing a phrase or sentence, word spacing may also have to be adjusted to be optically consistent with the smaller copy. Illustration 3 Color Color is an excellent emphasizer. Color is irresistible – unless there's too much of it. It is color’s rarity that makes it noticeable and a powerful emphasizer. The less color you use, the more valuable it becomes. A couple of tips for emphasizing with color: Set colored type in bold, to compensate for color’s paleness relative to black. And don't waste color on headlines. Headlines already stand out by virtue of their size and boldness. Color only decorates them. Illustration 4 Typeface Change A change in typeface also creates emphasis. There is, however, a typographic “Golden Rule” of sorts for combining fonts from unrelated families: The greater the difference in type designs, the better the mix – and the more powerful the emphasis. The least risky combination is using a sans serif typeface for emphasis in copy set in a serif design. Using a sans serif design as an emphasizer in copy set with a different sans serif face almost never works. Visually, strong contrasts typically don’t create problems, but when typefaces from different families that look a lot alike are combined the result is visual discordance rather than emphasis. Illustration 5 The typeface used as an emphasizer should also be bolder and have about the same x-height as face used for the rest of the text copy. The Nevers of Emphasizing Most typographic rules leave a lot of room for “artistic” interpretation. There are a few associated with creating emphasis, however, that are right up there with not eating crackers in bed. • Never underline • Never emulate a “highlighter” by putting a yellow tint over the copy. • Never use bold italic. If you want to be subtle, use italic. If you want to make a strong statement, use bold. Bold italics suffer from dissociative identity disorder. • Never set all caps for emphasis. If you have to use caps in text copy, use small caps. All methods of typographic emphasis are seductive; some are downright fun. The best uses of them, however, are restrained rather than effusive. Created in 1990 by Tim Berners- Lee, the web quickly became the most used hypertext system in the world, and most browsers default to indicating hyperlinks with an underline. To answer the question of why the underline was chosen over competing demarcation techniques, the thesis applies the methods of history of technology and sociology of technology. The writing assignments you receive in 1L Legal Research and Writing or Legal Practice are primarily practice-based documents such as memoranda and briefs, so your experience using the Bluebook as a first year student has likely been limited to the practitioner style of legal writing. When writing scholarly papers and for your law journal, however, you will need to use the Bluebook’s typeface conventions for law review articles. Although answers to all your citation questions can be found in the Bluebook itself, there are some key, but subtle differences between practitioner writing and scholarly writing you should be careful not to overlook. Your first encounter with law review-style citations will probably be the journal Write-On competition at the end of your first year. This guide may help you in the transition from providing Bluebook citations in court documents to doing the same for law review articles, with a focus on the sources that you are likely to encounter in the Write-On competition. 1. Typeface (Rule 2) Most law reviews use the same typeface style, which includes Ordinary Times New Roman, Italics, and SMALL CAPITALS. In court documents, use Ordinary Roman, Italics, and Underlining. Scholarly Writing In scholarly writing footnotes, use Ordinary Roman type for case names in full citations, including in citation sentences contained in footnotes. This typeface is also used in the main text of a document. Use Italics for the short form of case citations. Use Italics for article titles, introductory signals, procedural phrases in case names, and explanatory signals in citations.

    The semantics-pragmatics of typographic emphasis in discourse Jefferson Maia & Robin Morris (University of South Carolina) [email protected] The standard view of the effects of typographic emphasis in English is that, as poor man’s correlates of prosodic stress, type styles (e.g., capitals, italics) enhance memory for emphasized information to the detriment of reading speed without affecting higher-order linguistic processes [1, 2, 3]. In contrast, a few referential studies offer evidence that typography interacts with linguistic variables [4] and, more specifically, that it adds a modulatory or a contrastive layer of meaning to the interpretation of referential expressions [5, 6]. Because, however, the bulk of these findings stems from memory studies, little is known about the effects of typographic emphasis as a focus mechanism in sentence processing. In addition, no study to date has investigated whether typographic emphasis can bring a referent into discourse focus and consequently affect the real-time processing of anaphoric expressions. This study provides on-line evidence for the visual-emphatic, contrastive, and discourse focus effects of typographic emphasis during normal silent reading in English by means of two eye-tracking experiments manipulating capitals or italics in cohesive pieces of discourse. The first eye-tracking experiment was conducted in a 2x2x2 within-subjects design with factors Antecedent (Subject, Object), Anaphor Form (Pronoun, Name), and Emphasis (Plain, Capitals). Experimental passages featured a referential target (e.g., “RON”) and a competitor (e.g., “Iris”) in the first sentence, while the second sentence included an anaphor (e.g., “he”), a verb (e.g., “voted”), and a wrap-up region (e.g., “for a Republican”), as in “RON scorned Iris due to differences in political view.
