Computer , tablet & cell phone instructors More and more of our members are getting computers, tablets, or smart phones - especially this time of year. We are looking for more volunteers to work one-on-one with people to help them with a specific issue or two on their specific devices. We are especially looking for those with Android phone and non-Apple computer skills. We match to the skills of our instructors. Contact Steph if you are interested. 3

December Volunteer: Mike Rutkowski When riders in our transportation program get into a vehicle with volunteer driver, Mike Rutkowski behind the wheel, they are in extra good hands. You see, Mike retired after 27 years as a first responder with the fire department in Westerville, OH, outside of Columbus. While we obviously hope he never has to use the skills he honed over those years in dealing with emergen- cies, it is our honor that he has chosen to spend his time volunteering as a driver with the Senior Center. He’s now been driving with the Center for a few years, coming here after hearing about what a rewarding experience it was to drive seniors from his neighbor, Rich Smoski, who also drives. When any of us talk about the Senior Center with others, we never know what the outcome of that conversation may be. Mike grew up in the Detroit area, living very near Lake St. Clair, and he says he knew how to drive boats before cars. He spent as much time as he could fishing, water skiing and just out on the lake. He served our country in the United States Air Force from 1966-1970 as a jet engine mechanic, stationed throughout Europe. He obtained a degree in engineering from the University of Cincinnati. His 27 years as a first responder in Westerville were very rewarding, and he moved up the ranks in management. He retired as acting fire chief. Mike met his wife, Vickie, when he was a paramedic, as she worked in the emergency room at the local hospital. They’ve now been married 38 years, with one child and two teenage grandsons who live in Philadelphia. The Rutkowski’s moved to Colorado in 1999 for Vickie’s work and were only going to stay three years, but they are still here. He believes they will probably move east at some point to be closer to their family members and lifelong friends. Mike and Vickie like to travel, often going to visit the grandkids, and they enjoy going to Europe. Mike still loves boating. He misses his sailboat on Lake Erie, but belongs to the Rocky Mountain Antique Classics, a boat club. He said he especially likes Grand Lake. He’s restored a classic Chris Craft boat. He used to restore old Honda motorcycles. He also worked for a number of years here for a custom home builder. While Mike is a man of many experiences and talents, what draws people to him is the warmth and caring spirit he projects to everyone who rides in his car, as well as to each of the staff and others at the Senior Center. He is a truly kind person and such a pleasure to be around. Keep him in mind every time you have the opportunity to have a conversation with someone you know who may just become the next Mike Rutkowski at our Center. Thanks, Mike, for all you do, and congratulations on being Volunteer of the Month Volunteer named our Volunteer of the Month.

As a parent, I have often heard the saying that "it takes a village". This is usually referring Colleen Morton, R.N. to efforts and influences of family, friends and neighbors to raise a child. However, we Wellness Coordinator know the efforts of others come into play throughout our lives. I believe we have a village Castle Rock Senior Center to be thankful for in the volunteer hours that professionals, companies and organizations have provided to make the following Wellness Programs successful in 2016. And I'm also thankful for our Senior Center staff and volunteers for setting up and coordinating (and chopping and scooping for Lunch and Learn) to make sure all the events go off without a hitch.
