  • The Empire Within: Montreal, the Sixties, and the Forging of a Radical Imagination
The Empire Within: Montreal, the Sixties, and the Forging of a Radical Imagination by Sean William Mills A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada November 2007 Copyright © Sean Mills 2007 Abstract This thesis explores the wide variety of ways in which radical intellectuals and activists in Montreal used and adapted Third World decolonization theory to build a broad movement of solidarity and anti-colonial resistance from 1963-1972. Beginning in the early 1960s, activists and intellectuals in Montreal began drawing upon the language of Third World decolonization to resituate their understandings of themselves, their society, and the world in which they inhabited. Through their engagement with Third World liberation theory – and the closely related language of Black Power – radical intellectuals in Montreal sought to give new meaning to the old conception of humanism, and they worked to drastically expand the geographical frame of reference in which Quebec politics were generally understood. After analyzing the shifting meaning of decolonization in the period leading up to the late 1960s, this thesis explores the ways in which various groups adopted, built upon, challenged, and shaped the conception of Quebec liberation. Montreal’s advocates of women’s liberation, the city’s Black activists, defenders of unilingualism, and labour radicals were all deeply shaped by the intellectual and urban climate of Montreal, and by ideas of Quebec decolonization. They developed their own individual narratives of liberation, yet linked by the flexible language of decolonization, these narratives all greatly overlapped, forming a vast movement which was larger than the sum of its parts.

  • Comparing the Success of Developing Professional Hockey Players from the CHL Drafts
Comparing the Success of Developing Professional Hockey Players from the CHL Drafts ADAM WEST & TJ MILLAR Bachelor’s Thesis Sports and Leisure Manage- ment, Vierumäki Campus 2019 Abstract April 23rd, 2019 Authors Adam West & TJ Millar Degree Program Sports and Leisure Management, Vierumäki Campus Thesis Title Number of pages and appendix pages Comparing the Success of Developing Professional Hockey Players from the CHL Drafts 34 + 55 The purpose of this study is to outline the differentiation of success of drafting and develop- ing Professional Hockey Players amongst the three Major Junior Leagues (WHL, OHL, QMJHL) in the CHL. It analyzes three development leagues that help contribute to the Major Junior Rosters; The Alberta Midget Hockey League (AMHL), The Greater Toronto Minor Midget Hockey League (GTMMHL), and The Quebec Midget AAA Hockey league (QMAAA). The three Major Junior leagues select players for their teams via a drafting process. When players hit a certain age, they become eligible to be drafted, and teams select the players they believe are the best available to come play for their team. The OHL and the QMJHL draft their players after their 15-year-old season and are eligible to play for their respective clubs in their upcoming 16-year-old season. The Western Hockey league drafts players after their 14-year-old season but players cannot play for their teams until their 16-year-old season as well. Data was collected from the development leagues (AMHL, GTMMHL, QMAAA) over a 5- year period analyzing players selected in the 3 Major Junior drafts and determining if they: played in the CHL, were drafted to the NHL, played Professional Hockey, and if they played until the age of 20.

  • Defining the Liminal Athlete: an Exploration of the Multi-Dimensional Liminal Condition in Professional Sport
Defining the Liminal Athlete: An Exploration of the Multi-Dimensional Liminal Condition in Professional Sport THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Frances Santagate Sutton, B.A. Graduate Program in Anthropology The Ohio State University 2017 Master's Examination Committee: Jeffrey H. Cohen, Advisor Douglas E. Crews Debbie Guatelli-Steinberg Copyrighted by Frances Santagate Sutton 2017 Abstract In the United States, professional athletes exist on a spectrum between “amateurs” and “professionals” determined by social and economic factors. Professional athletes who do not identify with the extremes of this spectrum are situated in liminal space. In an ethnographic study of professional Ultimate Frisbee in the United States, I build on the existing models of liminality from Turner (1969) and Thomassen (2014) and demonstrate that there are social, economic, and physiological dimensions of liminality for professional athletes. This pilot study included three months of ethnographic fieldwork (May-July 2016), during which time I observed and interviewed members of two men’s professional Ultimate Frisbee teams, the Cincinnati Revolution (American Ultimate Disc League) and the Boston Whitecaps (Major League Ultimate). Participant observation and interviews provided insight into the life of the “liminal athlete.” Five common themes emerged from qualitative data: “Priorities Beyond Professional Sport,” “Responsibilities of a Professional Sport,” “Athletic Eating,” “Budgeting and Planning,” and “Different Definitions of Professional Athlete.” Each theme describes a quality of the liminal athlete. These qualities define the liminal athlete and where they fit in the world of sport. For professional Ultimate Frisbee players, liminal status is indefinite and affects social, economic, and physiological aspects of their lives.
