Inspired by the 2021 NAIDOC theme, Heal Country!, the slate focuses on the strength and survival of the oldest continuing cultures on the planet, from Saturday 3 July to Sunday 11 July. SBS RESPONSE TO AUSTRALIAN COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA AUTHORITY ‘SPECTRUM SHARING – OVERVIEW AND NEW APPROACHES’ INFORMATION PAPER SEPTEMBER 2019 Introduction The Special Broadcasting Service Corporation (SBS) appreciates the opportunity to comment on the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) Spectrum sharing – overview and new approaches Information Paper (the Information Paper). SBS is unique in the Australian media environment, providing multilingual, multicultural and Indigenous radio, television and digital media services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia's multicultural society. SBS reaches almost 100 per cent of the population through its six free-to-air TV channels (SBS SD, SBS HD, SBS VICELAND HD, SBS World Movies, SBS Food and National Indigenous Television (NITV)) and seven radio stations (SBS Radio 1, 2 and 3, SBS Arabic24, SBS PopDesi, SBS Chill and SBS PopAsia). Servicing 68 languages including SBS Arabic24, SBS Radio is dedicated to the nearly five million Australians who speak a language other than English at home, while the three music channels (SBS PopAsia, SBS PopDesi and SBS Chill) engage all Australians through music and pop culture from around the world. SBS’s reach is being significantly extended through SBS’s digital services, including SBS On Demand, the SBS Radio App and portals which make online audio programming and information available to audiences at a time and place of their choosing. Television White Space (TVWS) The broadcasting services band (BSB) spectrum is critical to SBS in the delivery of content to the major part of its audience base (i.e. free to air (FTA)). While there is merit in exploring opportunities for spectrum sharing to enable new applications, this should not come at the expense of the integrity of SBS services. -

This was a Google Forms survey. The first Google Forms survey (n = 1176) was Survey 2017 about SBS. The earlier (non Google Forms) surveys were conducted in 2013: A study of 2044 viewers of SBS television on advertising, Charter, relevance and other matters (n = 2044); and 2008: One Minute Survey (n = 1733). In mid May 2018, 1249 people took part in this online Google Forms Programs on SBS survey 2018 . The survey was open nation-wide to anyone with internet access. Across all four surveys, four different cohorts totalling 6202 SBS viewers nationally have been surveyed in every State and Territory. The data collated here is conveyed in easy to read colour coded graphs. The survey asked questions in five categories: Program content; Program titles; SBS platforms; Competition; and Advertising. SaveOurSBS.org supporters & friends of SBS page 2 of 82 Key points Of the 1249 people who participated in the survey– Most thought SBS to be a valuable public service (range per SBS outlet/platform: 58% to 88%). Almost three-quarters (70%) said SBS currently has insufficient niche programming and 69% said the programs on SBS are now of the type expected on commercial broadcasters rather than a public broadcaster compared to more than 10 years ago. -

VICE Media Group Renews Partnership with SBS Australia
VICE Media Group renews partnership with SBS Australia London/Sydney. Tuesday 15th December 2020. VICE Media Group has announced the continuation of its partnership with Australian broadcaster, SBS, with a renewed content deal for its SBS Viceland TV channel, and SBS digital platforms. The agreement includes more than 1,000 hours of VICE Media Group content available to Australians through SBS, with exclusive access to more than 600 hours of new, original programming, including VICE TV documentary features and series, as well as content from the new VICE World News strand and original productions from VICE Studios. Announcing the deal, Kate Ward, President of VICE Studios, said: “We are thrilled to be continuing our landmark partnership with SBS in Australia. In SBS we have a partner who shares our deep commitment to storytelling through premium programming that resonates with this powerful generation of young people.” Adding: “This multi-year commitment is testament to the strength and depth of VICE’s creative programming across factual, lifestyle, documentary, investigative journalism and current affairs which, alongside the world-renowned VICE brand, attracts and retains youth audiences in Australia.” The deal extends an already successful partnership between VICE and SBS which began in 2016 with the launch of SBS Viceland, a free-to-air television channel bringing Australians a unique and curated mix of VICE programming alongside other SBS content.
