Ciências Naturais, Belém, v. 3, n. 3, p. 203-216, set.- dez. 2008 The skull and abdominal skeleton of Stenocercus dumerilii (Steindachner, 1867) (Reptilia: Squamata: Iguania) Crânio e esqueleto abdominal de Stenocercus dumerilii (Steindachner, 1867) (Reptilia: Squamata: Iguania) Emil José Hernández-RuzI Teresa Cristina Sauer Avila-PiresII Abstract: The objective of this study is to describe the skull and abdominal skeleton of the lizard Stenocercus dumerilii (Steindachner, 1867), with emphasis on those characters used in phylogenetic studies involving the genus Stenocercus. The peculiar shape of the head (pyramidal, with a distinct canthal-superciliary ridge that ends in a prominent postsupraciliary scale) results in part from the shape of the prefrontal and postfrontal bones, both of which bear protuberances projecting towards the orbital cavity. The postfrontal bone represents the highest point of the cranium. Contrary to what has been observed in other species of Stenocercus and in most Tropiduridae, the studied specimens of S. dumerilii presented a single pair of xiphisternal inscriptional ribs (followed by a pair of posterior xiphisternal processes). Besides, they presented five pairs of postxiphisternal inscriptional ribs widely separated ventrally. One specimen (of two studied) showed the pineal foramen completely enclosed by the frontal instead of in frontoparietal suture. Keywords: Iguania. Cranial osteology. Abdominal skeleton. Resumo: O presente estudo tem por objetivo descrever o crânio e o esqueleto abdominal do lagarto Stenocercus dumerilii (Steindachner, 1867), com ênfase nos caracteres utilizados em estudos filogenéticos incluindo o gênero Stenocercus. A forma peculiar da cabeça (piramidal, com uma crista supraciliar bem demarcada e terminando em uma escama pós- supraciliar proeminente) resulta em parte do formato dos ossos pré-frontal e pós-frontal, ambos com protuberâncias que se projetam em direção à cavidade orbital. -

In 1958 it was observed to predate heavily on beneficial insect species brought in to control introduced scale insects, subsequently resulting in the introduction of the great kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus), now a serious threat in itself. More recently N. grahami has been observed to predate on, and compete with juveniles of the 'Critically Endangered (CR)' Bermudian rock lizard (Eumeces longirostris). view this species on IUCN Red List Species Description Norops grahami has a mean snout to vent length of 68.9 mm for males (Losos, 1996). Notes Subspecies Norops grahami grahami is reported from western Jamaica and Cabarita Island off Port Maria; and N. g. aquarum from Portland and St. Thomas parishes, Jamaica (Reptiles Database, 2010). N. grahami is the most widespread and common of three introduced anole lizards present on Bermuda; the others are the Barbuda Bank tree anole (see Anolis leachii) and the Barbados anole (Anolis extremus) (Wingate, 1965). The effects of these lizards, particularly N. grahami led to the introduction of the great kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus) as a biocontrol agent in 1957. However, this biocontrol attempt was a failure; P. sulphuratus has been implicated in the population declines of native insect, bird and reptile species on Bermuda (Cheesman & Clubbe, 2007; Davenport et al., 2008). -

ABSTRACT We presenta list of 365 reptilian species reported for Perú until April 1995. We cite the scientific names and their authors. In addition, we record their distribution by ecological regions and political departments, according to inforrna tion found in the pertinent literature and in the herpetological collections of the Museo de Historia Natural, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Perú. INTRODUCCION Hasta el presente, son escasos los trabajos que presentan una visión panorámica de los reptiles del Perú. Un primer esfuerzo fue la publicación de Carrillo (1970) donde se hace una referencia general a la fauna peruana de reptiles. En un trabajo posterior sobre nombres populares, Carrillo ( 1990) enumeró 158 especies. McNeely et al. (1990) indicaron que se conocía 297 especies del Perú, sin ofrecer una lista de ellas, y Henle & Ehrl ( 1991) presentaron una lista parcial de especies peruanas, con 104 registros. Otros autores importantes, que se han referido a la Herpetofauna peruana en sus publicacio nes, son Peters & Orejas-Miranda (1970), Peters & Donoso-Barros (1970) y Vanzolini (1986) para los Squamata; Medem (1983) para los Crocodylia; y Pritchard & Trebbau (1984) y Márquez (1990) para los Testudines. -

E-mail: [email protected] N Abstract: The present study reports the easternmost known record for the tropidurid lizard Stenocercus sinesaccus Torres–Carvajal, 2005, at Floresta Nacional de Silvânia, state of Goiás, Brazil, in a transition area between cerrado sensu strictu and gallery forest The genus Stenocercus has a wide distribution in South America, with approximately 61 species occupying areas with elevations from 0 to 4000 m (Torres–Carvajal et al. 2007). In Brazil, nine species are found (Nogueira and Rodrigues 2006; Bérnils 2008): S. azureus (Müller, 1882); S. caducus (Cope, 1862); S. dumerilii (Steindachner, 1867), S. fimbriatus Ávila-Pires, 1995; S. quinarius Nogueira and Rodrigues, 2006; S. roseiventris Duméril and Bibron, 1837; S. sinesaccus Torres–Carvajal, 2005; S. squarrosus Nogueira and Rodrigues, 2006; S. tricristatus (Duméril, 1851). -

Status and Conservation of the Reptiles and Amphibians of the Bermuda Islands
Status and conservation of the reptiles and amphibians of the Bermuda islands Jamie P. Bacon1,2, Jennifer A. Bermuda’s herpetofauna includes three species of amphibians, one fossil tortoise, two species of freshwater turtles, five species of marine turtles, and four species of lizards. The amphibians Eleutherodactylus johnstonei, E. gossei and Bufo marinus were all introduced in the late 1880s. Amphibian population declines, including the possible extirpation of E. gossei, prompted the initiation in 1995 of an on-going investigation. Research into the high deformity rates in B. marinus has indicated that survival and development of larvae are affected by contaminants in a number of ponds and by the transgenerational transfer of accumulated contaminants. Of the two emydid turtles in Bermuda, Malaclemys terrapin may be native and its population characteristics are being studied; Trachemys scripta elegans is considered invasive and efforts are underway to remove its populations from the wild. The sizeable resident Chelonia mydas population has been the focus of a mark- recapture study since 1968. Results indicate that Bermuda is currently an important developmental habitat for green turtles originating from at least four different nesting beaches in the Caribbean. Immature Eretmochelys imbricata also reside on the Bermuda Platform and genetics studies suggest that multiple Caribbean genotypes are represented in Bermuda’s hawksbill population. Caretta caretta do not appear to be regular inhabitants, but two known loggerhead nesting events have recently occurred (in 1990 and 2005) and post-hatchling loggerheads regularly strand after winter storms. -
